Seriously, people feel ashamed for Cake? Cake is a great band with one or two annoying songs that got way too much play on the radio. But for every "Short Skirt Long Jacket", there's a "Frank Sinatra" and a "Mexico" (those are the good ones, fyi). They're also fantastic live, and John McRae get's a million cool points from me for his incredible duet with Ben Folds.

I'm not even that big on them, but I have to say that their style is unique enough to warrant their disqualification from this thread.

Plus, as a musician, I have to respect some of the grooves they lay down.

I have a few friends who were like that, luckily they listened to the "cool stuff". I don't know if it was non-Christians joining Christian labels because it was easier, or what, but I've heard some really great stuff on Christian labels. Mostly metal/industrial/hardcore stuff. Not overly preachy, if at all.

*dies a horrible death*
No, don't die yet. That soundtrack was at least interesting for the fact that Davis could sing in the movie, but couldn't on the CD, so it ended up full of bizarre Jonathan Davis covers all due to contract crap. Not that any of the songs were great to begin with.

Cake is harmless and fun. It's not my thing really, but I don't know why anyone would actively hate the band or be totally ashamed.

Unbearable's the word. I stand by my claim. 'Skillfully executed' is a qualifier that can be used for a lot of shitty music. Just catching them on the radio immediately makes me feel dirty. And I know a lot of people (including good friends and familiy) who will defend them vigorously, and imo they should all be ashamed.

I used to listen to 311. I was high. ANd stupid.

I LIKE Avenged Sevenfold... Do I deserve to die?

Eh. I actually kinda dug that soundtrack. And it more or less fit what I thought Lestat's band would sound like if they'd come out at the height of nu-metal.

Also, that soundtrack introduced me to kidneythieves. Good stuff, there.

Staind's an interesting case. Their first two albums are actually not bad at all. There's some interesting bass/guitar/vocal harmonies going on, and the lyrics, while still not great, at least sound earnest. Break The Cycle turns them musically boring, but theyre still unique in that there's a genuine effort on the part of Aaron Lewis to identify his problems and fix them. 13 Shades of Gray is damn near a HAPPY nu-metal album. Its a pleasant progression, especially for the genre.

Of course, now, theyre ENTIRELY boring. Which is sad.

Isn't that the band where every song started with the same guitar riff? Down down diggity-di down.

I don't care for them, but there's really no denying the fact that Sinister Gates has got some serious guitar playing skills.
He lacks a great deal of "naming self to preserve human dignity" skills, though.

He and the drummer - equally hilariously named The Reverend Tholomew Plague - are the reason I like them. Some of their duelling guitar stuff is spectacular.

Avenged Sevenfold are a total guilty pleasure of mine. Pure cheese-tasticness. It's like Axel Rose started a hardcore band.

I'm sorry, but the best duelling guitar lead band is Iron Maiden with Judas Priest and Lynyrd Skynyrd closely tied for second. The duelling solos between IM's Dave Murray and Adrian Smith in the early 80s are fantastic.

Regarding Avenged Sevenfold: my main issue with them is with their terrible lead singer, M. Shadows. He has no voice, no range, and no apparent talent that I can identify.
Avenged Sevenfold fucking sucks... but I wouldn't go so far as to stick them in this thread I suppose.

Now Dragonforce...

Or Shadows Fall...
Dragonforce is unlistenable noise.

And their Guitar Hero level almost gave me carpal tunnel syndrome.

And that's EXACTLY what that band was made for. They're just wiz-bang technical wizardry with no soul that's only real worth is to give somebody a tough level on a video game.

From what I've heard, they can't pull off that level of 'technical wizardry' live. Has anyone seen them that can back this up?
Yeah, Avenged Sevenfold is good... I'm not ashamed of liking them at all. I agree their singer is weak but they put together some solid harmonies to mask it. The Rev not only kills on drums but he actually sings all the high notes (while drumming) that the singer can't hit live. It's pretty unbelievable actually.

Fuck Dragonforce... gimmicky nonsense.

Dueling Guitars? Thin Lizzy... not as technically proficient as Maiden but some of the best nonetheless.

Rando mentioned Godsmack on here and no one agreed? Come on, they are soooooo terrible. They overshadowed his other mention of C+C Music Factory!

The good thing about Avenged Sevenfold is that it introduced a LOT of kids to that dual guitar style; I've introduced several people to Thin Lizzy and Maiden after they told me that they liked A.S.

Not really. People still go see them, but people still go see Air Supply.

i liked the band custom after they released a single that a friend played for me back in highschool ... then i grew up and discovered ravi shankar.

I just noted when I was at the Rock & Roll Museum last year they had an entire section to themselves. But that may have just been good timing.

Loosely defined.

3 posts about duel guitar greats with no mention of the Allmans makes Baby Jesus chug turpentine.

Theyre not nearly as bad as some of the other shit I've heard lobbed around in this thread. Theyre just incredibly basic and uninspired 90% of the time. Then every once in a while, they pull Get Up Get Out or Spiral out of their ass, and I kinda dig 'em.

I'll take Sully Erna's desperate need for people to go away over fucking Dragonforce any damn day of the week.

Also, their live show is fucking stellar.

I'd hate to think anyone's ashamed for having liked the Allman Brothers.

Maybe the Doobie Brothers.

No, but the segment I was referencing had moved beyond that.

Yeah, I know. That was my oh so subtle way of pointing out that we had moved a bit off topic.

To return us to topic: another couple of really crappy bands that I liked for a year or two? Vanilla Fudge and Iron Butterfly.

ETA: Fuck, I just remembered-- I paid MONEY to see Three Dog Night.

Damn, I didn't think anyone was going to post anything more abysmal than Live but you got me well beat. Nothing is worse than Christian Rock.

I notice no one's mentioned fucking P.O.D. yet.

Proud to say I hated that band from moment one.
Seeing PUSA mentioned above makes me sad. Any band containing two members taught by the late great Mark Sandman (previously of the incredible Morphine) shouldn't be in a thread like this.
