CHUD Album of the Month

Thread Starter
Inspired by the 'Doomed from the Start: CHUD Film of the Month' thread currently in progress.

Would there be any interest in doing a monthly thread whereby different Chewers could select two albums for everyone to obtain, listen to, and discuss?
I'd be up for this, but I know from previous musical conversation that a) my knowledge is scant conpared to many on here and b) you all seem to like some hard rock a lot more than me.

However, I'm always on the hunt for good music.

My feelings exactly. This could be alot of fun.
I don't know how much I'd be able to contribute (discussing music isn't my strongest suit), but I'd certainly check out the threads for possible listening options.
Totally up for this

I feel the same as Richard.

Also, care should be taken to pick music that is readily available on any of the legal downloading sites out there. How you actually obtain the music is your affair, but we really shouldn't advocate anything questionable.
Yeah, I'm willing to give it a shot, particularly with your caveat about being "readily available" ("obtain"... heh heh heh). Since I stream Rhapsody here at work, it's pretty easy for me to give a listen to a lot of new stuff, and this way I might actually get pointed towards more of it.
I'd be in. How would you be doing the album selection process?

If there is enough interest (and you guys seem to indicate that there IS enough), I'd probably pick someone to go first. That person would then select 2 albums (and a theme if applicable) and start a thread that would manage the discussion for them. Around the 20th of the month, the Selector would come back to this thread and announce who the next selector is, starting the cycle anew.
One way to get around the "readily available" issue is to use Lala. The first listen to any album is free.

I'd give this a shot.
I'd be totally up for it. Always keen to discover music I'm not familiar with.
Yes we can!
I'll be up for it. I'm somewhat financially limited so I'll be keen to try Lala or other legal avenues.
Spotify is probably going to make this a lot easier. It allows you to stream music from a whole ton of albums.
spinner.com (which I thought had died years ago) also lets you stream about a dozen or so complete new album releases for free.
Sign me up.
Of course.

Rhapsody is where I do the majority of my legal "first" listens. One of the best subscriptions I've ever been involved in.
Brilliant idea Judas, I'm definitely in.
Totally up for this.

As an aside, would these be newer albums, classic albums, diamonds in the rough, all of the above? The movie version of this seems to be a nice mixture, so I'm assuming this would be the same.
It would be up to the selector. It could be anything.
I'll have to do the free listening options, but I'm definitely in.
Fantastic idea. I'm in.
Why are there more people interested in an Album of the Month than the Movie of the Month?

I'm not very interested in Kelly's Heroes or The Americanization of Emily. I have limited time to watch movies anyway. Most albums, on the other hand, will be a little more accessible for me.

The genre is up to you. I'd like to see a nice representation of all music in here as this thread progresses.

The Rules - The album must:
1. be a standalone album by the artist/group, not be a GREATEST HITS or similar type of compilation.
2. be an album of music; no spoken word or similar.
3. be readily available by legal channels.

Additional rules may be added via the consensus of the thread contributors.
This is a great idea. I'm ready to listen and discuss. Bad ass.

In.

Well, since I started the thread, I hope that you'll all allow me the privilege of making the first album selections for September.

I was born in 1970. I grew up listening to the music of my two older brothers (Led Zep, Aerosmith, and Deep Purple were all in constant rotation), so most of my early musical taste falls within the 'classic rock' vein. As I grew older, I also got into heavy metal (Iron Maiden and Metallica) and progressive rock (Yes and early Rush), but I always ended up going back to that 70s rock that has stood the test of time.

I want to introduce (or re-introduce) two essential albums from the 70s that alot of you have probably never heard in their entirety. After thinking on it for most of the night, I've opted for the following two albums:

1. Rainbow - 'Rising' (1976)

2. Supertramp - 'Breakfast in America' (1979)

I hope that you will enjoy them both. Front to back, these two albums are fantastic (you older guys should already know this). The reviews really speak for themselves. I'll start the thread for it now.
See, this is what I was looking for! Two albums I've heard of but never really listened to. Genius. I'll be listening/discussing ASAP.
There's a fair bit of Rainbow on YouTube for the povo chewers like me.

It's pretty fucking awesome.
Hell fucking yes. Count me in.

Also, are we allowed to nominate live albums, they're not technically greatest hits but they do contain an overall selection of songs.
Oh, I'm all about some Breakfast in America. Played that thing to death. And I'm familiar with some Rainbow singles but have never heard an entire album.
Spotify is your best firend for something like this, that's where I'm heading when I get home to listen to Judas' picks.

I don't know, what do you guys think on live albums? I'm tempted to exclude them as they ARE, essentially, greatest hits compilations. However, some of the live albums out there are pretty much the definitive albums from the artist in question ('Frampton Comes Alive' comes to mind). Should live albums be allowed on a case-by-case basis?
I'd say go case-by-case. I'd hate to toss out stuff like Cash's prison albums with a "no live albums" rule.
I don't think anyone would suggest live albums when they're just greatest hits affairs, anyway - there's a lot of amazing music that's only been recorded live and I think you should be able to include it.

I'm so in this.

Nice work fish-man!

Can't wait to expose my fellow Chewers to Live's Throwing Copper!

Comments in my RISING/BREAKFAST IN AMERICA thread have indicated that people don't want to wait a full month to make their album selections. Considering how quickly people are listening to and commenting on my two albums, I'm inclined to agree that a month is too long of a timespan for each selection.

A proposal: Let's shorten the timespan to TWO WEEKS or until the conversation totally peters out in the current thread.

Thoughts?
Two albums in two weeks is a totally respectable turn around. Sounds good to me.
Yeah, I'm all for that too. Just listening to Rainbow now, hope to have some comments up this weekend.

Darn it. My internet sarcasm meter must be broken. I can't figure out if you're joking or not.

I've selected Jeb to be our next presenter. Let 'em fly on Labor Day Weekend (or earlier if discussion has totally died out on my thread).
OK. If everyone's up for it, I'll plan to put the two new albums up on Friday, September 4th.

Everyone good with that?
Looking forward to it Jeb.
Bring it on Jeb!

And HBarr, yes I was joking.

(Seriously, you doubted me?)

Would an All Covers album be acceptable Judas?
The only single band covers album that I think is a solid album is Rebuilding the Wall by Luther Wright and the Wrongs. Every other one I've heard has some serious missteps.

I can think of a few...
