BIOSHOCK Your Hard Drive: An Experiment In Downloading 360 Titles

Really love having the full game on my hard drive, available anytime. Looking forward to seeing this service expand, but there's a nice little selection available already.

This is also an experiment in capturing video from my consoles. This particular video's compressed as all hell but if I can figure out how to do it a little cleaner I'm going to attempt some video reviews and such in the future. Figure it would be fun!

How long did the download take?

Wrote it in the article- an hour forty minutes. Definitely not bad for such a big file.

I started the download just before 3:00 pm. And it finished at 4:40.
Not bad in an hour and forty minutes.

I have yet to install any of my games to the HD. I just don't have the space for it with a measly 20GB of space. I highly doubt that I will download any of these titles because of that (or because I already own the good ones). Also, I like having a physical disc. If I can easily get a physical copy of a game, I'd rather do that than download it. Perhaps that's just my collector's mentality kicking in...

Edit: Oh yeah, I actually bother to read the manuals for my games, so not having a physical copy of that would bug me as well.

Yeah, I'll wait for a bigger hard drive and a faster connection before I start to download my games. Plus I was able to get Bio Shock used for $14

God help me when i get drunk and start to get bored. Whats to stop me from boozed up impulse buying now!?!?

I'd still prefer a physical copy as well, simply because then I can lend it to friends. I don't know why I don't get any sort of discount when I'm losing that bit. I lend/borrow games amongst friends and relatives a lot and I'd hate to see the day where I can't do that at all.

That's why I prefer the PS3's 5 system limit on most of their games (the only one I know of that is limited to a single system is Warhawk). You can already download Burnout Paradise as a full game online for the system as well so it's not something that seems like it would be hard for companies to do (and as with all PS3 purchases, there are no ridiculous point purchases and if it's over $5 you can just put the exact amount on your credit card).

Still, I appreciate that it will give game companies a way to distribute their games and cut out the used game store middlemen.

I'm completely over physical copies. I've got a wall of hundreds of dvds and games and I hardly ever touch them. I find myself much more likely to play a game that's already on my hard drive. I definitely need more hard drive space to make this worth it, and they'd need to start releasing new titles more frequently as well, but I really like the ease of it.

Once MS releases an HDD that isn't 100 fucking dollars I'm there.

I'd like one of those too.

Reuploaded the video in better quality, and am going to try and grab back my old copy of Bioshock from my friend (one of the bad things about lending out physical copies is you never friggin' get them all back) to do a comparison, but it's immediately obvious that the loading screens are a lot quicker. Not sure how much quicker than simply installing a disc game to your hard drive, however.

This would be awesome.

That video did nothing but make me want to load up BioShock again. I started a Brass Balls run but have only made it part way through Dr. Steinman's house of horrors.

I'd love to download Bioshock, if MS wasn't charging $10 more for it than it is at retail, with no extra content. WTF?
Really? Because over here it's £20, when it launched at £40

It's $30 at retail, same price. That's the standard Platinum Hits pricing... and the game's popular enough that they probably won't drop it any more, at least till the sequel drops. I'm sure you can get it used for cheaper, of course.

The Elite line will become the Pro line this fall. I'm hoping this will result in a price drop for the HDD.

EDIT: I wanted to add that like Alex, I'm also over physical formats. Having said that, I believe that digital copies need to be cheaper. They're saving on packaging an d shipping costs and that should be kicked back to me, the consumer. I just sold a bunch of used games these last weeks, so that's money I wouldn't have gotten back with digital purchases.

I took the stoopid plunge for a bigger hard drive after my system crapped out again on me (back in March I think), and I don't regret it at all. I like installing games to the system from the discs, and now that they have this new feature, well, it's another reason to be happy to have the bigger hard drive. I already have a backlog of games to get to, but if I was going to get any off of the new service it would probably be the Need For Speed: Most Wanted game. I had it, but loaned it to someone, and it's very unlikely that I'll be getting it back, and I don't ever really see copies of it floating around too much anymore. Looks like that one's $20 too, so I might be tempted. I really enjoyed that game...

And Alex, it looks like your test run of the video capture worked out pretty well. Video reviews or similar features might be pretty cool. Have fun with it.

Yeah, having the 120GB HDD was well worth the money it cost.

I'm pretty tempted by Battlefield : Bad Company.
Great Idea, and definatly one that will result in me buying more games.
These need to be cheaper than retail. They're saving a ton of money with digital distribution; they should be able to pass some of that saving onto the customer. Then again, this is the same service where people pay $5 to give their avatar a lightsaber.

Hey but at least the lightsabers let us know which of our friends are fools, and whose opinion never to trust again.

It's absolutely worth it for 20 bucks.

I really dug the demo, so I think I'll go ahead and download that this weekend.

I actually played through it again on hard mode this weekend, and while the single player campaign isn't the best in the world (it fucking screams for co-op) it's still a blast. And the multiplayer's great for anyone who loves 1943.
Well, I'm pretty convinced.

I seriously worry how much I'll end up spending on Games on Demand, because I'm weak as fuck when it comes to Steam already. Especially when they have their cruel weekend sales.

Yes, it was. And yes, you should.

Seriously, the 120GB HDD is worth its weight in gold. Finally not having to worry about space is so refreshing. I was lucky and got my HDD because I have an Elite, but I'd still buy the upgrade if I had a white Xbox.

Here is what sucks about the Xbox 360's 120GB hard drive ... it costs $150 DOLLARS. For $20 less, I can buy a new 500GB drive for my PS3. That's why I do almost all of my downloadable games and add-on content on my PS3 instead of my 360 (well, that and hating buying MS points).
Okay, go play games on your PS3 then.
I already said that I play more of those types of games on my PS3. My point was more that it sucks that it's affordable on one system but really overpriced on the other.

Why would you not want 360 drives to be cheaper or only buy the number of MS points you actually need? It seems like a strange thing to argue against.
I have a 60Gb hard drive for my 360 which I haven't used yet but I could swear I remember reading somewhere that transferring stuff to a 60Gb is either really dodgy or just won't work at all.

Am I better off selling the 60Gb and putting the cash toward a 120?

You cannot transfer your data to a 60GB, which is ridiculous.

So Saints Row is available, and Need for Speed ProStreet and Burnout Revenge are hitting next week. Loving that they're updating these so frequently.
Odd that they're putting up both Revenge and Paradise.

Well they're two very different games. I still pop in Revenge to get some Crash Mode on from time to time.
That's true. I generally preferred Paradise, but Revenge does have its appeal. I just think it's odd that they'd put up two games in the same franchise so early on. I would have thought that they'd want to expand the selection more quickly.

But then weren't both Viva Pinata! games up from the get-go?

Yep. And this is the third NFS title to hit the service already, as well.
They should put ALL THE MADDENS up.

In fact, they should really just change the service to MADDEN ON DEMAND.
Downloaded Burnout 3 a while ago as it was my favorate of the Burnout games.

Never played Saints Row, should I try it or skip straight to SR2?
