Exactly. Diva is just offbase here.

Um, she is old. She's been living & breathing for over 88 years. That is considered old by anyone & everyone on the planet. That's not a knock against her, it's just a fact. It's the same as saying that Eddie Murphy is a black man or Clay Aiken is a homosexual man.

Who's denying her age? I'm not going to belittle Betty's accomplishment by saying she did great because she's an old lady who didn't fall on stage and misread cue cards. Old people work all the time. Joan Rivers who is in her late 70's is more active than ever. There's a reality show that's basically the "Jersey Shore" with elderly people partying it up and having sex. Dick Clark hosted a live New Years Eve show well into his twilight years. Many people live long and active lives, and many older actors continue to perform long hours on live TV. If there were some reason to think that Betty couldn't perform and then did, congratulations are in order. But she did great, and it had little to do with her age.

I'm getting the distinct impression that Diva is terrified of death.

Who in the world said this? Exaggerate much?

And good for them. No one has belittled Betty White, unless you think saying that she was inspiring is belittling someone. Your "ageist" suggestion was absurd, and since I'm confident (by some of the comments towards your argument) that most logical people see the difference, I'm not going to bother discussing this any further. I'm pretty sure most reasonable people would agree with me and that even Ms White herself wouldn't find being inspired by her to be "ageist". You've overreacted here, and given poor arguments to defend your position (which seems to be, being impressed and inspired by people who are able to do things that people half their age can't is a bad thing and prejudiced against the elderly). Whatever.

Betty White didn't want anyone making her look old.

Here's how old I am: What with all the former cast members popping up, I had my fingers crossed for Mary Gross, or possibly Jane Curtin.

I guess Cheri Oteri pissed off someone other than Tracy Morgan.

If this is what you actually wrote, this whole a discussion wouldn't have happened. Being able to do things better than others at any age is an accomplishment, but can be particularly so when one runs circles around people younger than oneself. But your posts come off as, "Look at how old she is! It's crazy that an old person can perform on SNL." And to this I call rubbish. There are lots of older people who perform on TV and do it well.

It only came across that way to YOU, as has been pointed out.

I wondered about that. Hope there wasn't anything negative keeping her away. Push comes to shove, I'd say she was funnier than all the rest. She was Amy Poehler before Amy Poehler.
I'm glad she wasn't there. I can't remember one carachter she did that I liked. I could have done without Molly Shannon as well.
I enjoyed Oteri, although it's bizarre how she's virtually disappeared since SNL. I know she had some projects lined up, but haven't heard anything since her father was murdered here in Nashville.

This episode reminded me a bit of the Star Trek remake - the writing was derivative and crappy, but there was so much energy and enthusiasm that people gave it a pass. Calling this "the best SNL in years" says much more about SNL than it does the quality of the episode.

White was fantastic, but everything was a retread, aside from the digital short and CSI: Sarasota (an idea so hacky it's weird to call it "original").
That digital short was brilliance.

I haven't laughed that hard at SNL in ages.

I'm not a Shannon fan but I always dug Oteri. She was pretty fearless in her silliness, almost like Martin Short. It's been so long, I don't remember the specifics but I think I liked that character she played who turned every conversation into a sexed-up double entendre. Not particularly groundbreaking but she made me laugh, and that's her job.

She was the receptionist where a good friend of mine worked right before she got hired on SNL, so I always wished her well. I hope her absence isn't because of something bad.

ETA: Here's the link to Oteri as the office slut. Not as funny as I remember but still has a few great moments. Oteri asking for "man milk" and anal sex must have been pretty risque back then.

Cheri Oteri played the tooth fairy on Imagination Movers this year and it was probably one of the best episodes of their season. You could tell the Movers were excited to be working with her... especially Mover Scott who always throws in SNL homages in each ep.
I recall Oteri was developing a TV show with JJ Abrams, but there were no follow-ups after her dad's death.
Oteri is like Wiig to me. Very funny generally, but she went for the most obnoxious characters ever on the show. The cheerleader and "Simmer Down Now" lady are seared in my brain. I can't think of anything she's done on SNL outside of those characters.
That funny, I agree about Oteri. But Wiig, I can recall her roles in movies, whether they be big or small better than most of her characters on SNL.
Oteri was hysterical in those "Good Morning Springfield" skits.

My modern fave female cast member was 1 season wonder Nancy Walls. Loved her recurring character the church bazaar bully. ("Don't make me open a six pack of whoop ass")
I used to love Oteri as Barbara Walters, especially in The View skits.

Yeah, I rarely could stand her. Very shrill and one note most of the time.

I don't think I've seen her in anything since the first Scary Movie.

Yes! She was good as Barbara.

Here's a list of her characters and impressions.

Ha! Apparently Cheri played Ross Perot in a few skits. I can see that being funny, but dang if I don't remember them.
Alec Baldwin it still a great SNL host. Coach Rooney was the best host sketch I have seen on this show in a long time.

"Now it's time for Most Improved Award. That goes to, my hatred for these children. I actually had that written on the plaque."
That was good, the digital short was OK and I liked the timecrowave. Everything else was just more of the same.

The best illustration of the crappyness was Wiig and Armison's look a like singers on update.
Any time the Digital Short isn't a rap number is OK with me.

Who else here gets an early-90s cast vibe from Pedrad's geek teenager?
The Timecrowave the best thing about the show. The digital short was okay. The rest was pure crap, including Update.

I'm not sure about early-90's, but it's one of those sketches that I find oddly endearing despite not really being very funny. Maybe it's just because I think Nasrim is a babe.

I think it is very funny. In fact, it's the best recurring sketch they've had in a while.

How was Petty as a musical guest?

Ha, did Robin Duke show up?

I'm not sure how much more it can recur, though, since both her parents are guest-hosts.

No, it was a strictly 90s reunion.

Thank christ for HULU. I can just watch the monologue and Timecrowave and go back to my business.
Timecrowave, Geek Teenager, and Digital Short was the only reason to tune in...Why did that horrible Starburst sketch open the show, it's the worst of what snl offers: one note sketch with wigg doing one of her goofy characters.
That's what's great about the geek teenager sketch -- it's another goofy character, but one of the few that is well-written.

Wiig's a game performer, but usually lacks that writing. So I think the Wiig is unfair, yet entirely understandable.
I thought it was an all-around solid episode, last night, except for the Wiig-centric bits. Timecrowave was great, but was I the only one who was even a little bit amused by Baldwin's energy in the sniper sketch?

No, his antic side-rolling was very funny. Unfortunately, he blew a cue and the punchline wasn't strong enough.
Very true.

I will never complain about another appearance by Stefan.

I also liked Abby's Sally Field bit... but that's partially because she's so damn cute.

The swim coach was definitely the highlight.

I have to agree.

Drew at Hitfix has a cool write-up on an anthology script based on Saturday Night Live that was never produced. There was alot of talent involved, would've been interesting:
