A Drop Of Nelson's Blood: The Rum Appreciation Thread

Richard Dickson's alcohol gift thread got me thinking, we have a scotch appreciation thread, so why don't we have a rum one? Seems like more than a few of you enjoy your rum and I'm always looking for more recommendations as I've only been getting into it in the past year or so.

So, have at it! What's your favourite? What are you drinking at the moment? Spiced or regular? How many Zombies can you put away in an evening? And so forth.

I recently got a bottle of Pyrat XO Reserve for my birthday and have been loving it. I've also got some Captain Morgan's Spiced Gold which does the job but isn't the best - any suggestions for a better spiced rum?

I'd like to know the appeal of spiced rum. I am an ardent clear and gold kinda guy.

Some of the best stuff I have had I bought in 2001 and still have a little left over. Barbancourt 15 year. The Agostura 1919 I mentioned in Dickson's thread was given as a birthday gift a few years back.

I am a 10 Cane fiend except it does get a little pricey for breaking it out amongst friends.

Share a recipe as well.

Cuba Libre Improved
1 part Bacardi Superior rum
1/2 part Bombay Sapphire gin
1 dash Angostura bitters
1/4 part lime juice
cola

The above from Paul Harrington's cocktail book(worth every penny) and new website.

*EDIT* At the "moment" I am going cheap and girly.

Into a regular household blender:
6 oz can of frozen limeade concentrate
Top off with frozen strawberries, sliced or whole
8 oz Bacardi
Blend until smooth

I got really sick off of Bacardi 151 in college (long story...), and that kinda killed me on rum. That was almost 20 years ago, and I've really only recently dabbled in rum based drinks again. I'll be following this thread.

For pure, unrefined rum pleasure, I go with Gosling's Black... bar none.

Captain Morgan's is really only good for the entertaining adverts in print and on TV. Sailor Jerry's Spiced Rum is so far above CM, it's like ropes on the Goodyear Blimp.

It's rainy, but after two shots of Colombian rum, Viejo de Caldas with some friends everything is fine. nuff said.

Sailor Jerry's a nice beverage. Spiced, vanilla and lime.
