What is that from?

Why would you expect this guy to source anything?

Third one down. Although, the author says he doesn't believe Raimi stole it, it's just coincidence, so this thread title is misleading.

Thanks for the link! I might pick up that book, too.

Like I said on the Drag Me to Hell thread: Why is this news? Either it's a coincidence, or the Raimis used it as source inspiration. They used an issue of Eerie Comics as inspiration for Evil Dead, not to mention the fact that Raimi directed three Spider Man movies. It's cool someone found the comic, but I don't see how it's a shock.

It has as many things different (for starters, the Lamia doesn't possess it's victims and make them commit suicide in DMtH) as it does things that are similar (the Lamia, a Swami, the train tracks), none of which are horror/suspsense devices that were invented by this comic strip, so I see this more as inspiration than an outright rip off.

Man, I saw this movie O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU and I thought it had the most kick-ass story. Then I read this book called THE ODYSSEY and it was like the exact same story! What a rip-off!

the odyssey, having been written thousands of years ago, is public domain and out of copywrite, thats why the cohen brothers did not need to cite it as a source, i believe

No, they did, it's right there in the opening credits.

Yeah, the plot of Drag Me To Hell is hardly very noteworthy or unique (nor is it meant to be), and it's totally normal that there would be works that used these stock devices in that particular order before. It's a fun coincidence, something I just love about genre, how memes survive through decades, eras and diferent mediums with tropes surviving, or rising in and out of favour. Pushes my Philip José Farmer/LOEG buttons, too.

I could tell that was an EC comic just by looking at those panels. HAUNT OF FEAR. The hardcover EC reprints of recent years are well worth getting. HORRORHOUND magazine recently had a great EC retrospective issue that attempted to match up every screen adaptation of EC comics with the issue #(s) they were based on. And I bet there are still quite a few which have never been filmed

The ignore function works great until people quote those people I ignore. And that is not cool.

Since this topic's come back again, Raimi has since said DMTH was actually based on the old British Horror Night of the Demon, which was in turn an adaptation of the classic MR James story Casting of the Runes. The above comic is fairly clearly based on the same.

In other news, the Bible's a derivative work.

Define 'since.' He was namedropping NIGHT OF THE DEMON during the publicity tour leading up to the release.

Just seen all this furore and stupidly thought most people knew this already... I am a bit slow on here I must admit... anyway, for those of you who want to learn more and see a couple of good examples of old horror/ brit horror tv check these out

and...

For what it is worth, Raimi took some of these ideas very obviously and then ran with them and made them his own... as an artist myself I can see how this reduces the impact of the work to a degree but what he did with it, how he twisted it to make it his own, can be considered a very, very successful piece of work... I don't understand the problem some of you have with it.

As far as I can tell nobody went on about the story... the praise was mostly for the jumps, zippy pace and whacky twists and turns; all Raimi trademarks.
