Saturday Night Live Season 35. - Page 3

Ratty, the show stole your Marge Simpson joke!
That fat white kid is worse then Goodburger.

More Forte then usual, which is a great thing.
Well what I saw of that was definitely the best episode in a while. Sounds like I'll have to check out the rest of it online.

Nope. That was Black Dahlia's, I believe.

So he's done that character before? The handful of times I've watched post-Ferrell SNL, never found him funny. But that stuff about his bayonets and how only the purebloods deserve healthcare, all of that killed me.

I think this is his fourth appearance. There was a funeral skit and a wedding dinner skit, possibly something else.
The wedding one had Hugh Laurie. It was really funny.
Tracy Morgan wrote a book. Apparently Cheri Oteri and Chris Kattan were both assholes:

”Where’s Chris Kattan now? Where’s Cheri Oteri now? That bitch can’t even get arrested.”
So Budweiser is sponsoring the show tonight? "The Rock" Obama sketch was poop.
Bill Hader made that skit amazing.
Good work, SNL. Another year or two and that Beauty & the Beast sketch might have seemed dated. Way to strike while the iron is hot.
Hader is the show's MVP. And every show can use Shakira shaking her ass in it.
That dress rehearsal with Fallon and Ferrel at the clothing store didn't happen much different than the one that aired.
Wacky voices.
Is it wrong that I thought the BET sketch was funny (even if it really was just them throwing every thing they could think of against the wall)?
Pretty dreadful show, although "Daveheart" had a couple chuckles. Kind of sad when outtakes from 10 years ago outshines anything on the current show.
You know what this show needs? A couple more girls in the cast so that Kristen Wiig doesn't have to do everything. Oh wait.

I thought this was the best bit last night.
I only watch this show two or three times a season. Is Hader still painfully underutilized?

Nathan Rabin, in his review of this last episode:

Kenan Thompson has proven a controversial figure on this site. Some writers and commenters think he sucks. Others have postulated that he is the living embodiment of suck, suck in human form as it were. I used to find him mildly amusing and inoffensive. Now when I cringe when I see him starring in a sketch. It generally means the sketch will be

1. Ambiguously racist

2. Brutally unfunny
How true. Is it just me, or is he getting more and more screen time?
Last night was pretty brutal. And I'm starting to get sick of Wiig. I mean she's the same basic carachter in every sketch.

This has been going on for a while. She always plays a psycho/irritating person with annoying and repetitive ticks. The Target lady, the lady who one ups everyone, Gilly...I hate all of them. She used to be somewhat refreshing when Amy Poehler was the lone female player in every skit, but now that she's replaced Poehler for that title it's beyond horrible.

SNL has a large and diverse cast, that is fairly talented. I don't understand why Lorne and the writers have to continue this trend.

I think every cast member on a sketch comedy is contractually required to create a character like this.

Honestly, that was the only skit I really laughed out loud at - that, and the old footage of Chris Rock cracking up at Tim Meadows during the "Perspectives" skit - but then again, I always loved the "Perspectives" skits.

Honestly, the past two weeks in a row, I've fallen fast asleep during "Weekend Update" - and there hasn't been a lot to hold my interest before "Update" either.

Place your bets now: When Swift hosts in 2 wks., do they get Kanye West to show up to spoof the MTV Awards "controversy"?
I tried watching this last night. Wow. Not even the all stars could produce a chuckle.

I'm all for James Franco showing up for no good reason, but sheesh. Does Andy Samberg actually appear in any skits anymore?

Hader deserves to be, and i feel like he's starting to be able to shine just a little bit more so far this season. my point is that while Kenan sucks, i find it to be an ineffectual badness. At the very least you can watch one of his sketches and make fun of how bad it is. Kristen Wiig, on the other hand is aggressively bad. can't stand those fucking characters, and they are a rape on sketch form. and the ironic thing is she's the best actor on the show. It's just that her sense of humor sucks. it's not good>bad between the two, just degrees of yuck.

Another unpopular opinion: I guarantee that Bobby Moynihan is one of the 3-4 funniest people on that show. unfortunately he's a 'fat guy' so you're never gonna see his chops.
I mainly know Wiig and Hader from their film work, at this point. I don't want to be one of those guys, but I try to watch SNL at least once every season and it doesn't go well.

I dig Will Forte, love Samberg in HOT ROD, but I've yet to find anything (that I've seen) Thompson does as funny.

I don't wish a pox on the guy or anything. The show wouldn't get any funnier because he suddenly left. I will continue to not watch and therefore not be affected by the lack of funny.

For some reason geeks hate to see talented women dominate the show! Goes back to Gilda I suppose. Wiig is almost single handedly keeping SNL afloat. She IS funny. If anything, its the writing that lets her down.

Zero. You think Swift will want Kayne to take her spotlight on purpose now? The have a fat, black castmember to fill all the male and female African American roles.

I'm looking forward to Keenan's Kanye impression, which I'm assuming will be Keenan doing the exact same thing he always does, only while wearing sunglasses.

Of course. That's a no brainer given all the publicity. Nothing like beating a dead horse after the dust has settled.

Yup, that's true too. And you're right, it does go all the way back to Gilda, and it's continued. Not to say that there aren't any successful women from this show, but they have a far tougher time of it than the men.

Hey, come on man, Keenan did Good Burger. Good Burger, man, Good Burger.

Awful, awful sketch, but Sudeikis dancing in the background of the BET talk show made me laugh.

Maybe this is true for some male geek viewers, but I just don't think she has any range as a comedian. And as a long time fan of the show, there have been plenty of women cast members that have been better than Wiig.

Both Gilda Radner and Jane Curtain were great out of the original cast. Neither of them did the same routine over and over and over, only with a different wig and character name.
I won't mention most of the 80's cast, because both the males and females were nothing to brag about.
The 90's had plenty of outstanding female cast members, including Cheri Oteri, Ana Gasteyer, and Molly Shannon. And speaking of Molly Shannon...now she is someone that could actually play an irritating character (Superstar), and then go on to perform in a more subdued sketch that was just as funny (the Swetty Balls sketch).
And for the most recent cast, I believe both Amy Poehler and Michaela Watkins had more to bring to the table than Wiig.

I agree that some of the blame for the issues with Wiig could be due to the substandard writing that has been going on for the last couple of seasons. However, when Wiig plays irritating characters with repetitive ticks in movies as well, I don't think it's a stretch to state she does not have a lot of range as a comedian. For examples of this, I'd recommend watching her performances in "Knocked Up," "Ghost Town," and her deleted scenes in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall." Maybe she's getting typecast in SNL and in movies, but as an actress/comedian she could also seek roles that broaden her horizons. Even the crazy manchild Will Ferrell has starred in movies like "Stranger Than Fiction" and "Winter Passing."

Nice post.

However, I just want to point out you skipped over Jan Hooks. In my opinion, one of the great cast members of all time, male or female!

(Oh, and Denny Dillon!l)
Wiig's great. The show is certainly stuck in a rut, but they are lucky to have people like her and Hader on there trying hard to up the material.

That crazed look on his face was what got me.

Caught up on this episode only due to the increased activity in this thread. SNL has been on a decline but this was exceptionally bad. Did Gerard Butler do anything except play over the top characatures of himself? The writers basically thought just letting speak in his native tongue was enough to hold several sketches.

I've been hating on Wiig's annoying characters for years now. Glad other people are finally seeing the light. Annoying voice and/or tic does not equal funny! Cheri Oteri and Molly Shannon both had annoying characters, but there was an actual plot that would happen in the skit from which the annoying behavior could seem a natural extension of. They didnt just stand in a doorway repeating the same phrase over and over.

The BET sketch was all sorts of greatness. It actually looked like Keenan was singing; Sudekis doing the ReRun and Running Man in the background was amazingly funny; the complete randomness of Franco...I loved it. But then again, I'm a fan of the Bee Gees skit. I have a thing for singing talk show hosts, I guess.

The Rock Obama sketch was funny the first time around. Not so much anymore. Beauty and the beast? SNL always staying relevant. The Randy & Greg show, again, funny the first several times it aired. If they aren't going to do anything different, just reair the original.

It says something that they had to use up airtime by running outtakes from much funnier casts.

You people and your stark math comparisons.

Wiig = (Shannon/Oteri) * Dunn

Keenan = (Rocket - 10) /(Nealon - Cleghorne)

You're not alone - I love the Bee Gees skits. They're even funnier if the rumor is true that they really piss off Barry Gibb (from what I've heard, he got so mad after the first one that Fallon portrayed him as even more over-the-top in the second and third one).

Can anyone tell me why SNL doesn't even attempt to find a black male cast member that has some range? If anyone saw MadTV, they had a history of black male cast members that had all types of range from Orlando Jones, Phil Lamarr, Arie Spears, and later Keenan Michael Key and Jordan Peele. All were infinitely better than Keenan. I gues SNL just doesn't care enough, which is a shame since there are so many talented people out there.

Because Lorne Michaels is only concerned with having one token non-white featured player so he can brush off any charges of racism; he isn't particularly concerned whether the person is funny or not.

And it must be pretty bad when SNL can't even live up to MadTV standards.

So, four new shows, then repeats?

Lazy fuckers.
