Serena Williams just got thrown out of the US Open

Is anyone here following the US Open here? Serena just got kicked out of her match for threatening to ram her racket down a line judge's throat.

Screw UFC, tennis is the new badass sport.

As a big Clijsters fan, I was quite happy by this development, but man, that line judge better change her address tomorrow.
I would tend to believe her if she said that to me.

How great would it be if Serena's first comment to the press after this was, "John McEnroe? I fucked him! OHHH!"

I knew I would eventually regret dumping cable for Netflix and online content.

For realz?

Scandal! I'm just happy that my girl Wozniacki actually made it to the finals in a grand slam. She was ranked #268 in the world a little under 2 years ago. Too bad she'll probably be crushed by Clijsters in the final.

Go Wozzy!

No, Williams should change her address... to appology-ville!

Anyway, I think it is disrespectful and she should be a role model and all that. She is getting paid the big bucks for being good at playing the game. This is not the same as being a great player though. A great player is gracious, and humble.

Just like with Congressman "Dispicable Coward" Wilson and his shameful outburst at The President. Obviously their motivations were different. Williams did not make her remarks out of racial hatred. With that said, she should still have risen above her emotions .

She is at the top of the tennis world, and should realize that if there is a bad call, she needs to just take that as a signal to take her game to the next level, not sink into the muck of bad sportswomanship.

Everyone makes mistakes and has moments where we do not rise to the standards we'd like to set for ourselves, so I sincerely hope she will use this incident as a learning experience and will emerge a stronger player as a result.

That's funny. In her press conference after she left the court she cited McEnroe as a personal hero.

It was on CBS tonight.

Did they show a replay demonstrating that it actually was a foot-fault?

The replay showed she didn't fault. So without the antics she could have stayed in for another minute or so.

She was just overplayed by Clijsters tonight.

What replay did you watch? Here they only showed it from the camera behind her and from that angle it's impossible to tell. Her shoe just has to touch the line and it's a fault. But if you saw it from a different point of view then OK!

Williams was in the press conference afterwards wondering why the judge felt she'd been threatened. I don't know, maybe it was when you said you'd shove the ball down her throat. Just a hunch.

They didin't even show here in L.A. At least i don't think they did. We were looking for it all day on CBS and they had CSI reruns. I thought it was postponed till tomorrow cause of the rain. Anyone know what time this aired?

What the heck happened?

The article I read said the judge claimed Serena threatened her by saying "I'm going to kill you". If that's the case, I wonder if the judge really took it as a threat, in the US the phrase is often used in a very non-literal way.
That seemed like an attempt to end the match without letting her opponent celebrate. She basically kept unleashing threats, obscenities, and threatening gestures until she got penalized. Really poor sportsmanship. And hilarious!

I love the look on the face of the female ref. Pelosi incarnated!

"You lie!"

Here we go

"I will kill you!"
"What? I didn't say I'd kill you"

You have to be pretty stupid to threaten someone in front of a crowd and then deny it.

Oh and props to the woman who shouts out "Yeah ya did!" when Serena denies it.

It was right around the time of her press conference. The replay was from the side and clearly indicated she had not faulted.

I was half expecting Keyboard Cat to appear at the end. You know that's coming.

Clijsters definitely would have won without it, but I wasn’t happy at all with the development itself. Neither foot fault actually was a foot fault, so seeing it end due to referee overreaching didn’t sit well with me, I would’ve much rather have seen her win it with her play.

None of that is to excuse Serena’s actions, as her outburst was grounds for default, but that was hardly a satisfying conclusion to what was an entertaining match.

I liked McEnroe's assessment of Serena's outburst: "A bit much".

She's an ass, the whole William's family is a bag of asses. I live in the same area they do in Palm Beach County and have met several people who have dealt with both Serena and Venus and their parents and have never heard anything less than pure contempt about them. I'm not exaggerating, from waiters to personal auto insurance agents everyone I've met with a Williams story just hates them.

For me, this was far more interesting than the Serena stuff.

Last night I'd heard that our President would be making a special appearance on Sixty Minutes (60 Minutes), the CBS News Television News Magazine featured in the Russell Crowe movie "The Insider". This meant that I would get the rare chance to see Barack Obama in HD. The only TV channels that I get HD signals for are the networks, so the chance to see Obama in prime time with even his pores visible was too good to pass up.

Unfortunately it was preempted by tennis.

With that said, I tuned in briefly to the tennis, and saw the strange shot in question. Surely this was more accident than skill? I do not know much about tennis (my friends play but I prefer Mario Tennis), and while the shot was miraculous, it seemed more the work of random chance than a brilliant display of Federer's peerless mastery of tennis ball physics

Yeah, it's mostly luck...the old 'return the ball between the legs from behind' shot is always a last-ditch, what-the-hell effort, but I'm not sure I've ever seen one returned for a winner before. Certainly not to guarantee match point.
