When to say enough is enough? (Or how I finally gave up on Rivers Cuomo) - Page 5

Most consistently 'classic Weezer' sounding record they've done for a while, maybe even since Green. Otherwise business as usual for a modern Weezer album: two or three great pop songs, some okay ones, and some filler that's too simple and generic to be interesting at all. Their problem has long been lax quality control more than an inability to write good songs - there's a pretty great pop album buried in the last three. And hey at least they're not letting the other guys sing any more.

I'd agree with all of that.

I'm enjoying Ruling Me more than anything from Weezer since Pinkerton for what it's worth.

I’ll argue that the first 4 or 5 tracks are as strong as anything post-Pinkerton, which I know is not saying much, but I don’t get the constant douche-chills from this disc that I’ve gotten from the Make Believe-Red-Raditude triumvirate. Hell, some of these songs might actually be the best stuff they’ve done in a decade (and this is coming from someone who really dislikes later era Weezer). The album doesn’t match the goofy-weirdness of Maladroit, or even the focused pop of Green, but it’s good. Surprisingly.

*turning this into 'any cool Weezer news' thread*

Don't call it a compilation!

If there's anyone left in this thread with a shred of interest, yet another "new" Weezer album is out on Nov. 2nd. I'm intrigued to hear the stuff that was done in the mysterious era between Pinkerton and Green, but I can't help but feel something resembling dread about this.

I loved "Hurley" for the first week, and then the magic wore off - It's not terrible, but I feel like it's pretty damn middling.

107.7 The End hosts 2 tracks from Death to False Metal here

"Autopilot" is surprisingly awesome - Love everything about it. Optimism for this album is rising... cautiously. "The Odd Couple" is pretty decent too.

Saw the Thermals last night and their last song was a cover of "My Name is Jonas." I'm pretty sure that's the only live Weezer I was ever going to need.

I'm actually still digging Hurley. It hasn't worn on me. I'm also kinda digging Weezer's work ethic right now. I love that a band is putting out material this frequently, even if it's just collections of unreleased material and deluxe re-masters with bonus material. I think I heard they have another album planned for 2011. I can get with that rather than the modern release schedule of a new album every 3-4 years by most bands - or at least it seems that way.

Picked up "Death to False Metal" today, and lo and behold, it's pretty fun. Mostly light and insubstantial, but it's fun.

"I Don't Want Your Loving" and "Losing My Mind" in particular are definitely worth checking out.

I love the chessy early '80s-ness of "Autopilot." Overall I am liking the "new" album, as well as I am glad to finally have some of those Pinkerton b-sides and demos officially now.

well they just performed their first set of Memories tour dates, playing all of Blue one night and all of Pinkerton the next night, and judging by videos on youtube it looked like an amazing event.

it's just impossible to quit this guy.
