Aachi and Ssipak

So this is a full length Korean animation from a couple of years ago.

The plot is very silly. In the future energy is made from poo. So the government rewards citzens for pooping with a 'juicy bar' which is very addictive. The 'juicy bars' have turned a bunch of the population into small blue mutants, who form a bandit group called the Diaper Gang. Meanwhile the main characters are two low-lifes who trade in 'juicy bars'.

This is one of those movies where it started off so insanely, I thought it was the best thing ever. But by the end, I wasn't so sure.

It starts with the Diaper Gang a government armored vehicle containing 'juicy bars'. It's hard to describe without seeing it, but it is somewhat like Smurfs meet Mad Max. Then the super cop Geko gets involved which is now something like Smurfs meets Mad Max meets Anime meets ultraviolence.

The rest of the film never matches the opening scene. The characters and plot are secondary to all the mayhem and poo. It was worth seeing, but not all that great.

Has anyone else seen this?

Hmmm... no responses.

Ok I'll put it another way. I dare some chewers to track down and watch this film. The first chewer who sees it after reading this post gets 100 filmic karma points from me

That does look pretty damn strange, but I liked the style of a lot of it. The character-intro freeze-frames were cool. The character design actually reminds me most of RUGRATS... except now they're in some post-apocalyptic wasteland action movie. Ha!

Saw it at Fantastic Fest a couple years ago.

Pretty fucking awesome.

Yeah, I own this one. I love popping it in from time to time and showing friends some the action sequences. They usually get a kick out of it especially the ones who enjoyed Dead Leaves.

The story is all over the place and isn't very good nor are the characters but I love the visual style and the crazy over-the-top action sequences.

This movie's almost a far superior version/parody of WONDERFUL DAYS, the technically impressive yet creatively dire mega-budget Korean animated feature from 2003 that was about a segregated-by-caste future society that's powered by the waste of the poor. WONDERFUL DAYS was supposed to be the classy standard bearer for the Korean animation industry but it flopped big time. It was a film made of elaborate combinations of live action, CGI, stop-motion, and cel animated elements with reworked scenes ripped off from Mamoru Oshi and Hayao Miyazaki films and one seriously awful English language song that they couldn't just play once. I have to suspect that the intent here was, at least in part, to literally shit all over that film, a notorious and self-impressed would-be crossover smash turned boondoggle in Korean animation which richly deserves to get the piss taken out of it.

ACHII AND SSIPAK doesn't live up to its two phenomenal action set-pieces, but that's a damn high bar to clear. It's a fun, rude, well-made little animated comedy that aims low and pretty much succeeds at what it sets out to do. Gotta love the "tracking device removal" scene. One of the better Korean animated films, for certain - but I wish that statement meant more than it ultimately does.
