FEVER RAY- Scandinavian shaman voodoo electro

Yes, I'm essentially posting a string of recommendations from a festival I just went to. After all, Chud is about sharing the goods, no?

USA & Canada might not be in the know of a band called The Knife, they're a pretty big deal over in Europe. That one was always a little too sterile for me, but their singer has released a solo project called FEVER RAY, and it might be the best thing I'll hear this year. It combines a nordic magic-realist feel with African tribal rhythms and trippy electronics, it's just great. Just check the very David Lynchian video for her single 'When I Grow Up' to determine if it's for you:

And another one:

If that doesn't creep you out in a good way, I don't know what to tell you.
She'll do a small tour in the US and Canada coming fall. Don't know if those are big venues, but if you like the music you can't afford to miss. Trippiest stage show I've seen since maybe Tricky in his prime:

That doesn't show off the great laser work, but you get the drift.

I bought the Fever Ray album a couple months ago. It's a great album, but it really sounds like an evolution of The Knife. It's still creepy and has alternating vocals at points. However, I would say it is more accessible than The Knife's releases (even "Silent Shout").

It's definitely worth a listen if you enjoy electronica that is unique and original.

Everytime "When I Grow Up" comes on my ipod I think "weird, don't remember uploading any Bjork". It's an amazing tune, though.

Good album. I don't if it's better than Silent Shout, but still, great effort. I really wonder if she's worth seeing live.

(Oddly enough, was gonna put that one your CD, Tournel...)

Aha! Well if it still flows in the mix, I won't mind that at all Savage. I see FR will be in Montréal too, so you'll get a chance to find out. I liked the album before seeing the gig, but that whole shaman voodoo thing going on onstage really adds to my appreciaton now. Shines a new light on the music, so to speak.

I think "Silent Shout" is a better album, but I think "Fever Ray" might be more accessible to people that might not appreciate the harsh coldness and nightmarish qualities of The Knife's music.

My only gripe with the Fever Ray disc is that the best songs were lumped together in the middle of the album.

I haven't heard the whole FR album, but they play her OFTEN on XMU43, so I've heard a few singles. I have Silent Shout, and dig that, so I'll probably get the FR album at some point, or go see her should she hit Atlanta.

Just checked site. Of course she's not hitting Atlanta. Oh well.

Man The Knife were one of my favourite bands of the 00s, will have to look into this solo work although to be honest the thing I always liked about them was how glacial they were.
