Plan 9 Remake

This is the first thread I've ever started, so go easy on me. Never mind, you guys won't anyway. =)



Some of you may remember last year that Brian King wrote an article about a small company called Darkstone Entertainment getting the rights to do a remake of Plan 9 From Outer Space. Director John Johnson had said that the movie would be released on September 9th this year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original.

Unfortunately, quite a number of obstacles got in the way, and the film wasn't able to make the release date. However, I was in West Virginia last month with Johnny and his crew where we filmed the teaser trailer for the film. The trailer goes live this Wednesday, on the date of the 50th anniversary.

Wouldn't it be fun if they somehow managed to make an awesomely good movie from the material. Making anything trying to be as silly as the original just wouldn't work IMHO.

Yeah, deliberately camping this up will not work at all. Part of the original's charm is that Wood really seems earnest in his approach to this turkey. Some folks I know loved on The Lost Skeleton of Cadavar (or whatever it was), but it just didn't work for me. Reform School Girls is another example of this approach. But that had Wendy O. Williams in it.

I've always felt that Night of the Creeps plays like an updated version of Plan 9.

As far as I know, Johnny intends to make a serious film out of what turned into what is considered to be the worst film ever made. If he succeeds, it might turn out to be a decent little sci-fi horror flick that doesn't take the greatness away from the original. If he fails, it becomes exactly what the original became and ends up being a great homage to the original. And it still won't diminish the original.

Either way, I'm excited to be a part of it.

Huh! Well, they've certainly seen the advertising for District 9. The overall tone of the thing resembles a Sy-Fy Channel original movie. It looks like they are trying to make something serious at least. I do like the Criswell nod from the radio broadcast. But, man, it's just another zombie movie if that teaser is to be believed. I'll keep in mind it's a teaser. And I'll admit I'm curious.

Originally, the movie itself was supposed to have been released today, but the Darkstone crew held out so they could get a bigger budget and go from shooting on super 16mm to super 35mm film. Filming is supposed to commence early next year.

OH! So the teaser really isn't indicative of what this movie will be like at all. Is there even any actual footage from the film in there?

The trailer is based on what is in the current screenplay, and some of the footage will be in the film. I can't say what or how much, though.
