Art & A Movie @ The Plaza

Tonight they showed PURPLE RAIN, and there was an '80s-themed art show. It was great. The crowd ate it up, and it made my first viewing of the film a wonderful one.

The reason I'm posting, though, are the next three films they're showing.

Sept. 1 - FIGHT CLUB (stencil-only art show)
October - BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA (KURT RUSSELL-themed art show!)
November - THEY LIVE! (Conspiracy-themed art show)

So, yeah, I hope to see a bunch of you there for the last two, at least. I'm pretty excited to see them both on the big screen.

Goddammit. Quickly approaching the time of the year where I hate not being near Atlanta.

This is too tidy to be a real event, and I'm now worried that there are outstanding warrants for my arrest. I wasn't aware of any fugitive status, but this is pure bait. I guess I'll go anyways. Moth to the flame and all.

FIGHT CLUB's coming up Tuesday night. I won't be there for that one, but I'm sure they'll get a good turnout.

Ho. Lee. Shit.

Someone please go with one of those lame spy camera-hat things and take lots of pics for me. That sounds like such an awesome night.

It's playing a couple of nights. I forget the other dates but it's probably that weekend or something.

Yeah, last chance for FIGHT CLUB is tonight at 9:30.

Tuesday night is NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968). I think I'll show up for that one, fo' sho'.

Not a part of this series, but tonight's show should be a good one:

Leave it to the twisted noggin of voice actor and animator, C. Martin Croker, to roll out an exhaustive collection of oddball animation dating back to the 1930s.

Croker, known by many as the voice of Zorak and Moltar on “Space Ghost: Coast-to-Coast,” opens the vaults of his personal 16 mm film collection to share a mother lode of wild, weird, rare and wacky animated goodies. The series, dubbed “Bizarro Saturday Morning,” debuts at Atlanta’s historic Plaza Theatre on September 15.

Take this rare opportunity to experience mind-blowing animation and familiar characters from legendary animators like Bob Clampett, Chuck Jones, Ralph Bakshi, Max Fleischer, Ward Kimball, Walt Kelly and many others. Whether it’s Bakshi’s swirling psychedelia, a dose of otherworldly Japanamation or a famous spinach chomping sailor spouting French, audiences will likely be rubbing their eyes in between the laughs. An animation historian in his own right, Croker will be hosting the festivities, shedding light into the backstories of some of these rarely-seen, awe-inspiring gems.

Each show in the series runs one night only. Croker plans on packing the kickoff edition with an extra helping of weird. The second show will feature Halloween and monster-related toons. The third installment finds zany holiday animation sprinkled with various other oddities.

Show begin at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $10.

Bump for tomorrow night. Behold:

I'm probably going to the Friday show. That poster would be perfect if it had (a) Al Leong and (b) a guy with Kurt Russell's face.

Okay, I'll go Friday with ya, Kurtwood. I can't make Tuesday, either. Most of the artwork should still be hanging on Friday.

This is an art show, so do I need my frock coat and cane?
Hmm...I'll be down at Savage Pizza meeting a friend late this afternoon, which is right near the Plaza...do I wait it out and see some Jack Burton art, or fight traffic and go home to Alpharetta...decisions, decisions.

Not an art show, but tonight C. Martin Croker (aka ZORAK!) is putting on another one of his nights of cartoon rarities. Halloween themed this time. These are very cool shows. I've been to the previous two, and enjoyed them very much. Check it out if you like obscure animation and old commercials.

See you there?

Wow, They Live would be a great film to break the trend of flaking on Plaza shows. I have a project due at midnight though, so I may be getting ahead of myself.

After reading Devin's Best Worst Movie review, I hope the Plaza does some sort of Troll 2 night.

They did a midnight TROLL 2 screening with some of the cast in attendance at the Landmark a year+ ago. I didn't make it to that one, though.

Bump for BACK TO THE FUTURE this week. Three shows. The art show version is Saturday night. I'll probably catch that one.

They plan to have a DeLorean out front under the marquee for picture-takin'.

This month's Art & A Movie is BRAZIL. It's this Tuesday night at 9:30, and the art show is by my friend Matt Manning. He usually does pretty interesting work.

Come check it out, won't you?

This is the last one I have to miss, ever.

I was planning on leaving to go back to Florida for a few weeks on Tuesday morning. This changes things though- might have to wait until Wednesday to leave.

I've never actually seen Brazil, so it would be doubly awesome to see it for the first time on the big screen...
Brazil is one of my favorite movies but it's also one that I can only watch every once in a while. Since we just watched this and a ton of extras on the Criterion disc last month, I'm not sure that I'm ready for it again. I will probably stop by to check out the art though.
I'm planning on going tonight. I love the film and have never seen it on the big screen.

Whoops, I didn't see this response until after the film. Sorry about that. I ended up going with my younger sister. It was odd watching the movie with an audience that was at least 50% comprised of folks who weren't born when the film originally came out in 85.
