Halo 3: ODST

More like Halo 3: YAWN.

Incredibly boring so far.
Saw you playing this on my friends list and just came to inquire how it was.. had no real interest in it at all until I read that it comes with the Halo 3 online on the separate disc with all the extra map packs, but if the SP sucks than it's really not worth the 70 bucks

Yeah, that second disc contains the Halo 3 multiplayer with all the maps so far and three new ones. You'll also be able to access the Halo: Reach Beta next year by picking this up, but otherwise there's no real reason you shouldn't just download the map packs for Halo 3.

But for the single player... well, we'll see if it picks up. But it's not looking good.
You seemed like you had your mind made up already about this one, though. I'll be glad to take it off of your hands. Make it out to a Mr. Pepe Sylvia.

I did? That's bullshit. I held out hope for this one, and I'll give any game a fair chance to pull me in. I was hoping that they listened to the criticisms of the last game, but instead I got a game where for most of the beginning you're walking slowly (no run button) around a big open world while smooth jazz plays and nothing happens.
Maybe I'm confusing Halo 3 talk with ODST talk.

They've seriously kept the slow mo in game cutscenes from Halo 3?

Well at least Firefight might be fun, maybe.
Apparently the game is also only three hours long.

Value!
Uh oh. This doesn't sound good. Maybe its not too late for me to cancel my pre-order.
I've read at a bunch of different places that it's around the same length as the previous Halo campaigns. Anyone who's playing it here finish it in three hours yet?
Do you have to download the Halo 3 maps to your HDD?
Is this smaller in scope than Halo 3?

Nope.

So much.
And yet I have this weird, naive hope that Reach might turn out good. What the fuck is wrong with me?
The most annoying thing for me is the fact that the firefight/horde mode doesn't have any form of matchmaking in place. Parties and friend invites only it seems. Lame.

Alex, In regards to the Halo map disc and multiplayer in ODST, can you switch between the ODST multiplayer and HALO 3 multiplayer without having to swap disc's from the drive?

I dunno about anyone else, but I get the feeling Microsoft didn't have any big first party guns for this season and basically converted a DLC pack into a full price game. Cheapening your flagship franchise for a cash grab. Hmmm.

On a more positive Halo note, I'm quite enjoying HALO WARS co-op and online VS modes. Got in some Great 3vs3 matches yesterday. The game's fun.

Wow, if that's the case I could just pack up my things and head to Canada now. I intentionally delayed my exodus until after ODST shipped, but in time for the start of the new Canucks season.

Arg well I'm under embargo for everything but the first few missions and firefight maps, but things do pick up later in the game. Firefight is fun although I haven't been able to get a 4-player match in yet. So many gripes with the game, though.

The only online multiplayer is on the Halo 3 Multiplayer disc. The ODST disc has all the co-op stuff- campaign and firefight maps.

Hah, this is very similar to one of the notes I jotted down while playing this.

So this is 2 discs? Does it consider the multiplayer as regular Halo 3 and make the all those achievements I missed out on possible to get?

Yes and yes.

God damn, why does every comment of yours about this game always have to be negative!

Awesome. I'm still a bit nervous about picking it up full price but being able to go back and get those achievements is a nice bonus.
My Halo 3 disc has been damaged to hell, making this buy more likely. All of the original Halo 3 maps aren't playable, and getting them on this makes more sense than re-buying Halo 3. I'll also be able to delete the DLC maps from my hard-drive, so I have more space for the Ballad of Gay Tony.

I didn't even think about that, good call.
How is this pronounced? ODST? O.D.S.T? Or Ode-stuh? What an awkward title.
It was either in an article somewhere or on the Bungie podcast but they said the problems with installing Halo 3 to the HDD won't be an issue with ODST, in case anyone was wondering.
I'm still looking forward to playing Firefight mode with my buddies and the trailers suggest that the campaign has a decent story.
Thread Starter
It doesn't.

Firefight's the only good (new) part of this package, really.
Are there any vehicle based sections in the game? I was under the impression that there wasn't supposed be very many.
There were some vehicles in the trailers so I'm assuming there's some vehicle segments in the game.

Rooftop Gameplay Video

After watching that I'm starting to understand what you mean about boring Alex. It basically seems like your in a shooting gallery with no real threat. And the music is horrible. It must be some sorta cruel inside joke that Bungie is making us suffer through.

Also, I'm not 100% on my Halo lore, but isn't the rocket launcher extremely heavy and only spartans can carry it?
I have to say that video kind of re-sold me on the game.

Also I can't believe how strong the art style is for the game, it's the same graphics engine as Halo 3 but the stylisation they've chosen makes it look so much better.
Why didn't anyone tell me Fillion was in this?
So the reviews are coming in, and they're all predictably marshmallow soft. So there are no new gameplay advances and no memorable moments and the storytelling sucks and it only lasts six hours (that's if you're playing on the harder difficulty level and "at a leisurely pace") and it only includes three new maps and one gameplay mode stolen from Gears of War 2...but it's still OUTSTANDING! A MUST BUY!

I mean, I can't say I'd be too eager to piss off the Bungie faithful either, but Jesus Christ, guys. This is like the first wave of Phantom Menace reviews.

Oh hey look embargo's up. Fuck those marshmellows. Here's what I think.

That clip is from one of the few interesting levels. Each level is a flashback and each is centered around a certain theme, basically. There's a warthog level, a tank level, a sniper level, etc.. This wouldn't be so bad if the main storyline that links them all together (that you have to play through) was solid, but it has you walking around a barren city looking for clues. It's mind-numbingly boring. The storyline is shitty and not even Fillion can save it. The dialogue is fucking atrocious. At one time after killing an alien your guy yelled "You ever see Full Metal Jacket?!?" as a taunt, and I'm still scratching my head over that one.

The storyline takes around 8 hours and is so bad you won't want to play through it again, and I was taking breaks pretty damn frequently. Not even as good as Halo 3. This is DLC stretched to its breaking point, nothing more. Firefight's a good mode but is friends-only (4 people online, 2-player co-op only on one console) and it gets really old after a few rounds, because it takes a helluva long time (least a couple of hours if you're good) and they just keep throwing the same enemies at you, wave after wave.

Full review coming Monday after I get some more Firefight in, but I can smell the hate mail already.

You can't double wield (because only Spartans can!) but you can flip over Warthogs with a flick of the wrist. So, who the fuck knows.
What I want is a ten hour experience, the promise of Halo 2's open world romp around New Mombassa, taking on missions at your own pace, starring Nathan Fillion, Adam Baldwin, and Tricia Helfer as fun, cool characters. It seems like I've been slightly misguided in the expectations department.

You can't be fucking serious. How stupid.

I remember the bridge stage from Halo 2 has regular grunts using it(often plopped on your tank), so who knows.

I thought this was going to be sold at a lower price, when I saw the full price at the end of the Kotaku review I was thrown back a bit. Sounds like shit.

All the non-firefight multiplayer is still with Spartans and Elites?

New maps and all the old ones on their own disc so we don't run into those "map failed to load" issues during system link. WORTH IT.

60 bucks for a two year old game that we've all bought before? Hardly.
Hey, remember when Bungie used to released glorified map packs on a disc for $20, not $60? Good times, good times.

It depresses me knowing this thing will sell millions, despite what Rockstar's been doing with GTA 4, and Bethesda's been doing with Fallout 3 for roughly $20-$40 cheaper.
Bah, I'll wait until this drops. I already need to start saving up for wallet-fest this November (Warfare, Dragons, and Zombies, oh my!). There is also the chance that Brutal Legend and Borderlands might be good too, so why waste it on this?
Is it a budget title over in the US? Over here it's about £10-£15 cheaper than most other games. As it is I'm still getting it for some co-op to tide me over until Operation Flashpoint and Borderlands.
It was like $50 when I pre-ordered it from Amazon, but it's selling for full price over here.
I'm starting to re-think my pre-order.
The Kotaku review mentions a side-story involving a girl named Sadie. Isn't that the name of one of the characters from the I Love Bees metagame back when Halo 2 was released?

That's three times now I've had friends over and we've gotten bored of playing through the campaign and firefight within an hour, switched over to Rocket Races, and not looked back.

You know, the rocket races that are included in my copy of Halo 3.
I'd really love to avoid buying this. Ill probably take a extended break from work Tuesday and hit up Blockbuster and see If I can rent it before i pick it up from Gamestop.

Achievements aside, the multiplayer is the least of my concerns.
Dammit for once I want Alex to be wrong for reasons other than him being a douche. But I'm hearing similar stuff from a lot of other critics who've had a chance to play the game. None of them are as harsh as Alex, but they all say it's essentially DLC.

But who really wants a new story mode anyway? Half the people I know who play Halo 3 haven't even tried the campaign. It's never been the selling point.
