Assassin's Creed 2

According to google's advanced search functionality we don't have a specific thread about this game yet, whilst I'm tempted to believe that their is a thread somewhere I'll be damned if I can find it.

Anyways I'm really excited for this game, despite that atrocious JUSTICE scored trailer from last week, for two reasons.

One: I really liked Assassin's Creed conceptually and I think that at certain points the game really worked, but it was kind of hamstrung by being too big and too long and possibly being too concerned with its story. Stripped of 90% of its Desmond sections and with the assassinations streamlined a little the game would have been amazing, as it stands it was good but often frustratingly stoppy/starty.

Two: http://www.destructoid.com/assassin-...by-147989.phtm

That looks amazing. The cities look great, the movement looks great, the weaponry looks insane but whats important is that the developer giving the commentary seems to be aware of the limited aspects of the previous games and is desperately trying to talk up how many activies and options you have in this game.

Also that underground bit really reminded me of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time

Also, comedy italian accents.

So anyone else really excited for the game?

I'm excited despite how much i disliked the original game. Someone somewhere said Ubisoft often make excellent Tech Demos, and I think that's true of the original game. In all honesty it feels like a lot of the gameplay was just an afterthought. All games are repetitive to a degree, but In AC it felt like if you've done the first assassination then you've done them all. Throw in some cheap tricks (Lepers. You suddenly becoming a wanted criminal if your Horse runs instead of walks) and you have a thoroughly unsatisfying, yet very pretty, game.

I loved the first one and will write more about it and the sequel at a later time. With that said, I am really sad to see they are doing Italy and not Ancient Rome
post #4 of 285
Rumor has it that Ubisoft was originally planning a Feudal Japan setting for the sequel (Huge Samurai! Evil Bouncy Ninjas!), but based on what I've already seen so far, I think this setting could be rather interesting too, in its own way. The Carnivale-masks alone present some nifty possibilities.
I'm also glad it comes out in November this year, instead of joining the rest of the delayed games in early 2010.
Yeah I adored the original personally, and Renaissance Italy is one of my favorite historical periods so I'm very keen. I only watched the cinematic trailer for the first time today and it had me geeking out pretty hard I have to say.
I continue to adore the first game. The gameplay they showed during E3 looks like they fixed a lot of the first game's mistakes of which there were, honestly, plenty of. So, color me excited.

Also, tell me I'm not the only one already plotting the custom soundtrack?
Ooooh I stuck to the original soundtrack the first time round Justin, but I'm intrigued - what are ya thinking?

Dream Theater.
Will there be a game this time, or is it still just a very pretty running engine?
I was thrilled for it before, but that gameplay video has me really aching for the game. The hidden gun was kind of jarring though. I totally geeked out when they showed the merchant wearing a plague mask. I'm hoping that means many types of poisons to buy.
I absolutely love the first Assassin's Creed. I can see where everybody has problems with it, but I never thought the game got too repetitive. It was one of those games that completely sucked me in and wouldn't let me go until I had finished it.

In fact, I just recently finished playing through the entire game again (mostly because I wanted to get the stupid Conversationalist achievement I missed the first time through), and I enjoyed it just as much the second time around. I even like the Desmond sections, and I hope there are just as many in the new game. I would have been happy with a sequel on par with the first, but I'm excited that Ubisoft seems to be aiming for something that is better rather than resting on their laurels.

For some people, Halo ODST or Modern Warfare 2 are the must-have games this fall. For me, Assassin's Creed 2 is the one game I can't go without. If I could only get one game over the next several months, that would be it.

The first pistol was actually created in Italy in the early 1500s so it's not too jarring for me. The game seems to be using Leonardo Da Vinci as an excuse for all manner of improbable, operable, technology anyways.

In terms of soundtracks the entire time I was playing Assassin's Creed 1 I was listening to Peter Gabriels Last Temptation of Jesus Christ score. For this one I think I might go for some Tallis Scholars

The reason it was jarring for me wasn't the historical aspect, as much as it was the "holy shit that is a loud and thus ineffective assassin's weapon."

We are dealing with a game where no one notices a guy in an all white suit diving 200 feet into bales of hay or leaping from the street onto lampposts. But yeah it is a tad loud
post #16 of 285
But he jumps and leaps and crawls with zest and beautiful athletic prowess, so why would anyone questions his actions when he is so pleasing to the eyes? Plus, he can throw smoke bombs while in the hay! And that will make a fire, and thus, another diversion! It's like Ubisoft hired the greatest assassins of history to make this realistic, then a gun without a silencer! Madness.

BUMP

The mouthbreathers can have Modern Warfare for a few months. This is my Triple-A game of the season.

Both the official XBox and Playstation Magazines were very kind to it from what I hear, but then, they're kind to most games.

Still have no reason to believe it won't deliver though, long as nobody at Ubi Soft does or says anything stupid for the next seven days.

And if anything, THANK YOU FOR NOT DOING UNNECESSARY MULTIPLAYER.
I really sorta want to believe that maybe they'll have fixed the problems to make a better game, dug through the layer upon layer of shit to find the gem that I'm sure was there in Assassin's Creed, but I'm really dubious.
My biggest complaints in AC1 were all tied to the tiny variety of secondary missions, and that video I saw a while back of Ezio poisoning a soldier so he goes insane and murders your target for you bought some good faith on that front.
My biggest complaints were the lack of any variety, the hilariously undercooked combat (press X to win!), the infantile storyline, and the fact that it was two to three hours of gameplay repeated nine times.
Also, in the first game the running, while very gorgeous, was just so easy to do that there was never any real sense of accomplishment for getting to those high vantage points. You just press up and everything happens completely automatically.
Basically if they kept the atmospheric game environment and changed everything else, that would probably a step in the right direction.
My girlfriend really liked the first and can't wait for this one, but she's also my girlfriend so her taste and sanity should automatically be questioned.

I'm not crazy about the first one, but I didn't really get into it beyond running around and grabbing flags and playing in hay.
Unless I see some really spectacular reviews (or some must buy now from trusted friends) this is going to be a pass. Thief does it much better.
So did Hitman.
Pass on this one; never even bothered to finish the first one after how it got repetitive as hell just 4 hours in....and the "the gameworld is limited/restrained because its a memory you are reliving" was annoying as hell; also, beggar women.
I dont think I'll get it used or cheaper next year either; there's way too many released in the first months of 2010.
Yeah, with stuff like Mass Effect 2 and Bioshock 2 coming out early next year, what's the point of getting this?
So you can watch a guy whine while strapped to a table? Oh wait, Heavy Rain's coming out too. Never mind.

Plus, i doubt Heavy Rain wont allow you to free or kill that strapped guy, instead of saying you cant do it because its not how it happened.

I wonder which Dan Brown book they're going to get all their ideas about "secret societies" from this time.

There's also Bayonneta (Lets hope it cleans the bad taste Devil May Cry 4 left in my mouth) and Dark Void ( a game where you kill aliens while using a jetpack and get help from Nikola Tesla!).

Maybe they will get time travel involved using the LHC or antimatter.
If the final boss is Leonardo DaVinci piloting a wooden, winged giant air fortress, I might change my mind about thsi game.

And Dante's Inferno! You kids like killing babies, right? Right? Killing babies in hell? That's what you're into nowadays?

Well, now I know what Fred Phelps is getting the family next year!
Also, that "Bad nanny" achievement aint getting itself.

It's sad to see you continue mocking that poor game, Brad. The greed boss is a 20-foot jew with a cock for a tongue that spurts razorcoins!

Just like in the poem!

GAMES ARE ART
If there's one thing I'd say was missing from my gaming experience (apart from a realistic terrorist simulation), it's the ability to murder children in hell while gaping vaginas writhe all around me.

Well, if you import games from japan, you get to fill one of those wishes...but i think you have to register as a sex offender as part of the ordering process.

Well, to be fair ... the babies do really deserve it. They had the gall to die before being baptized.

I'm with you on this one Justin. I loved AC1, warts and all, and can't wait for this. My Thanksgiving vacation is going to be a week of 360 hedonism.
That's possibly the nerdiest hedonism ever.

I'll also probably have WoW open on one monitor in case any raids start up, and Netflix going on the second monitor while sitting in my computer chair playing AC2/MW2/Dragon Age. I wonder if there is a fleshlight with the RRoD...

The point of getting it is because it will be fucking awesome. I loved the first game, and the second looks to improve all the weaknesses of the first (yay for swimming!). I am definitely getting AC2 as soon as it is released next week.
Your argument is not very compelling.

For example, this game features neither Krogans nor Plasmids, therefore it clearly isn't much to get excited about.

At last, a game that fulfills my urge to swim!

But DaVinci's batwing!
Also, this game clearly isn't Left 4 Dead 2, so I don't understand why anyone would get it next week. You're using some very fuzzy math here.

Well, I dont know much about it, so I have to ask:

-Invisible walls still dont allow you to go anywhere untill you progress the story?
-Only guards and targets are allowed to be killed?
-Combat still repetive and QTE like?
-Are there beggar women?
-Limited to the same 4-5 mission types?
I was more excited for AC than perhaps any game ever (perhaps). I bought my HDTV specifically in anticipation of the games release. I really loved the game, and played it constantly since the release. Yes, the story and missions are a little lame, but I like just making up my own missions and going around exploring, or getting into chases.

With that said, I was very disappointed by how they sanitized all the religion out of the game. I found that very frustrating because of how important that aspect of the history is to the time period. Anyway, once I learned the sequel wouldn't take place in ancient Rome (like I was hoping), I just sort of stopped paying attention

With that said, I'll buy it. But it's sort of interesting how this comes out in a few weeks and I haven't seen the trailer or read previews etc. For the entire year of 2007 I was in a state of breathless anticipation for AC1, and the wait was often unbearable. In a way, it's sort of cool that I'll get this one in just a few weeks without any frustrating wait or counting down the minutes.
