Jimmy Cliff

I wanted to include a woman but this is a tough line-up this year.

Exactly. These are the groups who help legitimize the Hall by being in it.
I'm a full blown Chili Pepper apologist, so I am rooting for them to achieve this completely useless milestone, but still no Cure? Smiths? Depeche Mode?
No Rush either. Again.

KISS and ABBA are the only ones that I feel strongly enough about.
Speaking of KISS, their new single 'Modern Day Delilah' ain't as bad as I expected. The chunky riffs and thumping bassline remind me of a lesser 'Black Diamond'. If someone didn't tell me that Ace and Peter weren't in the band anymore, not sure if I would've noticed hearing this, to be honest.
Way too early for the Chile Peppers. I don't even LIKE Kiss and ABBA and I'd rather see them in there.

Cliff's probably my favorite, but he really only has one 'important' album to his credit, and he only did four songs on it...

The Stooges, The Chantels, and The Hollies seem like the obvious other picks, but something tells me the latter two cancel each other out.
I'd switch out KISS for Darlene Love in Eileen's lineup (personal preference more than influence, I'll admit), but I agree with her, otherwise.

The Hollies are tremendously underrated*, and I give them the edge over ABBA mainly because their heavily harmonized pop came first. It's a shame that we've gotten to the point that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are eligible, but one of the key British Invasion bands hasn't made it yet.

* Not just the early hits like "Bus Stop," "Carrie Ann," and "King Midas in Reverse," but "The Air That I Breathe" is basically the blueprint for Radiohead's "Creep."

Once you get past the question of whether there is anything LESS rock and roll than a "Hall of Fame," my personal choices would probably be:

The Chantels
The Hollies
Darlene Love
Laura Nyro
The Stooges

Others on the list may have been more "important," but since my vote doesn't affect anything, anyway...

I can see someone thinking they don't deserve it, but how is it too early?

ABBA
Jimmy Cliff
Genesis
KISS
The Stooges

Those aren't all stricly my favorites. Influence is a major consideration in earning a spot in the Hall of Fame as well. I'd have Red Chili Peppers in place of one of those, but it really is too early for them. I can't stand KISS, but I guess they've earned the honor. Jimmy Cliff I have there partly due to personal preference. To me, he's one of the most talented acts on the list. I'm not familiar enough with The Hollies to say a lot about them except I appreciate what I've heard by them.

Duplicate post. Please ignore.
I thought we were picking who would be good consensus choices for the Hall, not who we like as musicians.

The ones I would pick:

Jimmy Cliff
Peppers
Stooges
I guess I have to go

ABBA
The Hollies
Laura Nyro
The Stooges
LL Cool J

Not a very inspiring list of nominees though.
Chili Peppers are a first-year inductee, no question. Abba pretty much has their slot sewn up. Kiss and Genesis will probably get in as well. I bet Love rides the Ellie Greenwich love into her own induction. Summer is the queen of disco, so she'll get in one of these years. I'd say the Stooges, but I wonder if they're worried about a repeat of when they inducted the Sex Pistols and got called a piss stain. LL could get a surprise induction, as there's a lot of unexplainable love for that guy. Nyro would make me happy, but isn't going to happen. Same with the hollies.

<insert obligatory whining about "They nominated LL Cool J but still not Randy Newman or Warren Zevon?" here>
post #17 of 45
I took a look at upcoming eligibility years. We are a scant 2 years away from a bunch of "Oooooh, are Slash and Axl both going to show up?" stories. Then the following year is a pretty strong class (Jane's, Pixies, PE, Soundgarden, and NWA. and Tiffany).
Not to mention all the guys who haven't been inducted yet.

A more fun game to play is who gets in on their first year. Guns and Roses and later Nirvana and Pearl Jam are a given. Of the ones you mentioned, I would probably say Public Enemy and NWA both get in their first year. Pixies might have to wait a year or two.
Pixies are with The 'Mats and Husker Du and Sonic Youth and maybe Dinosaur Jr in the "If The Cure didn't make it, how can we" group. All are fairly influential, yet The Cure were way more popular. I don't see any of them sneaking in while The Smiths and Depeche Mode and The Cure can't get in themselves.
That's really true, although all those guys you mentioned will get in eventually. I don't see how Sonic Youth doesn't get in.
Genesis has to be in there. Has to be.

Not really unexplainable.

For "Big Ole Butt", man deserves keys to the kingdom. (How did Mix-A-Lot steal that thunder?)

A lot of jokes about his G.O.A.T. crown, but in his prime he was a spectacular M.C. (something like a phenomenon). His first album Radio-a top 10 Hip-Hop all-timer-was as fresh as anything hitting at the time; an extension of Run DMC,giving the young, black teenager a voice not punk and radical, but sexy and exciting, not unlike Elvis '56.

If as an album artist, he could never quite top the debut-Mama Said Knock You Out comes close-he did churn out an impressive resume of pop singles for over two decades. ("Going Back To Cali", "Jinglin' Baby (Remix) being my faves).

For most of his career, undervalued (even mocked by his peers) and overshadowed by the likes of the Beasties and Public Enemy, he's the member of the Original Strength Posse most deserved to follow Run DMC into the Hall. Props due.

(Best diss record ever? "Jack the Ripper", hands down. He crushed Moe Dee!)
I stand corrected. I admit that I'm not that familiar with his work beyond "Mama Said Knock You Out." I'll have to correct that.

No, thank you!

I'll add to the love for Iggy & the boys. "I Wanna Be Your Dog" still a pure angry, shot of adrenaline.

Fun House is the great album that never seems to get talked about.

The Stooges
The Stooges
The Stooges
The Stooges
The Stooges

Except of course that whenever it gets talked about, its in unironic and usually unchallenged (at least outwardly) "it is the best rock album ever" tones. I mean, you might disagree, but you don't really bother with a rebuttal.
If The Stooges don't make it in this year, the hall might as well close up shop.

Of course ABBA and KISS will probably make it just to reaffirm how stupid and middle of the road the HOF is.
ABBA is fucking great.

Kiss, not so much.
Yeah, for all the jokes it's easy to forget what a great pure pop group abba really was.
If ABBA gets in, wonder if there's any chance they'd perform.

What the hell is there to apologize for? They're fucking awesome ... well, I can see how Anthony Kiedis can put some people off... But they have, in my opinion, the best rythmm sections in all of modern rock. And on of the best guitarist's on the face of the earth.

And dammit, I like Anthony's lyrics. I mean they're completely silly (and some times dorky and dumb), stream-of-conscious improvisations a lot of the time. But that's why I like 'em. And you, his voice has gotten a LOT better in the past 8 years or so.

I don't know why people rag on them all the time. They really are a great band and have been on of my favorites since literally the 2nd grade.

Yeah, if "God Gave Rock 'n Roll To You" isn't a good enough reason to pass KISS up, then I don't know what is.

EDIT: and I dig KISS. But god damn... God Gave Rock 'n Roll To You... Seriously. God damn...

Genesis deserves to get in on sheer longevity.

Hell, it's not like they wrote it or anything. And I'd bet that Bill and Ted soundtrack was the biggest payday they'd had in a while.

True.

And I guess it is better than that Paul Stanley single from a year or two ago.

"Live to win!

Till ya die!

Till the light dies in your ay-e-eyes!

LIVE TO WIN!"

Fucking hysterical!

What would be great is if Bjorn Again performed in their stead.
And your inductees are Jimmy Cliff, Genesis, The Hollies, The Stooges and ...

ABBA.
I find this thread's lack of faith in Darlene Love disturbing.
Well, the Genesis induction means Collins and Gabriel get to join the two-timers club eventually.
Abba?
While I'm disappointed that KISS isn't in there, I'm really not surprised. The nomination itself was nothing but the HoF throwing the fans a bone. Like Rush, they'll never get in there.
KISS will get in, Rush however? Sorry Judas. I think it's an injustice too.
No Peppers induction means no long overdue reunion with John Frusciante.
Rush, Kiss, and Chili Peppers will all get in eventually.
Really cool to see Jimmy Cliff get in.
