Ooo! Primer's SPFX are definitely doable. It has an intelligent script, some nice suspense, and all the actors are amature. Definitely a good small movie to watch.

When I said Slacker on page one, the joke was that it has a cast of dozens, but few "actors" in it. I made a funny.

I just skimmed the thread so maybe I missed it but has Before Sunrise and Before Sunset been mentioned yet? Only two speaking roles in both of those if I recall...

Came across the term "Bottle Episode" during a season 2 ep of COMMUNITY. Never heard it used before, but it definitely applies to this old thread:

Excellent choice, but there were a few fun little speaking roles in "Before Sunrise". The two main characters run into these two funny guys inviting them to a play featuring a cow (one of them proudly declares, "I'm the cow!"), a poet who makes a poem based on a word he asks them for ("milkshake"), and a palmist/fortune teller. Lovely little bit parts to give the movie some local colour. The poet also gives Hawke's character a chance to come across as a bit of a cynical douchebag. I know some people don't like that, but I think it makes the movie better. It makes his character more real. The two of them aren't just wonderfully intelligent and eloquent young romantics. They've got imperfections too.

In that vein, I submit Vanya on 42nd Street.  A really KILLER cast does "Uncle Vanya" on an empty stage in an empty theatre.  After two minutes, your mind puts in all the other details you need.  LOVE this flick.

The Corman/Price Poe adaptation double feature of HOUSE OF USHER and PIT & THE PENDULUM. Small casts, big Gothic castles. See others in the genre for more examples. Horror tales often exploit isolation for maximum effectiveness.

127 Hours has some other characters, most notably the girls in the beginning and the ex and parents in flashbacks, but for the vast majority of the running time it's a one man show. And it's great.

Bug is the film thing that came to mind. I seem to hazily remember some people at the beginning of the movie but for all intents and purposes it's completely Shannon and Judd.

Speaking of zombie movies, Pontypool only has a handful of people. Brilliant movie as well.
