Trailer's up.

Impressions?

I'll take the hit and say it.

"LOL NOT PHOTOREAL"
Also, can someone with a more graphic design bent answer me this...

Are they using fucking PAPYRUS as the font for this movie? Because that looks a whole lot like they're just fucking using Papyrus.

I think it's a huge mistake to showcase the game in that crappy quality. It looks like ass.
Get some decent HD trailers up and we'll see. But i'm just not feeling it.
It looks like a video game.

I mean, are they trying to convince us they're revolutionizing games as well now?
Also I'm almost certain that IS Papyrus, in which case LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL.

Look, I'm going to be laughing about the Papyrus thing all day, so just ignore me.
OK, pardon my ignorance but I have to ask...what's so funny about Papyrus?

The game itself looks OK, I guess; nothing Earth shattering that hasn't been done before. It looks like a cross between 'Halo' and the Gungan battle from 'SW: Episode 1'.
Because they spent all this money and technology on making all this incredible CGI and perfecting the visuals of the world, and then for the logo they pick a fucking Windows stock font.

That's kind of hilarious to me.

The game looks pretty good actually.
I found an HD-ish version of this trailer, and I thought it looked okay for a game, not that they really showed what gameplay is actually like. I certainly got a Halo vibe from it like this is some sort of spin-off or something.

Close. Too close.

But there's one thing we can all agree on- that trailer wasn't very good. - Alex

Um, sorry I have to disagree with you. The teaser for the movie was good. The game looks good as well.
as far as photo realism goes, mirrors edge and far cry 2 look better
post #17 of 37
Looks like a very colorful new Turok game with lots of bloom lighting.

So they ripped Papyrus off! Even worse!

Yeah, the trailer was very good. One big thing I don;t like are the Na'vi. But they may grow on me.
That IS pretty wild, actually. Can Microsoft sue for font infringement?
The subtitles in the movie are that font too.

I'm not sure in this case, but I doubt it. As far as I'm aware, a font like Papyrus is free use, so messing around with it to change it (which is obviously what's been done here) is probably perfectly legal.

did you guys see newsweek's cover?
I mean, if you look closely there, you can see where the notches on both fonts match up.

This is incredibly nerdy and pointless, so I'm going to stop now.

i do not think its nerdy... (welll, maybe it is but it is interesting) i am suprised they'd just take an off the shelf font like that for their giant-biggest movie ever made
post #27 of 37
Depending on the font, they have different licensing/restrictions. Once you buy the font you're typically licensed to use it how you see fit. And Microsoft didn't actually make the font anyway (see the Papyrus Wikipedia entry).

Logos and things are often made up of known font types (look at Crate and Barrel whose logo is just Helvetica or GameStop uses Impact) and it's completely legit. Designing a font that looks very similar to another font is actually cool as well and is even more common in logos since companies want their names to look CLOSE to a known font but just different enough to stand out.

When will Zapf Dingbats get their due?

Demo's out.
I'll probably try it just for kicks. To see if my old pc could even handle it.

I liked the bit where you could outrun Gargamel...

Well, I gave it a try. It plays exactly like Lost Planet with some light RPG elements tossed in. Luckily, you're spared the opportunity to see any gross blue aliens up close.
I downloaded the demo and extracted it ... still haven't installed it yet.
It's actually kinda fun. But, mostly forgettable.

There's no way that the Na'vi should stand a chance against the space marines though.
I'm sure they're going to pull some JRPG style "The lifeforce of Pandora" stupid deus ex machina in the end.
