Cigarette bill signed into law

No more flavored cigarettes except menthols, no cloves bigger warning labels. I don't smoke, but I was wondering how folks felt about this. Is this a necessary piece of legislation or is it a limiting of personal freedom? Do flavorings make cigarettes more enticing? Discuss.

Well, that puts the kibosh on those bacon-flavored cigs I've been developing.

The gov'ts attitude towards cigarettes is unadulterated fucking bullshit.

Either make them illegal (because that'll work) or let them do what they want.

I don't really give a shit, but I smoke on occasion. I might as well start saying that instead of "No, I quit", since I nearly bought a pack and lit up this afternoon in a fit of rage at life and I'll probably end up lowering my inhibitions enough to do it again.

Why couldn't it be both?

I'm a smoker and trying to quit. I appreciate the help. If they banned menthol I'd be finished for good.

Are flavored cigarillos like swisher sweets banned as well?

ETA Seems they aren't.

If the government really cares about health, flavored stuff should be the first to be banned. The tobacco companies know the additives will hide the taste anyway, so they use the foulest shit imaginable. I'm speaking from first hand experience. Stay away from anything flavored.

I feel utterly horrified by this. What gross over reaching of government. I am 23 years old, if I want to smoke a flavored cig, no one should stop me. It's illegal to sell to kids, period. It should be on parents to keep kids from smoking, not banning every thing int he world a kid might want to try. They say "causes cancer" right on the package. They are illegal to sell to minors. Anything beyond that is on the parents. We should not be legislating in place of parenting.

If they want a cigarette bill, how about a bill that makes cigs with anything other than tobacco and natural flavors illegal? How are Marlboros still legal with all the toxins they put in them? But strawberry flavored smoke? My god, cant have that!

This is one of the things I am most angry about that has come from this congress.

I'm pretty annoyed about the decision to ban certain types of cigarettes -- my god, I agree with Princess Kate -- but this bill does have some good parts to it, like this:

Quote:
Requires tobacco companies and importers to reveal all product ingredients and seek FDA approval for any new tobacco products.

# Limits advertising that could attract young smokers.

# Requires cigarette warning labels to cover 50 percent of the front and rear of each pack, with the word warning in capital letter.
