The Bronson Maneuver

CGSociety.org held another one of their themed competitions this year. Last year's theme was 'alien and human relations' and our team won 2nd place in the Team Video category with Coffee Break.

This year's theme was 'secret agent' and we put a much smaller group together this time (just 4 compared to the 10+ we had last time) and finished our entry last night. Considering the fact that we got started halfway into the competition, we're incredibly proud of what we were able to do. (we're also working on a trailer)

I promise you photorealism of the most eyeball-fucking, Uncanny Valley-destroying, life-altering variety.

I give you...

The Bronson Maneuver Trailer

and...

The Bronson Maneuver

and...

The official entry on CGSociety's site combining both videos.

Really great. Your storyboards and concepts were the best thing about it!

Damn nooj, impressive work all around. Shorts, portraits, the whole shebang. I may have to commission a work or two someday.

Make sure to send me lots of photos. Because I'm a goddamned tracer. Hahahah.

In that case, I'll make sure the photos aren't 1:1 scale. They may be hard to find, though. I'm a bit of a narcissist.

Updating the first post of the thread for the link for the trailer for our short. It was a requirement of the competition for some reason, but we decided to make something cool instead of just cutting our short short down to 30 seconds. That's lame. Yea.

That trailer's GREAT, and the feature itself ain't half bad either. Awesome work!

Thanks! Hahaha, I was just joking to one of the guys I worked on it with that the trailer's better than the short itself!

I like elements, but the short doesn't come together for me. I can't quite put a finger on why.

If you figure out what doesn't come together for you, I'd love to hear it. One thing I've heard from a couple people is that they wished the dude made it a little further through the lasers. But that was generally an issue of time and ability. We didn't have enough of either to get much more elaborate.

That's just it. I've watched a total of 12 times now.

It feels like a demo rather than a completed short. There's no real sell to the end result. It just happens.

Hahahaha. Thanks for rewatching it so many times!

So about our ending... it used to be a bit more elaborate, but as the deadline loomed, we had to make some cuts because the guy who did the stop-motion animation had crunch-time start on the show he was on. He wanted to do this for fun and it started to become not fun. So we had to cut back for his sanity.

Here's how we originally had the ending go:

Laser Waltz: Storyreel

The password is: lasers

Outstanding storyboarding - but this is one time when your time restraints made you consider a better ending.

Literally being zapped in the blink of an eye - a slap in the face of all that graceful movement - meant your punchline was so sudden, unexpected and all the more unique. The original vision overstays its welcome, dwelling on the joke and becomes a bit silly. Your altered version is the better short because of it.

It's still good stuff man, your storyboards put mine to shame.

That's exactly what we came to think once we finished the short. See, we originally thought we had to compromise because of the deadline but came to feel differently once we saw the end result. It didn't feel like a compromise anymore.

Deep down, we knew we were overstaying our welcome with the bloody ending. That was kinda the point. It made us laugh. We really thought we'd go back and make the 'better version' once the contest was over. But we've decided against it now.

A nice surprise! Our short got Staff Picked on Vimeo!

I forgot to get back to you.

Yeah, there's something lost between the storyboard planning and the final result. Some concessions are made to get the flow and timing down, but it just feels like there's something else missing.

Maybe, if it was a little longer. But, if you're entering this short into festivals and competitions...then I understand the time constraints.
