Take Another Trip Into THE DESCENT With This Trailer

Is it just me, or did the caves get much, much brighter since the last time?

Although they could be fixing that in post, I guess.

Looks like fun.

So, does this mean it's a sequel to the American ending, not the original ending?
Let me begin by saying I really enjoyed the descent. Some moments, especially the 'Squeeze' sequence had me nearly breathless with my claustrophobia. That is a horror film, as far as I am concerned. The concept of people getting cut off in an cave and evolving to that enviroment is also a cool one. It turned out to be one of my favorite horror films of all time. With that said, I am disappointed to see they went with the american ending. I also find it strange to think Shauna would EVER go back in that cave for any reason. If I were her I'd be happy to wait in jail while the police go and attempt to retreive the bodies. I'd know that evidence like teeth marks from the bites would prove my side of the story. Why would I feel the need to PERSONALLY re enter the worst cave system in the world? Another aspect i liked about the first film was the all female cast. Plenty of films have done that, but the movie did not feel the need to sex it up. It was a movie that just HAPPENED to star women, which i thought was great.

Yep. The lesser ending, to be sure. But I'm assuming that they really wanted to get the final girl back and that was the only way they could go about it.

LOL, well my point is that there was no gratuitous lesbianism, or nudity, or overt sexualizing of the characters. they were all just people, not sex objects

Does look like more of the same.

I'd like a whole eco-system of cave critters, but I'm not that picky. It's got my 2 hours.

Was that Pete Cullen narrating the trailer?

I really never felt that this movie (with either ending) needed a sequel. That said I'd have given this a fair chance if the plot wasn't so damn contrived. I can't accept that there is any way that girl would go back in those caves for any reason, and I doubt anyone would try to force her to under the circumstances (whether they believed her version of the story or not). I think I'll be happy enough to let the original stand on it's own, and skip this. The trailer isn't doing it any favours either - it doesn't seem to be doing anything new or interesting with the material.

I like THE DESCENT a lot, but I don't possibly see how you can make a sequel without it seeming like just more of the same. Caves are caves.

They could have at least had the monsters show up at some catacombs, or in the sewers or something.

She runs off to tell the local authorities about the creatures inside the caves and what happened to her friends but they don't believe her. The Sheriff makes her go back down to the caves with a group of rescuers to find out what happened, and they soon end up trapped inside by falling rocks and forced deeper inside.
Horror sequel cliche #74: the authorities don't believe the hero, and go to investigate anyway, dragging the hero along. Yawn. Do people who write horror movies intentionally try to avoid originality?

Anyway, I'm not sure how they're going to drum up any tension around these creatures now, considering how handily they got their asses handed to them by the last group of spelunkers that went down there. They're kind of pathetic at this point.

They'll be wearing magic rings that make them INVISIBLE!

This unfortunately reeks of a straight to DVD release. The Decent was a one off corker of a suspenseful film. It didn't need a sequel.

This looks like rubbish. The original ending is a big part of what made the first one memorable, in my opinion. It's so horribly bleak and sad. The all female cast was at least something different from most horror movies. The monsters themselves where the least interesting part.
I feel no need to see this at all.
So, the plot is essentially 'Aliens'?
It's exactly Aliens. Lame. I love the original, so I will probably steer clear of this retread. If Marshall was directing, I'd chance it, but not with some no-name.
ALIENS has officially become the lazy go-to template for horror sequels.
It wasn't even an original idea when Aliens did it.

I'm sure this will be no grand piece of filmmaking, and the original will defnitely leave it in the dust every way from Sunday. But I'll probably rent the DVD or see it on On Demand, if for no other reason than the kills will probably be pretty good.

I suppose that will be what it's all about, creative kills. We'll have to wait and see huh.

I saw it at Fright Fest and I actually liked it quite a bit. It stands up well as a feature film on its own (And in the Q and A afterwards the lead actress joked (?) that it was "Probably better than Neil's effort". Man, people REALLY don't like him).

Fared better than Giallo at any rate. John Landis walked out after 10 minutes.

I'm curious what this is all about.

As my friend put it. "He's a cunt!".

John Landis happily stands around and chats with people and seems to be having a great time. The times that Neil Marshall has been there he's just given people shit. I saw him and wanted to go over and tell him how much I liked 'Doomsday' but someone got there before me. A very polite young gent said "I'm sorry to bother you" and Marshall just snapped back "Well don't!" and walked off.

I just thought he was in a bad mood until I heard similar stories from other people over the years. It's a shame too because he seems really likeable in interviews and such.

I've heard a few reports from Fright Fest that it was good. OK, good enough for me, I'll see it.

Not to derail the thread but what else did you like from the fest? Maybe post in the HORROR RECOMMENDATIONS/WARNINGS thread with thoughts on what you liked and didn't?
Why is it taking so long to release this?
Considering its a Lionsgate genre film, I expect it to be dumped on DVD next year.

If he did that to me personally I might have a hard time liking his work in the future. But as long as he is not a jerk to ME, but to other people, I can still enjoy Doomsday.

Chris O'Donnell was once really really awful to me and I now cannot enjoy him no matter the role.

So I can see how if Neil offended someone personally it might be hard to be a fan, but as long as you've never met the man, why does it matter?
I don't see why it matters even if it did happen to you personally. Artists have no responsibility to be nice people. Appreciate their art or don't. Being a jerk is no reflection on that.
No I agree, and it certainly doesn't stop me enjoying what's been put up on screen. There's lots of actors/writers/directors that we know are unsavory people in real life, but if the works good then the work is good.

I guess it's just incredibly jarring to see in person. Particularly when you have a legend like Landis who was all to happy to joke and chat with people. Even if Landis hated it he didn't let on, plus it seemed a little wrong to be at an event specifically to socialize and then blast someone who just wanted to say they liked your work.
