Help program a slasher franchise fest

Hey guys. So I'm cro-programming an event at LA's Silent Movie Theater in October. The whole month is slasher films, but we want to do a night that is a tribute to the big 3: FRIDAY THE 13TH, HALLOWEEN and A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. We are planning to show one film from each series on one bill.

So here's the deal -- if given the chance to see one each of these franchises on the big screen, which ones would you choose? Now obviously the originals are all highly regarded. But if you live near a city, chances are you'll be able to see them at revival houses or midnight shows. So we're sort of hoping that people will take an interest in some of the later, rarely screened entries. For example, when do you EVER think you'd get a chance to see HALLOWEEN 4 on the big screen, or FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 7?

Obviously if you don't live in LA you can't reap the benefits of this, but you can be part of the discussion. In a week or so we're going to have a poll at the Cinefamily website where anyone can vote on what we show that night. It's all about bringing it to the people.

I thought I'd open it up for discussion here in the forums, cause I like talking about these movies anyway.

Yeah, that bill was discussed. The problem is that we couldn't show FRIDAY 3 in 3-D. I like FRIDAY 4 the best, so that was also thrown about.

HALLOWEEN is tough because none of the sequels come anywhere near the quality of the original. And the original gets shown around town here occaisionally, especially around Halloween, so a screening of it wouldn't be so special. I'm pushing for 4 because I never saw it in the theater and think it's fun.

If you can swing the projection required for 3D, part 3 of F13 is a must just to break up the slasher samey-ness.

We can't swing for 3D but we do have access to a print of HALLOWEEN III. That would break up the slasher samey-ness!

Everyone involved loves FRIDAY 3; it's the presentation that's a concern. We could try to project the new 3D DVD, but I imagine that would be a headache-inducing disaster.

I nominate Friday 6 if part 3 is going to be problematic.

It's really difficult to find screenings of the original Halloween.

Halloween: The Original
Friday: The Final Chapter
Nightmare: Dream Warriors

Jason Lives is a better movie than TFC, but Final Chapter kind of sums Friday up, same as Dream Warriors does with Elm Street.

Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter
Halloween III (If not, then go with the first one)
A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (Go out with a laugh)

I hear what you're saying about the original being shown frequently enough to not be special anymore. I'm gonna be different & nominate Halloween 2, which I think is almost like the second act of a really long Halloween I, and a fair tolerable sequel, IMO. I'd be willing to bet no one's seen it on the big screen in awhile, either. Halloween III is a great little flick, but not really part of the "franchise", so I could see why you may not want to show that one, but ya gotta admit: THAT would break up the slasher samey-ness if you went with that one instead. Maybe Jason X for comic relief, & to bring things into the 21st Century? Then again, many may have seen that in theatres; part VIII maybe? The punch decap is worth it for the laughs alone. And I know it's controversial 'round these parts, but I've always been partial to New Nightmare. I love the whole meta concept. Best sequel in that franchise, IMO.

These would all be easy because we've booked them before. But HALLOWEEN III would be a cheat because it doesn't feature Michael and we're selling this as a celebration of slashers.

Iggy, I would actually be down to show FRIDAY VIII or VII. To me, seeing those in a theater with a crowd of like-minded irreverent viewers would be a blast. I'm very much a lover of bad film though; my taste will err on the side of campy fun and maybe that's not the best route.

Oh, and HALLOWEEN II is screening tonight at midnight at the New Beverly, not that it would stop us from booking it. They struck a new print and we'd probably be able to get it pretty easily.

Part 6 is a good call for an all around crowd-pleaser.

NO ONE will go for part 5, which I love for all the wrong reasons.
