Points Cards

I'm more or less just curious if anyone uses points cards and what ones you have? And what benefits they give you? It seems almost every store/company out there has points cards or some variation there of. So do you take advantage of this stuff or do you hate them?

I have four.

Best Buy Reward Zone - 1 point for every dollar spent in the store or bestbuy.ca. Get 400 points you get a $5 RZ certificate. I use the RZ Visa so I get double points on instore/online purchases and one point for every dollar spent elsewhere.

Esso Extra -1 point for every dollar spent at an Esso gas station. I get double points since I use mid-grade gas.

SCENE Card- I get points when I purchase movie tickets and I get 10% off concession stand items. I guess when you get 1,000 points you can get a free movie ticket or food.

Running Room Card - I get points for purchases at the store. I'm not sure of the "bonuses" since I don't shop there often. So really I don't use this one much.

I used the Air Miles Card and Aeroplan cards for a few months but I rarely ever shopped at the stores you get the points from. So I stopped. I can get Aeroplan Miles at Esso but not enough to make it worth it. I get more Esso Extra points and I pretty much just use them for free car washes.

I use the best Buy one because they ask at every check out (or else I would forget) and I keep getting $ 5 dollar off cards which isn't bad. I also use my Albertson's card (grocery store), as it gets me the sale items at sale price (the most annoying thing about grocery cards ever) and it knocks down the price of gas at their pumps (making it cheaper than any of th other options).

Kroger, but that's only because I save money at checkout when I use it.

I travel for work, so I'm a member of pretty much every frequent flier program and hotel points plan. I also get points on the Amex I use to pay for all that travel, which is nice.

Personally, I use the Best Buy one, and one for Regal theaters in addition to the grocery store ones. Most of them don't have my real info, since I mostly find the things to be a pain in the ass. But I'm a cheap bastard so I won't pass up the discounts.

Krogers and Speedway.

Krogers is great because of the free coupons they send us monthly and also the in-store savings. I'm close to getting a $100 gas card at Speedway so that will be nice for the winter season.

My bank debit card has a points system so I pay for everything on that. But aside from that, I have a Duane Reade card and get a $5 coupon for every 100 points and a Victoria Secrets card (yea for free panties!). Had a Regal and AMC card, but I don't go to the theater all that much any more.

For every thousand points I get on my Target card, I get a 10% off coupon. It's not a lot, but it's still something. Don't have any other cards, because I don't frequent places like Best Buy a whole lot.

I get free concert tickets and retail gift cards all the time from my Amex rewards points.

I really need to apply for an American Express.

The Best Buy reward zone is great, and has only improved with the Gamer Club addition. A few times a month I get an email telling me I have a $10-$20 certificate. Free money is good.

Wait, whats this Gamer Club thing you speak of at Best Buy? I assume it's new and obviously only in U.S. best Buys at the moment. What does it consist of?

I think it's pretty new. I was asked if I wanted to join at the beginning of the summer. Basically it's Reward Zone, but if you buy video game related items (consoles, games, accessories) you get double the RZ points, and double the cash back. Since I buy pretty much all of my games from Best Buy I get a lot of free cash, which I then use for games and get more free money from the free money. Insert Xibit picture.

I should bring this up. I'm going to ask about it on the company message board. Though if the U.S. stores just launched it chances are we'll launch it sometime within the next year since all of our stores are supposed to have a complete re-launch of the gaming departments.

I've had a Boots Advantage Card for a little over a year (I got it when I worked there) which has got me a lot of free stuff. Boots only exists over here in the UK though (and a few airports, I think, but they're not international) so it wouldn't be much use to most of you, but it's the best that I know of. You get 4p back in points for every £1 that you spend, and the store sells stuff that I buy a LOT of (makeup, perfume, skincare, chocolate and crisps, toothbrushes, etc) so I quite often end up with about £20 worth of points on my card.

I recently got the HMV points card, but haven't had a chance to really see what I can do with it yet. I know with that you can't use the points like regular money, it's for getting special exclusives (like concert tickets & signed merchandise) so I'll see how that goes.
