I ended up simply going back to school to train for a different field after my last employer went out of business.  I empathize, Cylon, and hope you will keep us posted.

It's a friggin miracle that I've been able to survive (albeit paycheck to paycheck) on contract/freelance alone for a year and a half. If I can preach anything:

Call in favors.

Take advantage of every opportunity.

Be versatile.

Save.

Pray.

I have 6 weeks left in this job till Redundancy kicks in.  I had been asked to stay on, (with a hefty retention bonus) but September is rapidly approaching so kicking the job hunting up a gear.  The real pain in the ass has been not being able to go for a lot of jobs because i really dont want to loose out on the bonus if i don't stay to the end.

But I think the aboslute kicker was having to deal with a whiney staff memeber last night working on a bid who couldnt print 3 lousy lables on her printer, forcing the poor hard done my mite to hand write them. This would be a member of the team that half assed the bid my company lost resulting in my department is being made redundant. 

I really don't know how i didn't cock punch the lot of them.

I'm offering up www.usajobs.gov as a resource to land a government job.  A few friends of mine have found work through this website.  The jobs pay well, the benefits are great, and there's plenty of work out there for civilians.  Give it a go.
