The whip-crack drone that happens every time we switch from regular film to Predator-vision.

If you're talking about that loud foghorn sound, I'm right there with you. The first time that thing went off in the theater, it was downright unsettling.
That's exactly what I'm talking about. I think there is something about pitch it's played at that gives it the overall creepy vibe.
Don't know if it woud class as my FAVOURITE noise, as it still puts the fear of god thru me for some reason, but the wailing-cat noises in Gremlins very effectively spooked the hell out of me when I was a kid.

Also, the noise from the Combine soldiers suit life support when you kill them. Nice flatline!

Close Encounters;

Well it's more of a tune, but of course I love the trumpet sound that breaks the windows (THUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMP).

I adore the sound of the mechanical arm that lift's Han Solo out of the pit in Empire once he's been frozen in carbonite. I'm pretty sure a few modified versions of the sound are used a few other times in the original trilogy. Burtt is a genius.

But my all-time favourite is from Raging Bull. "Fat Jake" is being interviewed by the pool and a photographer is taking shots of him and his family. After the flash goes off, the photographer ejects the bulb and it makes a wonderful clinking noise as it hits the ground.

Favorite sound effect?

The Wilhelm Scream, of course!

A favorite of mine from the prequels -- Sebulba's pod racer. It's got this really heavy whud-whud-whud-whud sound that really makes it sound like there's some heavy work going on inside those engines. Really, that whole pod race is a marvel of sound design.
I love every sound effect associated with the Millennium Falcon.
- The whine of the engine when it's in flight is unlike any other spaceship that I've seen before. Supposedly, the base of that sound came from a malfunctioning air conditioner.
- The start up sound in TESB when they're on Hoth (would it help if I got out and pushed?)
- The many instances of the malfunctioning lightspeed sound in TESB are hilarious.

What a great ship.

The sound as the hyperdrive kicks in is pretty awesome too.

Lynch's Dune:
The processed "Chaaaaaaaaaa-CHUH!" when the weirding modules are used.
The Sandworms' hiss
The industrial background sounds on the Harkonen homeworld
The hum of the shields
The pure, deep bass tone of the thumper
The clockwork mechanism and buzz of the hunter-seeker
The voice. "Now. You. COOOMMME. HEEEERE."

Also, almost every other Lynch film is just loaded with deeply unsettling background sounds that are usually weird industrial sounds and/or processed human screeching.

Two of my favorites--Jango Jett's seismic charges and the Proton Packs--have already been mentioned. I'll add the sound the Deadites make as they fly around the cabin: wwwwhhhHHHHHHHAAAAAAAHHHHHH! I'm also a big fan of any of the sound effects associated with Doc Brown's Delorean, from the sound of the time circuits being switched on to the sparking, crackling noises it makes when it transports through time.

As for Princess Kate, I have the distinct sensation that she's a female version of duke fleed. We should all probably work to make sure they never meet. It would probably end up a whole "Gatekeeper" - "Keymaster" kind of deal.
The "deeedle-lee deedle-lee" of the oscillation overthruster in Buckaroo Banzai. I am instantly 12 years old any time I hear that sound.
Somebody mentioned the switch to Predator-Vision in Predator, but I always liked the trilling noise the predators did. I used to be able to mimick that noise when I was a kid. Would freak my friends out.
How about those horrible whining snap photography shots from the opening of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre? That always instantly puts me on edge.

Damn it, Kid, I was coming in here to mention that.

Strangely, I have very little in the way of favourite sound effects. I find it wayyyyyyy too easy to be distracted by single sounds (Wilhelm's put in the wrong place bug the hell out of me but I love the effect itself) that don't work so I need to listen to the scenes as a whole.

That said, I love the Battle of Bastogne in Band of Brothers. There's not a single misstep in that whole sequence. From BGs to FX to foley it's a brilliant piece of work. It has huge frequency range plus it has moments that allow the ears to rest. Most movies just give you sound after sound after sound with no break so your ears start to lose their ability to hear variation.

I also love No Country as a whole. Just a fucking brilliant soundscape. The moment you hear Chigurh's gun you know he's a badass. They wouldn't even have to show him and you'd know it. Plus it's almost all diegetic sound.

My favorite in that one is the tiny, squeaking noise of Chigurh unscrewing the lightbulb in the hotel corridor. That's when you knew that Brolin was outmatched.

"i was just coming in to say how refreshing it is that no one has dropped the wilhelm bomb...
"

i thought about the wilhelm scream the first time i saw this thread... but then realized i do not enjoy that scream as it takes me out of whatever i'm watching... "oh, the wilhelm scream.. again". i couldnt rightly call it a favorite

In Barry Lyndon, during the shootout between Barry Lyndon and his stepson, his stepson vomits. It's the most realistic sounding vomit noise I've ever heard. It actually made me sick. Kubrick even adds the splashing noise in the dirt and straw.
Even Ben Burtt wants a moratorium on the Wilhelm. Listen to the man!
The Wave Motion Gun from Space Battleship Yamoto/Star Blazers.

The drawn out ringing sound that swords make when they get drawn in Ching Siu-Tung's DUEL TO THE DEATH.

Most of my other favorites were mentioned already. The sound of Jango Fett's seismic charges were the best thing about that film. A sound so awesome not even the vacuum of space could silence it.

It's a classic, but IMO, nobody screams like Indy/Han during a torture session. Tom (from Tom & Jerry) a close second. Turk from SCRUBS, a distant 3rd.

There's also the Goofy scream to consider.
I know they're "only" cartoons, but The Incredibles and WALL*E both have an embarrassment of sound design goodies. All of Syndrome's little gadgets just sound really cool (I particularly like his tiny scanning probes and the huge bladed hovercraft thingies that chase Violet & Dash).

And WALL*E's and EVE's entire characters are made on their sound design as much as their animation. And that's just scratching the surface of all the roboty sounds in that film.
The sound that Bluto makes after falling off the window on the ladder. It was also used on Anthony Michael Hall when he sees the drunk girl's panties in Sixteen Candles
post #77 of 118
The totally unrealisit noise the swords make in Highlander.
2 of mine from the Star Wars OT

Lando's buddy laugh while commanding the Millennium Falcon
The droid in the beginning of Empire that Han shoots on Hoth. I make those noises regularly.
The sound this little guy makes...classic!

The sound when the darkness comes in Silent Hill.

The sound of the Ark burning the Nazi stamp off its crate in Raiders. Totally unlike anything else in the film.
The dying shriek the aliens make in Aliens.

The sound of Robocop's leg holster compartment closing.

The sound the image enhancer makes in Blade Runner.

Freddy's claws against metal.

The sound the hot wire makes as it touches the blood in The Thing.

The triple-crack/whine leading to the sound of the burning tire tracks of the Delorean travelling through time.

The thunk/whine of the power loader's feet in the final confrontation in Aliens.
I LOVED Star Wars as a kid. Now I don't ever feel a need to revisit it.

However, reading this thread I realized not just how iconic not just the characters have become, but so many of the sound effects. It seems like that kind of attention to detail in more recent movie making is a little lacking (with a few exception of course).

To add to the BtTF love, the license plate spinning.

I forgot that one!

I've always been a fan of ROBOCOP's walk. ZZZZClunk! ZZZZClunk!

Maximillian, from 'The Black Hole', had fantastic sound design. His flying sound, in particular, was a really menacing drone.

God Yes!

Actually, all of BttF had great sound work. The cuckoo clocks, the rube goldberg machine, the AMP, the skateboarding sounds, the subtle crackle sound the flux capacitor makes, the boop-beep-boop of the time circuits activating, the bell tower, etc etc. All semi-iconic to me.

Here's a favorite sound of mine that has been re-used often:

Charlie Brown falling down.

When the Chinese railroad worker in Blazing Saddles passes out, they use that sound. It's been used many times, but usually in older shows. My brother and I even used it in a movie we made 20 years ago.

A terrible use of a sound effect:

In The Untouchables, when the team shows up after Nitty taunted Ness "Nice house I said nice house." The team rushes to the scene, and the tires screech in the middle of the road as the car slams on the brakes. The first sound is fine, and then as the car stops, they throw in the typical "screeching-halt tire noise" that has been used for years. Took me right out of the scene.

The way warp drive engines sound in the new Star Trek. Less is more.
I LOVE the sounds that accompany Ripley setting the 'self-destruct' in the Nostromo, especially the 'ssssssssssssssss-thwunk' as she pulls out the 4 cores.

Don't know why, just do.

I read somewhere that some of those sound effects came from the lights Scott was using to light the set for that sequence.
The music/sound effect cue when the camera zooms into code in the Matrix trilogy stands up to me.

The sound of the T Rex's footsteps in Jurassic Park.

The light-cycles in Tron.

And, it's already been said several times, but the sound of Indy's haymakers always blew me away.

WINNER!

This is what I came in here to suggest.
-The mini-gun sound in T2
-The Harrier's chain-gun sound in True Lies
-Any sound made by Chewie
-Sound of a bat hitting a human (as heard multiple times in Casino)
-That crazy sound made by a bunch of violins you usually hear when hordes of insects attack

Other than those I certainly echo the previously mentioned Tie Fighter, Indy gun/punch, Alien selfdestruct tubes.
The blast after Sauron bites the dust in Fellowship of the Ring.

Love to hear it on a proper subwoofer.
Never mind
rewatched the trex attack (and all of JP ) last night, both with the michael j nelson "riff trax" on and then again without them. does anyone care to tell me i am not totally and completely right when i say that the robot T Rex looks better adn scarier than almost any cgi ever? its so utterly real, and with MINOR cgi assists a 2009 version could be totally perfect. the sound obviously needs to be changed not one decible
post #98 of 118
the WHUMP sound they've used for spells in the last few Harry Potter movies. All bass. And in the theater, or with a good subwoofer, you can feel it hit in your chest, it's fantastic
post #99 of 118
In addition to the WHUMP sound for the spells in the Harry Potter movies, I always take notice of and end up loving that strange waterdrop-like woop sound that Dumbledore's wand makes as he duels with Voldemort. It's when he uses his water ball spell. It's such a 'good' sound effect vs. Voldemort's more aggressively evil sound effects.
