When I think of 'the 80's sound', like Z-Man, it's the lack of rough edges that rub me the wrong way. (That and a phasing out of Mandolin/piano/natural instruments) I guess this was a carry over from late 70's AOR. Gave pop an almost 'futuristic' sound, and at the time did seem like a progression from 60's. Now, feels cold/ stale and soulless.
I think Prince is the Artist who used the techniques of the era the best. (I know, bold statement!). His period discography actually makes me marvel at the production, not become distracted by it.
Mainstream R&B and Country were even more neg affected by these trends. The 70's outlaws and funk bands suddenly got polished and wimpy. (Willie Nelson's "Always On My Mind"/ Kool & the Gang)
Obviously, punk & hip-hop were the bright, shining exceptions.
