I unabashedly love Live up through Throwing Copper (yes, BOTH albums) still. My musical shames: Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, MC Hammer, and Richard Marx. Then I turned 14.

Christopher Lee is not amused: Rhapsody (of Fire) is his favorite metal band. I'M SERIOUS.

I find that whole genre of D&D speedmetal to be tiring to listen to.

Aquarium by Aqua is the first album I ever bought which probably tells you far more about me than I'd like to let on.

Eh, I'll listen to Def Leppard up through Pyromania. Sure, it's ridiculous, but like old Judas Priest, specifically British Steel, it's actually pretty pure rock and roll, and not worthy of the scorn placed on later albums by either band.

Dragonforce also sucks because of the anti-music equation. They're Rhapsody/Blind Guardian jr.

I think they're cheesy fun. Not the greatest, but certainly not shit.

The first album I ever bought was UGLY KID JOE - UGLY AS THEY WANNA BE.

I was 12.

Musically speaking I probably have no reason to be ashamed to love Metallica, but after reading too many interviews and watching Some Kind of Monster I'm embarrassed that I like music made by such douchebags. I wonder if Weezer fans feel the same way?
I used to own a cassette tape of Bat Out Of Hell 2: Back Into Hell.

*sobs*
Dragonforce is shit because it's overly technical guitar noodle garbage. Sure, it's technically incredible, but it sounds like someone's dick hitting a Casio.

Dude, comparing Weezer and Metallica (even if they suck now), is like comparing a Ford Tempo with an old Ferrari.

EDIT: Brad's right. The whole power/D&D metal is just a mix of ultra-shitty lyrics and always more complicated guitar and keyboard solos.
It's more about the attitude of the band than the relative merits of their music. I've heard numerous times about how much of a douche Rivers Cuomo is.

Def Leppard got bland and stayed bland, though. After 'Turbo' and 'Ram it Down', JP got back into form on 'Painkiller'. Their last 2 albums with Halford have been pretty solid metal albums, even if they didn't really do anything commercially.

I actually thought they were a joke band when I saw the video for Through The Fire and the Flame. I find it perplexing that the band has non-ironic fans.

That conversation is actually going on in another thread as we speak.

ANYONE who can tell me that Johnette doesn't have one of the greatest female voices in rock is a fool. And while not all of their albums are winners, there are more than enough individual songs that are great. Throwing them in a thread with Korn and its ilk is terrifying.

Here's another one: Jefferson Starship.

Forget 'Red Octopus', that's a great album and doesn't count for this - I'm talking about the Mickey Thomas years when they went commercial. I liked 'Jane', 'Find Your Way Back', and a couple of other songs when they were brand new in the 80s, but I cringed when they released 'Nuclear Furniture'. Kantner left and so did I. The less said about Starship, the better.

I STILL love 'Jane', though.

Allow me to donate The Donnas into this repository of shame. What was I thinking?
I stuck with the Offspring until like, Conspiracy of One.

That's pretty shameful.

What's wrong with The Donnas?

I'm not really a fan or anything but I just don't see anything inherently shitty about the band. Just a basic rock/punk band who happen to be chicks.

Yeah, "Joey" pretty much absolves Concrete Blonde of any wrong-doing ever.

Smash is still pretty fucking awesome.

I was a huge fan of Limp Bizkit, Disturbed, Drowning Pool and a bunch of other lousy numetal bands.

I've never cheered for a singer's death. Until the Drowning Pool's one died of natural causes. Karma for that one song, maybe?

Brad- Why someone's dick? Does a dick hitting a key sound different than someone's finger? How can you tell?

Anyway, the first music that really spoke to me was the dance music they used to play on Saturday night on KZZP (104.7 FM) in Phoenix around 1987. Saturday night hot mixes, they called it. I loved that stuff. Then I got into Punk. Which would explain the Vengaboys MP3s I have sitting along with my Avail ones. It would also explain my terrible taste in music.

Having grown up in the era of hair bands I confess to liking at various points:

Ratt
Cinderella
WASP
Stryper
Haggar-era Van Halen
Helix
White Lion

'5150' is still a great album, and 'OU812' has its moments ('Source of Infection' would have been a great DLR era song), so I really think that it's unfair to totally dismiss them or claim to hate them now.

I listened to Sparkle and Fade not too long ago, and it kind of holds up, actually. The lyrics sound a bit dumber than they did when I was in my early 20s and it's unnerving how "You Make Me Feel Like a Whore" served as the template for just about every lackluster single that came after, but there are some genuinely good songs on there.

Yeah, they're inconsistent, but the best stuff is still pretty darn good.

There are some halfway decent songs on 5150 and OU812. After that, there's pretty much no excuse. You're right that it's kind of unfair to compare the two eras, but it's still so depressing that the band responsible for "Panama" and "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" also released fucking "Poundcake."

What is so awesome is that nobody remembers the brief Gary Cherone era of Van Halen. Jesus.

Well, you can't be young and horny forever, eventually you're just old and kind of creepy. 5150 does have some good songs on it, but I place the downfall of =VH= not on Sammy Hagar, but on Eddie himself. The fire just went out of his playing after Dave left/got kicked out/whatever. No more explosive work, still great guitar playing, but a lot more subtle, which clashed a lot with albums "cleverly" title f.u.c.k. .

Where does Meco fall in the Hall of Shame list? When I was nine or ten, I couldn't get enough of the disco theme to Star Wars.

'FUCK' and 'Balance' are both garbage, but they aren't so bad that they make you reevaluate their first two albums. Indeed, I'll take '5150' over 'Women and Children First' or 'Diver Down' in the VH catalog.

Who is this Gary Cherone of which you speak?
He was an extreme-ly late to the party glam rocker.

Nuno Bettencourt doesn't get enough love, though.
Nuno can play the fuck out of a guitar. Too bad that he creates such shitty music with his talent.
I own, liked, and still kinda sorta have just a little have some affection for Scott Weiland's first solo album 12 Bar Blues. I don't even like Stone Temple Pilots. I'm a little confused about that...
I thought about mentioning Stone Temple Pilots, who I liked, but am aware that is not a popular opinion these days.

I figured my musical taste was already suspect enough with knowing who Gary Cherone or Chip Z Nuff are.
Keith, you probably liked Candlebox!

I shamefully took Another Bad Creation's side during their ATL rivalry with Kriss Kross-what was I thinking?!! Oh, Biv!
Hated Candlebox. They're still around!

Brother loved them, so therefore I hated them.

I probably am the king of liking 90's bands that are intellectually suspect, like The Toadies or the Pumpkins.
Do any Europeans out there still carry a flame for Babylon Zoo? That 'Spaceman' song of theirs was HUGE when I was over there in 1996. HUGE.
We got duped by a Levi's commercial.

Compared to some other bands being mentioned, I guess Everclear isn't so bad, but what made me think of them first when I saw this thread was not just that I liked them, buthow much I liked them, specifically World Of Noise, but also Sparkle. I drove 50 miles in a snowstorm to see them at a tiny bar/club in Connecticut in '95. I tried very hard (successfully, but I'm not sure if that makes it better or worse) to win tickets to a Christmas concert sponsored by the local alt-rock radio station because they were on the bill. I liked them liked them.

ETA: Now the Toadies, Pumpkins, and STP are being named here? I don't think any of those bands belong.
Did anyone ever like the Toadies? I didn't but they have a pretty big following based off of that one song that's nothing but a bunch of hooks and choruses strung together, culminating in that endless chant of "DO YOU WANNA DIIIIIIIIE?" What's that song called again? It's in Guitar Hero I think.

They came to Boston not too long ago and the band ended up at one of the local dive bars. I went into the bathroom to pee and then the Toadies lead singer came in to use the urinal next to me.

I had a few beers and I couldn't resist. I turned to the guy and asked with a sing-song voice, "Do you gotta pee?"
I spent my early teens obsessively listening to Linkin Park. And I mean obsessive. According to my iTunes I have listened to the song "Breaking the Habit" over 800 times. It's rather depressing to think of all the things I could have done with that time instead.

Then I stopped being a stupid angst-ridden teenager and started listening to normal people music. I still don't have the best taste, but at least I like more than one fucking band.

By no means do I hate them but at one time I considered them one of my favourite bands. I now know I was wrong.

World of Noise and Sparkle and Fade were pretty good records. Everclear had that thick grungy sound that really lit my fire during that era. In fact, Alexakis turned me on to Gibson guitars (I was a total Strat man till then), which is something that I will always love him for.

I concur with DaveB though. Once their song Santa Monica became the template for all subsequent songs, they really began to suck.

He and Robert Palmer do a version of Devo's Girl U Want that is so over the top and histrionic that it had to be a joke. It was glorious.
