Aion

This is in open beta and I played a bit this morning. Haven't gotten to the "grow wings and become immortal" part yet, but so far, while it looks pretty, there's not much to distinguish it from WoW/EQII.

We had code keys for the closed beta at the LAN center where I work (we pre-ordered a few copies of the game), and we're running the open beta now.

The open beta servers were all overcrowded by mid-afternoon yesterday. I imagine there are a lot of WoW players looking for a breath of fresh air. From what I've seen, it looks to be quite the grindfest, which should probably be expected from a game imported from across the Pacific.

I understand that once you get your wings, the game switches from PvE grinding to guild-centered world PvP (see also: Warhammer and AoC.) I'll be surprised if someone can finally make that model work in the U.S.

They've apparently pre-sold 400,000 copies of the game. I'm just not excited enough about it to play. If I hear great things, maybe I'll take a look beyond what I've seen in the beta. WoW scratches the fantasy itch just fine right now.

I'm really on the fence with this one. It looks great, but it also has a 'been there/done that' vibe to it that I just can't shake. AoC kinda covered me for this kinda thing.

A coworker of mine pre-ordered this and got to start playing on Sunday. He swears that it's the best thing since sliced bread (and he's a WoW junkie), but I remain unconvinced. Any of you other guys take the plunge on this one?

Apparently this game is GRIND GRIND GRIND GRIND GRIND and then some more grind.

So no.

This game brought me back to mmorpgs after a five year absence... but while waiting for launch I went back to DAOC, where the pvp is still fun, and now I have no interest in trying Aion. Can't do the pve grind anymore.

I heard stories of 4+ hour server queues during the head start. They were trying really hard to balance the factions and avoid the mess Warhammer had with 2:1 and even 3:1 ratios between sides.

EDIT: Appears to be happening today as well.

A former officer in my WoW guild has been showing up in the forums daily begging people to join him, and a few other people that quit WoW, in Aion. We have politely told him to fuck off, no one is interested in grind fests that will die in 9 months.

Plus, it's all like metrosexual angel people and shit.

It will be huge in Korea.

Well it's a Korean game, isn't it?
As I understand it, it's been huge over in Korea for a year(?) or so. As such, the US launch already has the benefit of having a year's worth of fixes and tweaks in it.

But the distinct disadvantage of being a Korean MMO about sexy gender-ambiguous angel people.

Well, I was just trying to be a smartass about the boring look of all the huge Korean MMO's, but according to Judas I just know way too much about Korean gaming habits.

Korean MMOs are notorious for their grind too.

Yeah, hence why they don't last all that long with a large playerbase here in the states. The best MMOs, like WoW and LOTR:O (which I didn't particularly enjoy, but recognize as being pretty good) give you more than that to do.
