Looks like this Russian epic is finally released over here. Anyone catch this yet? "Conan the Barbarian meets Lord of the Rings".

Trailer.

Saw the trailer on YouTube. Looks pretty cool.

I'll give it a go.

You weren't kidding about "Conan the Barbarian meets Lord of the Rings." It's literally those two films meeting each other on the Steppes.

Looks pretty bad, but I'm still curious.

I can't take credit. Says that right on the DVD. I guess they know their target demographic. I's supposed to be a pretty big budget, as far as Russian films go. Will it be better than Sci-Fi regulars EARTHSEA or RING OF THE NIBELUNGS? Here's hoping.

I remember the Twitchfilm review. The action apparently suck. Isn't the core of such a thing?

Here it is.

I remember seeing the trailer for this one and thought it looked OK. Seems like a decent rental but I've got a huge backlog of titles to catch up on right now.

I enjoyed the hell out of this one. I did a write-up (not really a review) for it here.

Basically, I feel that while there wasn't a whole lot of new territory here, I was impressed enough by the film's earnest sense of its own identity that I ended up liking it quite a bit. But yeah, I'd recommend it.

Is that a flying humanoid I see in the background? If so, count me in.

I agree that would be most excellent, but it's actually Volkodav's pet bat.

Just watched this last night. Reminded more of Willow than LOTR to be honest but I could definitely see the similarities to Conan. Kind of generic for the most part but I kind of dug it. I found some of the acting and editing awkward though and I thought the bat was cute.

Yeah, it was definitely interesting. I didn't find it as awkward as I found it different. It was so culturally different I was left in awe.

That's how I felt watching some the old 50s/60s classic Russian fairy tale films. Bizarre stuff. Baba Yaga, etc.
Perhaps I'll go check some of that stuff out.

Rented this over the weekend. The quote on the cover should be "Utah Wolf Productions meets Lord of the Rings". Unfortunately there is no award for Worst Digital Bat, so I'm afraid Wolfhound will be left in the cold come Oscar season.

Avoid.

These directors are a good place to start for Russian medieval epics (bylina), Slavic mythology, and fairy tales/folklore. Not all of their films are on DVD, but quite a few have been at one point or another:
Aleksandr Rou
Aleksandr Ptushko

They're definitely a product of their time, but I find them charming as hell. And a whole knew culture I knew very little about.

Saw this last night, liked it a lot.

The Russian people have been slaves to one sort of oppressive leadership or another for hundreds of years. This film is a lovely rebellious response to that mindset.

Also nice to see the High Tatras used so effectively, you can stick your Land of the Long White Cloud up your arse!
