Holy shit.

That was funny.

Cool Dad reminds me of a combination of Dwight and Michael. "Sorry, buddy. It's on the calendar."

And the Circle of Life moment was damn funny.

Good shit. Worth checking out.

"Lily. Isn't that going to be hard for her to say?"

The night vision in the pantry destroyed me.
i saw this on a jet blue flight of all places last week.

Pretty impressed.

I apparently agree with you.

I'm gonna see how this show plays out. Though how far are we meant to take the "fake doc" conceit? They do debriefs, there's hidden cameras in the pantry, but in any and all other scenes they seem completely unaware of a camera crew. I feel like they should pick one or the other. And the one they should pick is "not copying the fake doc angle."
I agree, but The Office is kind of like a big deal right now, so I can see the networks having something to do with the "fake doc" angle.

Really, really enjoyed it.

Loved it when the security guard thought Ed O'Neil was a mall walker. Bedazlled hats are always funny.

Cool Dad is awesome. "Lilly? How is she going to pronounce her name?"
Honey, where's the baby oil?

By the bedside tabl...I don't know where it is.
Good pilot, seems promising.
Yeah, hilarious. Really smart writing. Loved all the "gay" friend names. And Ed O Neil was amazing, as usual.

Was Julie Bowen supposed to be pregnant for the show? They worked pretty hard trying to cover her belly. And was the middle kid Judd Appatow's girl?

Fuck me. When Phil went from hugging the shit out of his wife to a pointless eye cover, I lost my shit. And he was, while still being completely hilarious, a lot less Michael this week.

"Maybe that was your dad teaching you a lesson."

"I taught some random kid a lesson by stealing his bike!"

"My dad killed a bear once." "Was it sitting in the passenger seat?"

Really enjoying this show.
Its funny, but something seems missing.

Laughter during any of the scenes with the gay couple and Lilly.

Liking the show a lot so far, but it seems to drag whenever it focuses on them. Hopefully thats only temporary.
The gay couple is a little bit lame.
I'm not the biggest fan of the gay couple, but I enjoy their scenes well enough. The Meryl Streep bit was good for the "She could be cast as Batman and she wouldn't be miscast." Also liked the bit with Mitchell stealing the baby's blocks and the cringe that came with finding out he was being videotaped.

"My culture takes great pride in physical labor,"
"That's why I hire people from your culture"

I'm also glad to see that it's doing quite well in the ratings. It'll be refreshing not to have to read lines about "critics love it, but audiences haven't embraced it".
All of the couples are a blast to watch. It was a great episode, the Merryl Streep as Batman line was great.
Ed O'Neill is the breakout star of every damn thing he's involved with.
"I was in a plane crash..."

"I didnt want to mess with his head so I told him it was his twin sister who died."

3 for fucking 3.
I loved the end credit bit for this one, especially the 'what the fuck?' look on Ed O'Neill's face, that was great.
Yeah, that was great.
Best new show of the season.
There's something...I don't know, something that isn't hitting me right. There has been at least a moment or two in each episode that was pretty great, but at the same time if the show was canceled today, I wouldn't really miss it. I like Ed O'Neill, mostly for his reactions to shit, and the kid (Manny, is it?) is good for a chuckle pretty consistently, and aside from the dad being a caricature there's nothing I don't like about it but I can't yet say I am a fan of the show.
The dad is pretty over used, but he sells it in just the right way.

Same here. This was the first episode for me and so far only Sofia Vergara made me chuckle a bit. Might give it a couple more eps, but it mainly makes me want to watch Arrested Development again.

I agree . . . the show is funny, but it feels like just another show. It's well-done, and an above-average example of a genre that is too often mired in mediocrity, but I'm not eager to watch it like I am the great comedies.
Caught up with this on Hulu. Fairly charming show, even though I despise precocious children in comedies.
God help me, I like Manny.

Manny is the little Colombian kid, right?

Anyway, the child stroking his fake goatee had me in stitches. Plus him burning a fucking bike. Awesome.

Still loving this. Fuck the haters. The gay dudes are great fun. "So make a note, bitches." "...pentaGRAMA!"

And that song. Wow. That song.
There's a gun in the footlocker in the garage. If I ever say "no" to that question, use it on me.
I'm not a sitcom guy by any means, I mean I love The Soup cause of Joel McHale and I still have yet to watch Community. However, I have been watching this mostly cause of the interaction of the various couples and I have enjoyed it immensly. So I will continue to TiVo and catch up when i can. Plus it has Sophia Vergara and holy shit what straight guy in his right mind wouldn't want to watch her prance around!!
I don't know how this is from the same guys behind Stacked, Back to You and Just Shoot Me. Did they sell their souls to the devil in exchange for talent? Whatever they did it worked, because I fucking love the hell out of this show.

The stars are falling from the sky

And you’re the reason why

The moon is shining on your face

And I finally think it found its place

Chorus:

Cuz maybe baby

I just wanna do you, do you

Do you wanna do me, do me?

Underneath the moonlight, moonlight

tonigh…

And now we’re hiding in my car

I let you see my scars

Escape the dark for just one night

Your heart makes me explode with light

– Chorus –

Baby maybe

Maybe I will steal you, steal you

Just so I can feel you, feel you

Maybe that will heal you, heal you

On the inside

Underneath the willow tree

wearing nothing else but me…
I downloaded that song and it now resides in my ipod.
Yeah, this show makes me laugh. It's a weird mix/formula but it's working on me.
Funniest show on tv right now.
And i'm not kidding.

The Dick Butkus thing was great.

And I laughed really, really, really goddamn hard when the baby was held around the corner. "Do I? DO I?"

You betcha.

Even the pool scene, which I thought would end up being corny when it started, put a smile on my face.

I think its cause you cant really go wrong with those two women in wet clothes, but still...
I agree, it was a very corny moment. But you really buy into them being a family and their interactions are pretty spot on. One of the best cast series in a long long time.
I have not been hooked into a TV show in a long time, but this one has got me. Great group of characters, even the kids are interesting.
I have to echo Tati's hyperbolic love. I can't think of any other comedy (at least in recent years) that has started off so strong and stayed that way week after week (hopefully I didn't just jinx it).

"Claire says that you can be part of the problem or part of the solution, but I think you can be both."
They need to start dressing Gloria in much more tighter and revealing outfits.
Dear Chewers,

Thanks for talking this show up. I watched the pilot and, even though I thought it was funny, it didn't really grab me. But this thread kept going so I caught up with the show on Hulu over a lazy weekend. Holy crap, it's hilarious.

Exploding with light,
gravedigger
I also caught up with this due to this thread. I have to say the show borders on relying way too much on stereotypes, but it has a heart that always elevates the material above the cheap jokes. If viewers come away with the lesson of tolerance, it more than makes up for any misgivings I may have about certain portrayals. Also, the "cool" dad is too funny for me to quit this show. Man, he's great.
been watching and LOVING this show.

Ty Burrell is a fucking superstar. his portrayal of the father is perfect in every way.

I know ed o'neill has been getting a lot of press for the show, but Ty Burrell is the reason I keep tuning in.
Cameron stole the episode with the costumes, the 12 eggs and the asian heritage.

Ed O'Neil's line about Batman killed me.
I thought this was the weakest episode yet, although I'm a sucker for a "guy suddenly getting run over" gag.
It was, but it was still funny. And yeah, that run over was great.
This episode was supposed to be the 3rd of the season, if anyone's wondering why the kids are only just going back to school here (but were in school in previous episodes). The lesser quality of this one also explains why it was moved back.

Plenty of funny though.
Weakest? Maybe it was the wine but I thought this was great.

The show can do no wrong at this point as far as Im concerned.
I loved the whole parking lot scene when they locked Lily in the car. (Paraphrasing)

Cameron SCREECHING with the garbage can "I'm gonna break the window!!!!" There is no way to explain the pitch of his voice when he's doing that.

Mitchell to Onstar: "We locked our baby in the car, and are being JUDGED!"

Onstar: "Sir, tell your wife to calm down, will have it open in a minute."

Mitchell to Onstar: "That's actually a man"

Onstar: "Really?"

ETA: Oh, and Cameron's stuff when they got it open. "How did they do that? Was that from space?"
was that burrell who went over the van? or a stuntman? that was some A+ physical comedy
post #50 of 246

It's a stunt man. I rewound to look because I was almost certain it was him. The little jog up the front of the car was fantastic.

The weakest episode of the bunch, but still damn good. Cameron's screaming had me in stitches.
