Blood and bone (2009)

Blood and Bone is a fantastic martial arts/MMA styled movie, and with Seagal's Driven to Kill, one of the best DTV movies so far this year. Its based off a book so you can feel especially classy when watching this if you have that in mind. It is theatrical quality, and the martial arts are fantastic. In my opinion Michael Jai White is one of the best martial artists working in movies today (along with Scott Adkins). He is as lethal as Seagal was in his golden era. With Michael Jai White, you also get a star studded cast including Julian Sands, the always menacing Kimbo Slice (in a small role), and former WCW wrestler "THE CAT" who wears curlers during his fights!

When it starts you think its going to be a run of the mill street fighting movie, but then a shadowy and evil fight club called the CONSORTIUM is introduced, led by the high flying racist Julian Sands, who explains to the main villain why he thinks blacks are so entertaining in a monologue. Michael Jai White is a great and likable hero, and I hope he comes back as BONE in many sequels.

The main villain was great too. So unpredictable! All smiles one minute and the next he is stabbing you with a samurai sword. For me the most memorable scene was when he lulls an enemy into comfort by singing "Dance Hall Days" with him at a fancy dinner. Then he starts dancing around and stabs the motherfucker! The movie is always taking unexpected turns. You think this guy is just a lowlife pimp/street hustler/whatever and then you learn about his fascination with samurais and ancient warriors.

So I recommend this movie even if you do not like DTV action movies, I think it will make you... a true believer!

One final thing I thought was great was the end credits. As the credits roll, some footage is playing on the side, and you think its going to be like bloopers or something, a la at the end of the Rush Hour movies. But no! Its an epilogue where the villain, now in prison, is raped in the showers! Now that is what I call an epilogue!

Can't wait to finally check this out. Feels like it has been years since I first saw the trailer. It'll be tough for Jai White to top UNDISPUTED 2, but even if this comes somewhat close I'll be satisfied.
I downloaded this because I don't think it's getting released in the UK any time soon. It's the best DTV movie I've ever seen. Lots of good fights. It's a definite buy for me when it comes out over here.
I thought it was a crotch-rippin good time. The movie ends with the words "I GOTTA TAKE CARE OF SOME BUSINESS", so I'd like to see more movies where man of honor BONE rights wrongs and helps people.

Rufio is fucking horrible, though. I was hoping BONE would quadruple kick him in the face.
On the other hand, Bob Sapp and Kimbo Slice put on acting clinics!
YO WHERE DAT NIGGA BONE????

Just about every woman in the movie wants a piece of BONE as well! From Gina Carano (in a 2 second cameo) to the bad guy's girlfriend, to the so-called "family oriented" woman whose house he lives in. Bone is a man of honor though, he doesn't bed down with any of them.

I don't think Blood and Bone is coming to my shores anytime soon. So I watched some of the fight clips instead. Very impressed.

2 questions though

1) What's the name of that Final Boss fighter in the end? (the one that wears a Tux)

2) What kind of Martial Art was Jai White using in that final fight? A kind of Tae Kwan Do?

Parts of this movie will really HIT HOME this week.
There's a shirtless Tai Chi scene that's very Dalton-esque.

You might have actually sold me here, Hans. Not too interested in fighting movies compared with gunplay action, but your enthusiasm is infectious.

Best part of the movie, which is as entertaining and mixed with quality fights as everyone in here is saying. Surprised at how much I liked it, as I just rented it out of the morbid curiosity of seeing Kimbo Slice in a film (plus Sapp and Carano didn't hurt either)

Was disappointed he didn't survive long enough to work in his own catchphrase, "That's how a nigga eat!". Maybe a BONE prequel?
Just got it... Fuck REDBOX! They had it advertised on their banner thing and no BLOD N BONE. Brotha had to goto HOLLYWOOD VIDEO. It's all good. Bout to see Kimbo stabbed...
An amazing tour de force. The only thing I thought was disappointing was in the montage when Rufio and Bone are winning fights and making money, it's all set to this horrible rock song. It should have been rap!

Julian Sands proclaiming "the high flying shenanigans of the negro" to entertain him was a real winner. I don't really know anything about MMA but I assume the big henchman guys were fighters. They did pretty good, especially Hammerman beating up Rufio going WHERE DAT NIGGA BONE about twenty times.

I wish you a succesful Bone franchise, Michael Jai!

Rufio! That is an appalling name for the only horrible character in the movie. I did love when Rufio and Bone were driving and Rufio drops his ghetto gimmick for a second and goes "I... I love you man..." and then Bone turns to him, looking like he's about to rip his head off and then Rufio just forgets it and goes back to his shrill ebonics!
He throws his joint out of the car! I was very upset at that.

MOTHAFUCKAS AND MUTHAFUCKETTES
Hammerman was played by Bob Sapp, a fighter who loses even when he does stuff like this:

The guy who shivs Bone's best bud is streetfighting internet sensation KIMBO SLICE.

Both of them are completely outclassed and destroyed by Michael Jai White.
He's molding himself into the next seagal and I welcome it!

Kimbo is fun to watch, but I think I have to say he was wasted in his cameo role. I could easily see him being the main baddie in BLOODIER & BONIER (aka B&B II), perhaps as an evil ruler of a underground bumfights cult. He's got the scary hobo look down perfectly. Yechh! Look at him. He probably smells like Ice-T's nasty dreadlocks that he cut off in Surviving the Game! "Be sure to wash yo nasty azz!"

Aw, man... This movie is a fucking hoot. Love Eamonn Walker and his hypocrisy w/ the cussing word(s) - LOL!

I LOVE the subdued Black VS White thing (the bigger dick bit). Just too funny. Eamonn Walker was just trying to come up - but damn, his mind-set was just fucked up.
I don't know where to begin. Just an astonishing showcase for Jai White. The reckoning he dishes out in this movie is a high-water mark for low-budget martial arts filmmaking.

Eamonn Walker is gleefully sadistic. The "Dance Hall Days" scene is a show-stopper but I was equally horrified by the way he handled one of his hoes that got out of line. Pure evil incarnate. His cronie using the windshield wipers to clean up her blood was a nice touch.

Ya know what? I didn't mind Pinball all that much. Yeah, at first he was real annoying with his "Knuckle Up!" routine but after a while I came to accept him, much like Bone did.

The only minor fault I found was that they didn't have Jai White fight the guy in curlers, A.K.A. "The Queer who Inspires Fear!" Really thought Bone and him would tussle. But it probably wouldn't have been too different a match-up from the thumping he threw down on Hammerman.

The way I see it there's still a Consortium out there and Julian Sands is still making a lot of money off the blood of others. He needs to pay, and I hope Bone returns one day to collect on that debt.

Sands needs to pay and so does his sword holder OHARA! I guess they're saving the Bone/OHARA fight for the sequel. He also has to take out Kimbo for killing his friend. I'm assuming that's the "business" he spoke of at the end.

And the Pinball characters shows how much of a MAN OF HONOR Bone is. You know he wanted to smash his face in, but he held back!
What's great about the final showdown between Bone and James was how one of the Consortium's armed guards continues to keep watch by slowly pacing back and forth in the background.

Gotta give a lot of credit for the film to director Ben Ramsey. He doesn't do a lot of crazy camera tricks. He understood that the film's best special effect is Jai White and just keeps the camera steady on him. Though he did throw in a couple stylish shots, like the great one of Hammerman pounding away on that redneck.
And the guards continue to pace when all of the old rich people flee for some reason!
OH NO TWO BLACKS WITH SWORDS! We didn't sign up for this!
Did you see those sheiks? They really hauled ass. They were gone.

Yeah. That was funny-as-hell. Dude was calm and cool pacing back and forth. Up until five-o pulled up.

I still prefer PIT FIGHTER directed by Jesse Johnson compared to BLOOD AND BONE. And IMHO: PIT FIGHTER was a well-done DTV actioner - but the ending kinda ruined it.
I haven't seen a film like this in years, it played like A.W.O.L.'s brother from another mother. Just a real solid, straight-up fight film without any pretensions. The experience was like watching an early Van-Damme film for the first time.
I have to agree on Ramsey doing a good job, I actually wouldn't mind seeing a Luke Cage film from him now, he was always the guy who wrote The Big Hit to me before this. That's not a movie you would want to be associated with.

Is Jai-White usually that big? It's impressive how the guy can move like he does, that quadruple kick was just immense. I can't say i'm a fan of Eamonn Walker ( he can pose and give crazy-eye, if your lucky he'll do both at the same time ) but then i didn't have to for this film. All I wanted was for Bone to kick his ass so i guess he did his job well enough. I was a bit disappointed though with the swords, i wanted Bone to pound him to a pulp with his fists.

(Rufio should have stayed on Neverland, the lad grew up to have a real girly voice, bit depressing how he can go from badass to this. Also, Tamara was played by Marvin Gaye's daughter, I thought I knew her face. She was in Ali and The Matrix sequels)
Jai White would make an awesome Luke Cage.
And I think he's been that huge for a while now. He was definitely gigantic in UNDISPUTED 2. He's pretty quick for a guy with muscles on top of muscles.
Hahahaha I know it's not "accurate" but Bone and Rufio as Cage and Rand would be awesome
post #26 of 57
My dream Luke Cage and Iron Fist would be MJW and Scott Adkins!
Or if you can't get Scott Adkins, MJW and the smug douchebag guy in a suit that he fights at the end of BLOOD AND BONE!

You are all missing out on in-depth and philosophical "O'HARA" discussion on imdb.

I do not get that "Ohara" character. How could anyone with the self discipline to become a martial arts master and the professionality if you can call it that to be an agent for Iron Hand be pathetic enough to try to gang rape an innocent and defenseless young woman? totally contradictory.
Well, how does someone with the spirit of the samurai such as James (who does not drink, smoke or curse) hold his wife hostage with CRACK PIPES??? The seams in this movie are beginning to show!

James is NO GENTLEMAN! For such a high rolling and "high flying negroe" he sure does throw boring parties! A bunch of people standing around a big screen TV with a video game playing on it!
You could see he was really trying to be a member of the Consortium there. He was still too poor to have his guests sit around and watch murder, so he had to resort to digital recreations of it on a screen. They still seemed to be having a good time, but I guess they were used to parties with just grape drink and weed so the video game was a classy bonus already!

I guess you're right, they were enjoying the party. So much so that no one saw or heard (or cared!!) when James took his crack slave to the next room and pressed her up against a wall and choked her or whatever!

"Have some crack baby!"

Maybe we can get a prequel where we see Bone's TWIN BROTHER and the tragic MMA-related events that led to his demise. Perhaps pull it off Godfather 2 stylez- with Bone's current day fist-based-justice coming to a head while we see flashbacks of the Brothers Bone unravelling.
Eamonn Walker: when Idris Elba is just too expensive!

James showed an enormous amount of restraint when Ms Crack and Bone implied that they had relations! Perhaps the seeds of a gentleman were starting to grow! I'm also rather confused on the abortion issue.

It sounds interesting but I'd much rather just have the continuing adventures of Bone. Maybe even James could come back, if STEAMIN' EAMONN would agree to return. This time he has changed his ways, he is no longer a gentleman. Prison has made him harder than before (in more ways than one??) and now he cusses, does drugs, drinks, and kills anyone in his way (with his hook hand) to get vengeance on BONE.
Was that wronged woman even his wife? He was just using the crack to keep the bitch in check. That's what evil men do!
As for the abortion thing, I guess it was a rumor that was spread around to make James seem more ruthless and tough!

And how come no one is talking about Blood and Bone's most criminally underused character? I'm talking about BLACK GUY WITH A BLANK EXPRESSION ON HIS FACE WHO RECORDS BONE WITH HIS PHONE! I thought they were going to show him posting Bone fights on youtube, but no!

I'm not the only B-movie dork here that picked up that O'Hara was masterfully played by Bob Wall? A nice nod to Enter the Dragon.
Wow, I didn't pick up on that. Good catch.

I did spot Gene LeBell though.
I love the technology in this movie. Not only does it have a guy using a cell phone to record Bone fighting, not only does it have a reverse GPS tracking cell phone called the Pickle that looks like an iPhone, but evidently the cops can receive cell phone videos too.

Jai White and Mullins would work for me. The ages work out better franchise-wise at any rate.

Color Matt Mullins' hair blonde, and I think he could pull it off.
I can't think of a better direct-to-DVD movie. It's hilarious AND badass.
Did not disappoint, guys. Shockingly self-aware and fun. If B-movies are like pizza, then this is some Tavern on the Green shit. It's the first movie I've seen in a while (well, Star Trek) that I actively want a sequel to. This deserves a cult following and a long, healthy run on the midnight movie circuit.

And it's not until just now, reading the thread, that I realized Pinball was Rufio. Hah.
If you liked this, you can't lose with UNDISPUTED 2!
It will get you on the Scott Adkins train as well.
I saw UNDISPUTED 1 in the theater. I'll have to check the sequel out.
Undisputed 2 is a completely different animal. George Chambers is fighting in jail once again, but it's more of martial arts action/bloodsport type of movie.

If there's one thing BLOOD AND BONE is missing, it's MJW's sudden kung fu hands from UNDISPUTED 2.

Best adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo in years!

And I agree, we need a Bloodier and Bonier sequel. Hopefully Julian Sands will be back.
Saw this for $15 at the local Walmart. Rented it awhile back and liked it but it was damn expensive everywhere. Maybe now's the time to pick it up since there's no point in waiting for a Blu-Ray release.

I just have a hard time spending more than $10 on a DVD when I've bought so many Blu-Rays for the same price.
A great action flick, certainly a lot better than some of the big-studio theatrical releases we get every year with dull, lackluster excuses for action sequences and fight scenes.

Blood And Bone has a great energy to it, very lively. It gets you pumped up just watching it.
Aww you beautiful Chud folk I wouldn't have found this gem without you. Brilliant stuff all around here from Jai White and crew. My god does Miss Gaye have a wonderful rack. Walker I enjoyed in the past (Tears of the Sun, Lord of War) and also did here. As everyone else mentioned Rufio really drags the film down.

Jai White no doubt about it needs to be the new Blade Warner Brothers get on that shit now.

Also nice Bob Sapp ass kicking of the whip badass guy from The Rundown as well.

Here is a recent interview with Ben Ramsey, director of Blood and Bone. It's a pretty good read. Ramsey gives a bit of insight as to why Dragonball: Evolution turned out so horribly and why Michael Jai White isn't in more movies:

Solid interview. I definitely enjoyed the movie despite the fact that they used really crappy cameras.
