Directors most represented in your DVD/video collection

Have we done this? Count 'em up, roll 'em out!

Rules:

All feature films count in whatever format (DVD, Blu Ray, DVD-R, laserdisc, VHS, Beta, 16 mm, whatever). If you own something in more than format, it only counts once. If you have MAD DOG TIME on DVD and on VHS under the title TRIGGER HAPPY, that counts only once.

TV shows do not count. Don't add Abel Ferrara's episodes of Miami Vice.

TV films do count. So you may add L.A. TAKEDOWN and SOMEONE'S WATCHING ME!

Short films don't count. You can allow something barely under an hour, like FORGOTTEN SILVER.

Only films on which the director is credited count, even if the director is under a pseudonym. So THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD goes on your Christian Nyby list, BURN HOLLYWOOD BURN on your Arthur Hiller.

Don't count something more than once because you also own an alternate cut. 18 different versions of ALEXANDER don't count. The Harlin and Schrader versions of the fourth EXORCIST do count separately.

Sequels count separately, but the two volumes of KILL BILL are one film. The THREE and FOUR MUSKETEERS are also one film. Films shot at the same time but always intended to be separated (LORD OF THE RINGS) are counted separately.

I fully expect someone within three posts to reveal that they own all 6 of George Lucas' films as director. Not sure why, I just expect it. I might actually be disappointed if I don't see this happen.

Here we go.

From my collection:

Werner Herzog (12)
Mario Bava (10)
Jackie Chan (9)
John Cassavetes (8)
Claude Chabrol (8)
Walter Hill (8)
Wong Kar-Wai (8)
George A. Romero (7)
Zhang Yimou (6)
Kazuhiko Yamaguchi (6) - Yes, I am surprised as the rest of you to find that I own 6 films by the director of WANDERING GINZA BUTTERFLY

David Cronenberg (9)

I own 5 of Lucas' 6, and the one I don't own is arguably his best film(American Graffiti).

I have 12 of the 13 Coen Bros. movies(and Crimewave on VHS!). Never got Hudsucker because A) I hate snapper cases THAT DAMN MUCH(and I think it's out of print), and B) I have a buddy I can borrow it from.

I have 10 or 11 of both Spielberg and Scorsese's films.

I still say Kill Bill is 2 movies.

I keep my Argento, Bava and Fulci seperate from the rest, and keep more than one copy of their movies, but I had to actually count the rest.

Argento is tricky though. I'm counting Five Man Army (which he co-directed), and all five of his TV movies. I won't count the three documentaries about him.

Dario Argento (23 movies, 45 discs, 10 VHS)
Lucio Fulci (21)
Mario Bava (17, plus 1/2 if you count House of Exorcism)
Steven Spielberg (15)
Takashi Miike (9)
Peter Jackson (8)
Hayao Miyazaki (8)
George Romero (8)
Tim Burton (7, got to remember Nightmare Before Xmas doesn't count)
Coen Brothers (7)
Stuart Gordon (7)
Sam Raimi (7)
Michelle Soavi (7)
Martin Scorses (7)
Spielberg and Huston were 1. and 2. After that, this grew tedious.
Um, I have 17 Hitchcock films. Beyond that, I don't believe I own more than two of any given director's work.
Clearly you guys take your OCD meds.
This was fun until ye olde ADD set in. Kind of a classicist list for me.

Alfred Hitchcock (32)
Steven Spielberg (20)
David Lean (15)
John Ford (15)
Charlie Chaplin (12)
Powell & Pressburger (11)
William Wyler (9)
Billy Wilder (8)
Orson Welles (7)
Cecil b. DeMille (7)
Francois Truffaut (6)
Jean-Luc Goddard (6)
Robert Bresson (4)
Why does everyone have a quadzillion Hitchcock films? Was there a box set?
Really? I was about to say I was surprised Hitch wasn't on more of these lists. For me, and I assume for many, he is even above Spielberg in terms of a director who opened my eyes to filmmaking as a kid.
Scorsese (23)
Hitchcock (21)
Spielberg (18)
Coens (13)
Lumet (12)
Altman, De Palma (11)
R.Scott, A.Mann, Wise, Hawks, Coppola (10)
P.Sturges, W.Herzog, P.Jackson (9)
For some reason, Richard Donner holds my record, with 7.

I own more movies directed by Prince than I do movies directed by Scorsese, Hitchcock, Kurosawa, Altman, Kubrick and the Coens combined.
Martin Scorsese (12)
Stanley Kubrick (7)
David Lynch (6)
Akira Kurosawa (6)
Quentin Tarantino (6)
Federico Fellini (5)
PT Anderson (5)
John Carpenter (5)
Takashi Miike (4)
George Romero (4)
Darren Aronofsky (4)
Ingmar Bergman (3)
Lucio Fulci (3)

I can't buy many movies anymore, hard times suck.
Shit, almost forgot.....

Hayao Miyazaki (8)

THX is my fav. The only one I have, too.

I had a large collection of Italian horror films but sold most of them. A lot of Sergio Martinos. Had a print of THE FIVE MAN ARMY recorded off television. Jesus, 21 Fulci movies? In terms of what's accessible in the States, that's almost a completist.

I don't own much by directors whose best-known work I can always catch on television. So Hitch makes that list. I own PSYCHO on DVD, and a small number (STRANGERS ON A TRAIN, SHADOW OF A DOUBT, and SUSPICION) are VHS dubs from TCM.

I'm hoping you were honest, Paul, and didn't count the Banana Splits episodes.

I own Bruiser, alas. Waiting for a decent release of Creepshow.

Do you have O. J. Simpson: Juice on the Loose?

I'm crossing my fingers this turns up as an extra on SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD.

Martin Ritt's an underrated director. I've got the following from him.

Norma Rae
Hud
The Outrage
The Spy Who Came in From the Cold
The Molly Maguires
Hemingway's Adventures of a Young Man
The Long, Hot Summer
Hombre
Sounder
The Great White Hope

I re-ran my program and the breakdowns increased by director. Also, I'm a huge Paul Newman fan...which explains a lot of the Ritt.

Tim Burton (10)
Sam Rami (8)
John Carpenter (7)
Kevin Smith (6)

Oliver Stone
Richard Linklater
John Woo
Ridley Scott
Stephen Speilberg

I don't own any Martinos I can recall. I've got a lot of other Italian horror and Spaghetti Westerns, but not enough by one single director to make a difference on this thread. I've got a few bootlegs I don't count though.

I've got the German release of Beatrice Cenzi and the Italian Massacre Time, but otherwise I've got a lot of the US releases. Still I've kept myself from buying a lot of the really bad movies Shriek Show has released (Sweet House of Horrors, House of Clocks, Daemonia), and never found a cheap used copy of Aenigma or The Erotocist.

In related news: I got my review copy of New York Ripper on Blu-ray today. Can't wait for all the hi-def misogyny!

This was somewhat eye opening for me.

Charlie Chaplin 10
Alfred Hitchcock 10
Hayao Miyazaki 9

Terry Gilliam 6
Don Coscarelli 6
Peter Jackson 6
Tim Burton 5
Stanley Kubrick 5
Sam Raimi 5
Jean-Pierre Jeunet 4
Sergio Leone 4
Brad Bird 3

I never realized that I had amassed such a big silent comedy collection.

I have Barton Fink, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and Burn After Reading. 5.

Ha! Totally unintentional. Also completely neglected my FORD AT FOX boxed set, so Ford leapfrogs all in my list by over 20 titles:

John Ford (38)
Alfred Hitchcock (32)
Steven Spielberg (20)
David Lean (15)
Charlie Chaplin (12)

Guess Orson Welles was right in arguing about the masters.

M'kay:

Steven Spielberg: 13 (counting him as producer, this number would triple)
Kevin Smith: 8 (counting animated Clerks)
George Lucas: 7
Peter Jackson 6
Sam Rami: 6
James Cameron: 5
Tim Burton: 4

I have tons of 3 I won't bother to list.
I'm away from my collection at the moment but I know that I have the following:

Stanley Kubrick (all 13)
Terrence Malick (all 4)

I've got nearly all of the works of the Coen Bros., Steven Spielberg, Terry Gilliam, Michael Mann, David Fincher, Ridley Scott, Steven Soderbergh and Oliver Stone. Lots of Hitchcock, Lean, Kurosawa and Romero too.

Spielberg 8
Bay 5
Zemeckis 4
Cameron 4
Rami 3
R Scott 3
