How did you find Chud?

Sort of a sister thread to Phil's who were you thread.

How did you arrive at this fine site?

Like I said in who were you thread I found it through a bunch of trolls and ended up staying because I really liked the place.

What about you?

Read Nick's stuff at IGN, couldn't stand the place after he and Devin left, found out that they moved here, I lurked for a while, history was made, etc.

First went to chud after looking at the "external reviews" section for an IMDB movie, and it linked to chud. I soon discovered, out of teh whole world of film critism, chud, followed by avclub.com,w ere the sights i most agreed with most often, and then i stuck around chud and became a very active news reader.

Followed a link about Episode I from Coming Attractions or Dark Horizons, can't remember which.

Caught Nick's infamous "Fuck This Face" series, laughed my ass off, then signed aboard.

I think that's the same with me. I used to visit both those sites quite a bit, but I do remember how I got here was prequel related.

I actually had a bet with myself that there would be a lot of "prequel" answers to this question.....

And people say they weren’t good for anything.

Basically, something like this. It was definitely a link at Coming Attractions that brought me here. I had to check out any website named CHUD. It's been love ever since.
I clicked a link. No idea where though. Probably ComingSoon.net or AICN.

Equilibrium.

Clicked a link from Dark Horizons; I think that I abandoned DH soon after discovering CHUD.

I clicked on a link from somewhere but I can't remember where.

A link from an article on Empire Online.

I'd been reading for a while, CHUD was one of those sites that I always had on my favorites list, but I ended up making it my "home" when I got sick of the JoBlo forums and I discovered the CHUD Podcast.
I think I went to a screening that was done by CHUD back in early 2001, and then I saw a posting for a CHUD coffee meeting at a place that was right near me. And even though I met Steve Murphy first, I still hung around for the rest of the meeting.

By coincidence, when my wife was going through chemo around the same time, her nurse practitioner happened to be Nick's wife. So she met Nick's wife right after I met Nick.

I found the site while looking up stuff on 'Equilibrium' back when it first was released.
I found Chud when I started seeing my current boyfriend - we've been together a year, so that's about how long I've been lurking around. He recommended the site to me but I didn't join the forums for ages because I'm already on too many sites. I finally decided to join, but sign ups were disabled. As soon as I could I registered, and I've been here since

I got here via AICN sometime around 2000. That site and all its ilk have melted away since then except for CHUD (and the av club, but their snottiness really shines through on those movie podcasts [and Nathan Rabin's book looks really irritating]). Long live CHUD!

I first went on the internet to research all that was online about...Star Trek: First Contact for my supervisor Kevin Ryan, at Pocket Books...Star Trek Department. We didn't even have a pic of the new...Enterprise 1701-E, til I found it online. The 2nd site I found was...CHUD.COM! I remembered the name of the site, was similar to that film...C.H.U.D., so I checked it out and have been here ever since. It was in 1998 and I lurked here for 8-9 years before I checked out any Message Boards, but CHUD.COM was the first for that as well.

The way I found this place always struck me as pretty serendipitous. I was just clicking around on the internet one day years back and stumbled across those old "Devin Sucks" t-shirts and pondered why anyone would think that about someone named Devin (that being my own name) and decided to check out this CHUD place. Instantly loved it. Been reading ever since, deciding last year to finally take the plunge and join the forums on occasion.
Devin recommended it to me.

i tried out AV club commenting, but they are all mean over there they were snobby about the fact i like Alexander. so i left.

Hence the "Devin Sucks" t-shirts.

EDIT: Sorry, don't mean to de-rail. I just saw that set up there and took it.

I followed the stench from IGN and ended up here.
similarly, i clicked a link on AICN (which i found through a link on upcomingmovies) about four years ago. needless to say, it was a revelation. i pretty much don't bother with any other movie sites now.
Got hooked after I clicked on a link from Aintitcool. Now I visit this site more then any other. Right about the time of Equilibrium, like many others here.

Seems like Nick and Devin should be thanking Ep 1 or Equilibrium :-P
post #27 of 60
I have not gone to AICN in over three years. One day I woke up and realized my life would be far richer if I never read the phrase "geekgasm" again
post #28 of 60
Did a random Google search on Serenity after seeing the film and found Devin's screed against the Browncoats, a fanbase I never knew existed. The article was illuminating.

I used to spend a lot of time on the old AICN forums which were really difficult to find and completely unmoderated. I'll be honest, the old AICN forums (I'm talking 10 years ago) were so out of the way that I don't believe Harry even knew they existed. A small group of us formed a really great community with some amazing film discussion. At some point Harry realized he had forums and that they were under-utilized and decided to revamp them. Our small community of folks didn't really want to be there when the expected deluge of talkbackers happened, so when the forums went down to be replaced we just never came back.

Some of us scattered out to different forums trying to find a place that we liked. I tried lots of places and stumbled upon CHUD where the style and humor appealed to me, and it seemed like a large community of pretty knowledgeable folks. I first got here during the amazing Scientology invasion at the time of Battlefield Earth*. At that time I had a different screen name which I promptly forgot, so a few months later when I joined again I used the same name I'd used on the AICN boards.

*seriously, this isn't talked about much for how amazing it seemed at the time

Followed a link from Darkhorizons, which had been my go-to site up until that time. I thought the CHUD facts were literally the funniest thing I ever read.

It was about a year before I joined the forums, and almost another entire year before I actually started posting regularly. In fact, I only joined the forums so I could ask the name of a film I'd forgotten. I was given the answer in under a minute.
Can't say for certain how I found CHUD, but I'm reasonably sure it was from Dark Horizons or AICN. The Carnivale thread is what got me to finally join the boards.
While I used to read Dark Horizons/AICN quite a lot since late 90's, somehow I never knew a place like CHUD existed until I accidently found it while googling some info on "Freaks and Geeks" in 2003 or 2004.
Link from AICN. Probably around Prequel time. Maybe. I misremember. I found the forums through conducting searches of the main page.

edit: I found that the forums were worthwhile through doing searches.
I can't remember exactly, but I remember the coverage of Slither over at Bloody-Disgusting probably had something to do with it. I clicked on a link to this site, and checked out the message board, and signed up within the month. Didn't want to just be a lurker.
IGN. I was over there during the height of Hollow Man jokes and Nations being Punched. When they (Nick and Devin) left, I asked one of the editors where they went. That's how I came here.
I was reading "Greg's Previews" on Yahoo pretty religiously, not really understanding that there were other sites out there handling the same content with personality and humor. I followed a couple of links to AICN for a week or two and then found a link to CHUD. I started reading CHUD more and more exclusively. After a couple years I joined the forums, my first post involving a deep allegory for Bubba Ho-Tep.
another AICN convert here. read something mentioning CHUD on a talkback and got hooked. despite my post count I've been lurking for like 5 years.
I've alway(s) read CHUD for the new(s)/review(s) - but never bothered with the board(s). I had rented some B-Action movie(s) and wanted to see if like-minded folk(s) shared my quirky interest in them. So I Googled Dolph Lundgren/B Action and came upon Nick's thread about interviewing Dolph and I read the question(s) being asked and Molti's question about "How does it feel to kick a man on fire?" had me rolling. Found the B-Action Movie Thread and bada-bing... Over one million view(s) later. History on the Interweb(s) has been made.

Hey Nick, release the fucking boring-ass interview of Dolph, god-damn it. Inquiring mind(s) want to know.
MrMushnik and Baltarstar, though Baltarstar didn't sign up for the boards until after me. They were showing me episode 3 stuff.
I really cant say how i first stumbled upon CHUD. I didn't visit movie sites very much, let alone belong to a forum, prior to CHUD. Chances are I probably went through Creature Corner and ended up here.

I do know that the thread about using the bathroom in public places is what led me to register or at least start posting.
Thru comicbookresources. Read Nick's tearing apart of movie posters and been lurking ever since.
Surfing Fango for Freddy vs. Jason news and ended up reading regularly. They kept talking about a place called Creature Corner so I'd check it out from time to time and one day I wondered what in the hell that CHUD Logo was all about so I clicked it. And voila.
I'm pretty sure it was back in 2003 on Coming Attractions.
On a forum for a comedy podcast there was a thread lamenting the tiny number of comedy podcasts that were actually funny. One of the posters claimed that while the CHUDshow is fundamentally a film-based podcast, it's funnier than all the comedy shows. And he was right.

Yep. Ditto.

Huh... I didn't realize that I'd been reading Nick and Devin's stuff on IGN well before I ever heard of CHUD. That's great. Because I used to love stuff like The Nation's Punched. So THAT was the reason I eventually stopped going to IGN for reviews... Nick left!

I came to CHUD from links from other movie sites and found Nick's reviews. But only for those, because they were hilarious. Never stayed around, but always came back for those. Then Devin started writing here and I came back more and more. Eventually figured I'd use the message boards because it looked like a cool community. I guess after posting on IMDB for a while, ANYTHING would've looked cool.
I believe it was a link through AICN that brought me here the first time. I actually only signed onto the boards to comment on the Nations Punched website.
My college roommate (JBanks) forwarded me links to Slater's Holiday Orgy of Despair DVD reviews (which are still unsurpassed).
A friend of mine kept recommending the CHUD Show to me at regular intervals. When I finally got around to listening, I got hooked and started reading the site and forums. Occasionally I'll stick my head out to post.
