Lucasarts Gets Steamed

Lucasarts was kind enough to provide review codes for their Steam titles, so I'm playing through them all again to see how they hold up and maybe crack an egg of knowledge or two.

Check it out and let me know what you guys think! Very open to suggestions/criticisms, as always.

First installment's up with Loom. Just as great as I remembered, probably enjoyed it even more as an adult, in fact!

I'll be curious to see how the new wave of unwashed masses relate to these most treasured, and perhaps more effort intensive, video games.

Goddamn did I love Loom as a kid. I spent a summer on an intense of regiment of Loom and the first three King's Quest games. I remember having to buy the damn strategy guide that required you to have the red plastic viewfinder in order to read the answers.

LOOM is one of my favorites. Logical and satisfying puzzles, and a cool world to explore. The ending pretty much blew my mind. Really, my only problem with the game is that it's too short.

I really wish the game sold a ridiculous amount of copies over Steam and people showed enough interest to get people to fund the rest of the trilogy. It's such a unique game.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade- http://chud.com/articles/articles/20...TER/Page1.html

First time I played through this, actually. Was pleased that the puzzles are all based on parts of the movie but are different enough that it's actually tricky, but some of them are pretty insane.
The insane difficulty level kind of ruins this one for me, the number pad control system for the game-ruining fight bits make it almost impossible to play on a laptop. It's unfortunate because the actual game is quite decent, with a lot of piss-takey humour towards the end especially.

Incidentally this idea that Temple of Doom is clearly superior to Last Crusade is one of the most persistent movie geek fallacies, but that's a debate for another time and place.
I actually have a copy of the Last Crusade game with the card board box and 3D glasses in my room right now. I was given it as a gift when I was small, but having grown up with Macs I could never play it

Last Crusade was brutal. I actually replayed it several times to try to get all the points ... wow, I had a lot of free time once upon a time. Using the grail diary to figure out which cup was correct (yes, it changed each playthrough) was friggin' awesome.

Highlights:

1.)Figuring out on the second or third playthrough that it was possible to skip the blimp stage if you could start the biplane quickly enough;

2.)"Beyond this point, thou shalt not be saved!"

3.)Trying all the ways you could screw up the ending. Whip the cup to your hand then have a crack open under you, fall off the ledge, etc.

4.)"Would you like to buy this fine leather jacket?" ... or later ... "I'm selling these fine leather jackets."

5.)The censored box around Indy whenever he switches outfits.

The leather jacket line really cracked me up.

You're more hardcore than I am, sir. I can't bring myself to play through it again, I don't think. Also, I really find it difficult to play any adventure games that let you die these days. It's just such a cheap low blow for such a slow and methodical kind of game.

I'm definitely not of the mind that Last Crusade ruined the series or anything, I really enjoy it a lot. But it's easily the weakest of the original trilogy, and Fate of Atlantis is just so friggin' amazing, so...

Incidentally, I just realized that the Steam version of Fate of Atlantis is the talkie version, which I've never played before. Really excited.

NEVER PLAYED THAT EITHER! COMING TO XBOX LIVE!?!

Yeah, I actually played Last Crusade after Fate of Atlantis --which was friggin' awesome, and yes I beat it on all three methods-- and the Secret of Monkey Island games. It was a bit more ... hard core. For a game you'd think would appeal largely to kids and teens, it was brutally difficult. Hell, for some portions, if you hadn't taken handwritten notes earlier you were screwed.

**I think I played through it three times, and ended up with Indy points in the 700s. I remember the only way I could give up my quest was concluding that getting all of the points was impossible.

Doubt it's coming to Xbox Live anytime soon, although if you buy that new (and apparently shitty) Indiana Jones Wii game it comes with Fate for free. Definitely love to have all of these on the 360, though.

But why can't you just get it on PC? It's not like it's going to take much of a system to play it on. Although it would be really nice to play this one on the couch.

I have not had much success with dosbox shenanigans, and the windows capable version (last time I checked...which was years ago) was a semi-collector's item going for close to 100 bucks.

Download Steam, Overlord! Have you not been paying attention? 5 bucks gets you a version that works just fine with XP or Vista.

Steam frightens me. Also, the only thing that will get me gaming on the PC again is KOTOR:MMORPG.
I never played 'Last Crusade', but I played the hell out of 'Fate of Atlantis'. That's still one of the most satisfying movie tie-in games that I've ever played.

I have the Fate Of Atlantis poster on the wall of my room at my moms house, but never played the game.

Secret of Monkey Island's half off right now- http://store.steampowered.com/app/32360/
post #22 of 33
Is Jedi Academy any good?
It's not bad. A little unfairly maligned, but it WAS a big step down after Jedi Knight II.
Was that Jedi Outcast?
Can't remember them right now, but Outcast was the best one.
Jedi Knight II was Jedi Outcast, yeah.
I remember Outcast being pretty good. At least the powers worked. I bought Unleashed during the $10 sale, and it kind of blows. What the fuck is the point of upgrading my powers if ALL OF THE GODDAMN TROOPERS ARE IN FORCE-PROOF EGGS
post #27 of 33
Hey Y(od)a was Jedi Outkast.

Wokka wokka wokka.

Sounds like this might make a good MCP article!

Just to make sure I understand it though, it goes:

Dark Forces
Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II
Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy

What a horrible numbering/titling scheme.

...And bought! (along with the Jedi Knight/Dark Forces pakc), despite owning about 2 of the games included, since I still own my "LucasArts Archives" versions.
Never played "Loom" before...I'm in for a real treat, right?

PS: Okay, Lucasarts, now when are we going to get the X-wing/Tie-Fighter saga in a pack? Seriously, dont you dare release a "Rebel assault" pack before it.

You're gonna love Loom. If you prefer though, check out the FM-Towns version as listed in my review- it's a better version of the game, albeit without the voice acting.

Gonna get some more of these articles up this week if all goes well.

You forgot the "Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II: Mysteries of the Sith" expansion pack.
Never actually played that one...

I'll try and get my hands on it, Alex...I suppose internet download is the way to go? (I mean, I've already payed for Loom, so I shouldnt feel bad, right?....right?)
