I'm just surprised a man who job is to research viruses decided to spend time doing this rather than, you know, curing swine flu or something.

You do this for *fun*, just because you have a technical skill/inclination doesn't mean you have to provide something useful.

I just love the fact that the last part of the artlce is the author pointing out how easy it would be to kill zombie's with modern weapons.

Wuh? Did you read his job description? He's a mathematician. The only difference between a "real job study" and this one is that the said plague, zombies, ain't a real one. I honestly don't give a shit if he did that instead of surfing the internet, really.
