Is Tony Jaa *actually* a dark sorcerer? ONG BAK 2 Rumors

We all read the stories and heard the rumors. (for those who did not, Tony Jaa is reported to have fled the set of ong bak 2 for the darkest heart of the jungle, where he lived in solitude practicing black magic before finally returning to civilization and a tearful apology on day time Thai TV).

I will not pretend here that I did not WANT the rumors to be true. The very idea is simultaneously hilarious and awe inspiring. What if one of the greatest athletes and martial artists alive on earth today was in fact capable of super natural feats? What if he left it all behind, ran away from the sequel to the break out film that made him an international star so that he could practice magic in the middle of the jungle?

I cannot imagine anything cooler, and its a great story to tell about Tony Jaa when I talk about him.

However, I cannot necessarily accept this on faith, no matter how much I'd like to(something I always belittle Christians for doing when they buy into bronze age dogma). There has certainly been no Alan Moore style scientific documentation of this incident, or of Jaa's supposed abilities and powers.

If this were an American Film, I'd dismiss this out of hand as clever viral marketing, or a very meta way to hype a film. What makes me wonder if there is more truth to the stories though is that:

1) this is Thailand, where it seems less likely they'd have access to the advertising know how to virally market a film
2) SOMETHING strange clearly went down on the Ong Bak 2 production. From what I've been able to gather , production DID shut down. Jaa DID make a tearful apology after months of disappearance.

The specifics of what lead to the shut down, and Jaa's increasingly unhinged behavior are far from known.

I post this thread simply to ask if anyone out there has any CONFIRMED information , or anything that has been backed up by a reliable source. Is this a genuine example of an 'X File' of some sort, or a surprisingly sophisticated marketing technique for a country with a rather primitive film industry? Or something else entirely?

Edit: I use the word "sorcerer" only because I do not have a better term to describe what it is Jaa has been accused of being. As far as I know, someone who is a practitioner of magic is a sorcerer. Now, I know that not all magic is of the 'King Arthur' variety and that whatever forces Jaa possibly became involved with are probably something I cannot begin to understand. I do not know what sort of magic is practiced in Thailand, or where they believe the magic forces with which they deal are derived from (be it animal spirits, a general magical 'force' found in the natural world, or what have you), or what they call those who involve themselves in the practice of magic. So, I've used the word sorcerer, but if there is a more accurate descriptor out there , I'd prefer to use that because as it stands it sounds like I am saying Jaa would be at home with Merlin or something.

What the fuck?

I'll bite. In may 2008 Sahamongkol Film took over budget and management for Ong bak 2 from tony jaa. Following this takeover, no more cash was released for the film. This probably pissed off Jaa, who left the production, off to parts unknown, . He probably went off to take a break from filming as it is reported that this film's shooting schedule was long and costly, which had taken its toll on Jaa.

After his disappearance, his old mentor Panna Rittikrai was brought in to help finish the film, while Jaa was on his "sabbatical." Afterward, Jaa came back after bargaining with the studio.

There are you happy now? Christ...

That is good info, thank you for looking that up. Specifically I'd like to find out about the "parts unknown" aspect of the story. I believe devin faraci published an article about a year ago on all this, and it talked about the fact people were saying when he left for "parts unknown", he was doing so to practice magic. i since have seen this referenced in a few other places (do a google for "tony jaa black magic" and just see how many results you get, all about the incident during ong bak 2 production)

Youre right though, i think budget played a big role in this, as I too had heard whispers about it being over budget and the control of the budget being perhaps taken away from Mr Jaa

"Jaa’s absence sparked rumours he’s obsessed with black magic and had been “exhibiting strange behaviour on the set”. He is reported to dress as a shaman and meditates while cast and crew are ready to shoot. He has suddenly cancelled shooting for days.
"

a quotation from an article i just skimmed over. the quote seems to suggest the stuff about magic was being talked about even BEFORE he fled the set

I believe he took a trip to Bali to battle the Leyak. I could be wrong. I hope not though, because I just pictured Jaa dropping an elbow down on a floating fetus-sucking witch head and then dropping kicking it.

And that's awesome.

I believe Hellboy is taking care of that.

Jaa was probably aware that control of the movie was going to be taken away from him. So he likely began to rely on superstition to ward off those who might try to harm his film making endeavour.

As to what he was doing, i have heard that for some time he was in bangkok
, fleeing suited men with glasses supposedly from the studio, who were trying to bring him back to the production.

Holy S... that is both devious and incredibly cool. Creating a myth of your own god like abilities as to make your enemies cower and dare not oppose you. David O Russell should try that next time before he moves straight to screaming.

His private life seems like the plot of one of his films. Given what you said, it almost seems not out of place to say he spent the unaccounted for time searching for his missing elephant.

With all that said though, sadly there are still no confirmable facts (unless some of what you said is sourced) regarding Tony Jaa's 'missing time'. All second and third hand rumors reported in the press. This fascinates me, i want the real story though i know its possible the whole truth may never be fully known.

Its all in there. Jaa went broke filming this movie. Denies on Live TV practicing Black Magic while in retreat. Reports of him using spells on set likely bogus or his ancient Thai/Buddhist rituals were mis-represented. Sad.

You're welcome.

Thank you! Quite interesting indeed , I'll read those over. I guess what i was hoping to find was some information of an official variety, either from pankaj (is that the producers name) or some one else in a position of athority to comment on the rumors. Just vauge remarks about people from "the family" (what is this, C street?) denying the magic buisness. does it seem strange to you they cannot find one single person to stand up and give an actual quote about the black magic accusations?

With regards to the money issues, thats horrible. how could the studio do that to him? We joke about how the life of a thai stuntman is disposable (when talking about the crazy hits seen in ong bak etc) but clearly the studio feels that way for real. Tony Jaa is STAR. why on earth is he paying people out of his own pocket till his electricity is cut off?

The Executive Producer good enough for you? He's in there.

Well, thats a good point. I guess I just feel like when Tony or those guys deny it they have a stake in disproving it, so i take what they say with a grain of salt

Holy. Shit. I see the photos and I still can't believe that movie is real.. a floating head (with entrails) punches a nurse out the window and then eats the baby out of a pregnant lady?

Wheres the Crypto Compendium on this monstrosity?!

The movie isn't as good as you want it to be Trejo, but it's worth seeing once for sure. I Netflixed it myself.
