Maybe this is true for some male geek viewers, but I just don't think she has any range as a comedian. And as a long time fan of the show, there have been plenty of women cast members that have been better than Wiig.
Both Gilda Radner and Jane Curtain were great out of the original cast. Neither of them did the same routine over and over and over, only with a different wig and character name.
I won't mention most of the 80's cast, because both the males and females were nothing to brag about.
The 90's had plenty of outstanding female cast members, including Cheri Oteri, Ana Gasteyer, and Molly Shannon. And speaking of Molly Shannon...now she is someone that could actually play an irritating character (Superstar), and then go on to perform in a more subdued sketch that was just as funny (the Swetty Balls sketch).
And for the most recent cast, I believe both Amy Poehler and Michaela Watkins had more to bring to the table than Wiig.
I agree that some of the blame for the issues with Wiig could be due to the substandard writing that has been going on for the last couple of seasons. However, when Wiig plays irritating characters with repetitive ticks in movies as well, I don't think it's a stretch to state she does not have a lot of range as a comedian. For examples of this, I'd recommend watching her performances in "Knocked Up," "Ghost Town," and her deleted scenes in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall." Maybe she's getting typecast in SNL and in movies, but as an actress/comedian she could also seek roles that broaden her horizons. Even the crazy manchild Will Ferrell has starred in movies like "Stranger Than Fiction" and "Winter Passing."
