I know you're being facetious, Phil. But no court would consider what happened consensual. Both in terms of her mental clarity (she had been doped up on drugs since 11) and in her age (she was 19 when she first became aware of the incest, but says it may have happened much earlier).

I don't begrudge others their fun, joke away. Just not interested in doing it myself in this case. Sorry if I broke your views of me and how I spend my time on CHUD, but stereotypes are a bitch.

But you're right that as far as I know Ryan didn't dabble in incest. He was smart enough to leave Tatum alone and bang away on her friend Melanie Griffith at age 13 instead.

And that definitely goes for Oprah too: On her show, she prompted Mackenzie Phillips to cut right to the chase and cough up the incest story right quick, lest her audience assume this was another cut-and-dry “how I got sober” narrative and change the channel. And of course, as with anything Oprah does, it was all under the auspice of “confronting our pain so we can learn from it.” But what, exactly, did we learn today from this shitstorm, other than that John Phillips was probably the worst father in the world (which, you know, we already knew that), Mackenzie Phillips has a book for sale, and that Oprah—like our entire oversharing society—pretends to be sympathetic when really she’s just acting as a classy surrogate for her audience’s gawking? And will this finally be the nadir of the celebrity memoir, or—as some have already half-jokingly speculated—just the bar everyone else has to clear from now on? The idea that Mackenzie Phillips endured what she says she did is certainly tragic; that still we’re finding new, unnerving ways to turn confronting that tragedy into entertainment may be equally so.

What may have happened to Phillips was reprehensible. Let's see what she does next, or if this was just because she had a book coming out.

It's also bizarre to me that you and others think I get off on "celeb suffering". My interest in celeb gossip is purely in jest. I haven't thought about what my "line" is, but generally I don't post about celeb's kids (save for making fun of their names) or physical abuse (despite your assertion that I post all things Lohan, she's been a cutter for years and I've stayed away from that topic; and again, rape doesn't really do it for me).

Not sure why I don't have the same set of standards for drug and alcohol abuse, but as a party girl myself I can see the humor in getting shit-tanked and getting caught doing stupid shit. That's what 20-year-olds do. I have no doubt Britney, Lindsay, Paris and their ilk will get their shit together. There are plenty of examples of celeb wild children that have done so (Drew, Keifer, RDJ, etc.)

So yeah, I don't take this shit seriously. I find amusement in pop culture whores (i.e., those who need to be constantly in the spotlight) and like to do so with like minded Chewers (and there are plenty). Gossip has always had its detractors, but I'm truly baffled why celeb gossip gets bashed constantly by certain Chewers, yet the hundreds of threads (particularly in the Misc Culture forum) of Chewers making fun of people with disabilities, fucked up diseases, and horrific tragedies is par for the course. CHUD is snarky through and through; no one gets special treatment.
