Law & Order Multiverse 2009-2010

So Michael Scofield is (regularly?) on The SUV. He's giving his traditional un-nuanced performance, this time as an a-hole cop who beats suspects and witnesses on the regular. I was not impressed. Also, Christine Lahti looks like she's had some work done. Hargitay still looks awesome. Oh, and no one is fazed by the annoying, psycho CSI guy from last year.

Mothership starts on Friday and dramatic announcer guy promises it to be amazing 20th season. McCoy is going to indict the Bush Administration!
Wasn't it last Friday? I saw something last Friday where he goes after the governor that he was butting heads with in the season finale.
McCoy? The Bush Administration? Scofield on the Rape Show? The return of Guy Patterson as skeezy Fake Eliot Spitzer? I must get caught up!

My cable box says the premiere is this Friday, some case about a veteran who gets iced. Last week was probably the finale where McCoy and Cutter go after skeezy Governor hardcore and get him to resign. That was a really good finale.
Wait, the resignation episode was the finale? I thought the episode before that was the finale. Whoops.
Were this any other series moving to Friday night, I'd be writing the obituary. But L&O ain't going anywhere - especially with Leno's numbers taking the kind of nose dive that they have. My only "issue" is I don't have DVR (I know...I know...), can't get the DVD/VCR combo to record off my television and I'm not usually home on Fridays at that time.
The only one of these I watch anymore is Law & Order: CI which has been fairly decent. It'll be interesting to see who they replace 'Wheeler' with since the actress is supposedly not returning. They've mentioned Saffron Burrows but that's a pretty horrible choice.

Oh wtf. I like Goldblum and all but it seems like the writers have no idea what to do with him. He's super restrained in his role. It's like they just took all of Noth's cases and inserted his name, because his character is so flat sometimes. I want them to let the Goldblum loose.

Anyways, I don't know if I'd keep watching if Da Noff isn't coming back.
Wow, without Sherlock Goren, the show's lost its appeal.

How is Law and Order: UK? Hmm, does it take place in the same multiverse?
And the countdown to CI getting shit-canned officially begins...

It's pretty fun and the cast is top-notch. Ben Daniels does a solid job as the lead prosecutor, and the two cops (Jamie Bamber and another guy) are great. The show does an excellent job at capturing the black humor of the original; Bamber looks like Bratt and acts like Orbach -- always fun.

It's also interesting to see how they adapt the cases from the original to incorporate the nanny state aspects (like massive closed-circuit tv) of L&O in the UK.
WTF Dick Wolf. Why mess up such a good thing. And Bogosian too. He was pretty good as the Captain.
For me, procedurals break down like this:

Actual high-quality shows = Law & Order

Watchable, decent shows = CSI, Numbers, Bones

Then everything else.

It's a bit disappointing to see the original L&O get dumped and burned off on Fridays, but I take solace that it's still a damn fine show 20 years in. The premiere's 'Jack tilting at windmills' story was well told, and drew some nice parallels between Jake's likely fate and that of the show itself. And their string of casting decent actresses who are smoking hot is like DiMaggio's hitting streak - it will never be matched.
L&O was burned off to Fridays about three years ago and that resulted in it almost being shit-canned. But NBC wants to break Gunsmoke's record and (like the Jay Leno Show) it can be produced cheaper than other shows they have. The flagship isn't going anywhere.
As long as the ADA's stay hot, I'm not complaining. SVU is on thin ice here. Is Cabot coming back?
As someone who hasn't watched Law and Order in a while can someone tell me when Jack McCoy became Mr. Legal Ethics.

Last time I was watching Jack was opening asking witnesses not to fly to america to testify because it would hurt his case.
Oh shit, Mr. Prezbo and Francis Wolcott are playing pedos in an upcoming episode of The Rape Show.

I read she's coming back for the fifth episode until they can find a permanent replacement. Unless she doesn't want to commit to the show, I have no clue why they would let her have the job back permanently (especially after last season's disaster).

But stretched out Christine Lahti's character is at least interesting for now.

Also I read Belzer is appearing as Munch on the French version of Criminal Intent, upping his record.

Not to say SVU has been great the past few seasons, but having end of the show deaths in station two weeks in a row? Put some effort in, guys.
I think Belzer's been on French Criminal Intent a couple of times already.

Three weeks if you count the massacre from Annoying CSI Guy in the finale last year!

I also want to give props to the writers from coming up with increasingly ridiculous website names throughout the years. TastySugar.com? Yes.
Last nights episode was really great; its good to see the real life "Hipster Grifter" story get worked into the L&O universe.

It was pretty high on melodrama but, yeah, I really liked it. I'm also surprised to see them dedicating time to a personal story rather than strictly casework. I figured they'd leave that kind of stuff to The SUV.
While we wait for the inevitable Letterman blackmailing being done, McCoy and the gang will take on Jon & Kate according to New York Post. And played by Andre lookalike John Gaffigan to boot.
But Gaffigan already played the spineless cemetery/crematorium manager in Criminal Intent. I'm outraged!
Jim Gaffigan playing a bad guy? I don't think I can even see this without laughing.

He also played a child molester in an "SVU" episode. Munch and Fin briefly suspect him in this particular case, but he turns out not to be the one they're actually after, so he's not in it for long after he's cleared.
Gaffigan was actually on Criminal Intent twice as different characters.

Ray Curtis (aka Benjamin Bratt) will return for a guest-spot on the flagship as per EW. I liked him during his 90s tenure, but...Meh. I'm still holding out to see Michael Moriarty's Ben Stone return instead.

Cool.

I'd love to see a full on reunion episode sometime next season when they break the record.

Anyone watch Rape Show this week? Kiddie porn episodes are always the most creepy. I felt like I needed a shower after it was over. Dillahunt was so slimy.

So it's "Controversial Topics" week in the Law & Order multiverse. Mothership took on abortion tonight. It was infuriating, naturally, but at least the jury came back with the correct verdict.

But I still think the baby the doctor killed was Brady material in the first place. I'm a little fuzzy on all of the case law there, though.
That was "old school early 90s" L&O. Very good. Liked how Cutter was able to turn off his personal politics in the courtroom.
Knowing Moriarty is batshit crazy IRL makes watching reruns all the better.

Orbach, Bratt, Waterston and Hennessey has always been my favorite lineup. Glad to see some Rey Curtis.

Sadly, I spent most of the hour doing my awful Rosie Perez impression.

I'm just thrilled that there was a positive ending (or as positive SVU can be).

"I don't want you to cheat on your dad. Besides, I like little girls."

I love Garret Dillahunt so much. He's versatile, but he's been pigeonholed as playing creepy guys, slimeballs, and murderers. Yet his variations on that note are always so good.

I went into this episode thinking "I like Rosie Perez," and was promptly reminded that "no, no I do not like Rosie Perez."

And is Hargatay pregnant again?

Fun Fact: While L&O mothership only has one more season to beat Gunsmoke's record for longest-running primetime drama in the U.S., the Simpsons has already broken its record as longest running fictional program. However, "The Bill," the British cop show, is the longest-running primetime drama in the world, as it's been on the air since 1983.

CI Spoiler. Doesn't 100% spill the beans, but still...

From that article-

Quote:
And here’s something you might not know. Richard Belzer’s Det. Sgt. John Munch came over from another show, “Homicide: Life on the Streets.” That show was created by Barry Levinson and Tom Fontana. They owned the Munch character, but waived all rights to him — including royalties. Ten years later, Fontana jokes, he wishes maybe he hadn’t signed it all away. Belzer is still on the show and going strong!
Who DOESN'T know that at this point? I figured Friedman wrote at dunce-level when he was at Fox News because he was writing to his audience.
Eh....should we categorize this as an up-grade or down-grade?
I think it's about even until we see how she is in the role.

I do not however lke the idea of "the show taking a lighter tone". I think it was fine where it was.
I can only hope we get at least one case where D’Onofrio and Goldblum work together.

Hmmm.. hard to say. I'd say a definite upgrade from Sheridan, probable downgrade from Bogosian.

So it's Letterman by way of Kathie Lee? Fun. The direct "ripped from the headlines" are always good for a laugh and a great guest spot or two. See: Chevy as Mel Gibson, Busey as Robert Blake.

Also, Goldblum's new partner should clearly be Damien Lewis as Charlie Crews. Clearly.

I love the "ripped form the headlines" episodes! Some argue that it's lazy writing, but I always look forward to them. Busey as Robert Blake was one of my favorite ones, as well as Kristy Swanson as Anna Nicole. Looking forward to the "Letterman Lesbian" one. I mean, okay - Letterman did wrong, he apologized, he's trying to make right. But let's face it, these celebs need to watch their behavior if they don't want to wind up in a L&O episode.

I basically want the show to become Raines and Crews in NYC.
Wow even Larroquet (and his wandering accent) couldn't save last night's shit fest.

Cabot's cross on McGill was horrific, even for Law and Order standards.

SVU has been awful for awhile now. Thank God for the mothership.
