I want a sequel as well. YO JOE!

A sequel to this G.I.Joe? shit yes!

If JGL returns, let him use his "Doctor" voice which was perfect for CC instead of the one he used (or was modified to sound like that) at the end of the movie.

Hear, hear! Yeah had a fun time with this last night, count me in for a sequel.

As long as they find a way to bring Vosloo back somehow, i'm game.

I want sequels. Many sequels.

Damn all you people (and myself) for making this a hit and bringing on sequels.

Okay, I kid, but I really didn't like the movie. It was straight-to-DVD quality material on a larger budget. And that Tatum guy (smacks forehead); I could swear that Sommers' direction to him in every scene was: "Okay, think of a California Redwood, better yet, think of sheet rock, aaaand.....roll camera."

Given its budget, is G.I. Joe really any more successful than Watchmen? Yeah, it's exceeded the expectations of a few weeks back where disaster was suggested, but it's still highly unlikely to make back it's budget domestically. Could fall well short of it if it tumbles 60% this weekend.

While I wouldn't call the movie objectively better than "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" or "Transformers", I definitely thought it was more fun than either of them, and I felt it showed more potential for a much better sequel. At the end of those other two, I felt like I'd seen enough of each franchise to last me a lifetime and I knew for sure I had no desire to revisit its characters ever again.

"G.I. Joe", however, had characters that I'd very much like to see fleshed out further in future sequels. Particularly Cobra Commander, because I loved his cartoonish villain voice as the doctor, and because he only really became Cobra Commander right at the end. I said elsewhere that I thought "Star Trek" has great characters unfortunately stuck in a stupid plot, but with "G.I. Joe" I liked the plot more than the characters (mostly because I appreciated how simple it was with little more than 'good guys vs. bad guys' to it) and was disappointed by how shallow and one-dimensional the characters were.

Nonetheless, I can imagine some of the characters becoming a lot more interesting in a sequel. I think Destro and Cobra Commander could only get better (although Cobra Commander needs a mask change badly). Duke seems to be a bit of a lost cause, though. As long as Tatum is playing him, I'm not optimistic that he can grow beyond his current status as just about the most bland 'hero' of a protagonist a summer blockbuster action movie ever had. Scarlett was awful too, but at least she's not supposedly the main character.

Someone mentioned in the Post thread that they expect a Transformers 2 scenario with this. Same movie, just longer and with... well, "more" in every front. Then backlash ensues, despite being pretty similar to the original.

It's a fair concern. Look at what Sommers' did with The Mummy Returns.

I don't know that a sequel is such a sure thing. Granted, I had a blast.

But seeing the reaction(s) from regular movie-goers reminds me of The Incredible Hulk last summer. Us nerds ate it up and enjoyed it for what it was. Everyone else was "Meh" towards it.

I think if you do make a sequel, it'll likely suffer the same box-office fate as Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life.
Despite opening at almost $50M, and topping at around $140M (IIRC), no one actually liked the 1st Tomb Raider, hence the low expectations and underperforming of (the marginally better as in shit ice-cream vs.shit popsicle) TR2.

And Transformers 2 is nowhere near the original, which at least occasionally focused on characters and had a sense of wondrous fun instead of "coolness" overkill.

But if Sommers returns, we can justifiably fear a Mummy Returns result. This is why if they ditch him, I can only pray for a similarly fun, upbeat, pulpish director, a Joe Johnston (unlikely since he's on his way to director jail for a loooong time) or a Timur Bekmambetov. Safe bet: expect a Jonathan Mostow's GI-2.

PsycheOut00, Joe Johnston is...Not, heading to...Director's Jail, anytime soon, as he will direct...Captain America for Marvel. Timur Bekmambetov is ready to work on...Wanted 2, so if Stephen Sommers does not direct...G.I. Joe II, get...Ryuhei Kitamura, instead of...Jon Mostow, who did a worse job than...McG, on Terminator. John Milius, Paul Verhoven, Robert Rodriguez would also be solid replacements, but really...Paramount should just bring back...Stephen Sommers. YO JOE!

Hunh. Well, you better tell Marvel, because Johnston is directing Captain America.

For some reason, McG came to mind.

Well, as much as I love most of his movies, I hope he's attached himself tight to that shit then.

You honestly aren't interested to see what they do with the characters? I really like the characters in the movie (except Duke, Ripcord, and Scarlett, but at least she's hot) and would like to see them do more in a sequel.
