Hip Songs for Hip Infants

A couple of friends are expecting their first child next month. I'd like to put together or buy a couple of CDs for them of fun, eclectic music that they could play for the baby. I've got some ideas (Born to Add), but I'd be curious to hear if anyone has any suggestions from stuff they played for their kids.

I have been thinking about doing something like this for a long time. I have been trying to think of fun songs that kids would like that adults would like too. Nelly the Elephant was the first song that came to my mind. I know Sugar Hill Gang has a kids album out too, but I haven't heard any of it so I can't speak to it's quality.

I have friends who love the children's albums by They Might Be Giants: No, Here Come the ABCs, and Here Come the 123s.

Track down Sandra Boynton's Philadelphia Chickens. It's a book/CD combo of silly catchy songs with some mighty star power behind the mic.

Favorite is 'Busy Busy Busy' with Kevin Kline.

Yeah, I've got a few "star powered" albums already (Stay Awake, For the Children, etc.), but I'll have to check the rest out.

We absolutely LOVE these. My 2 year old daughter has been listening to them since before she was 1 year old. Here Comes Science just came out as well, and it is pretty great from what I've heard so far. Takes some shots at the anti-intellectualism movement in this country as well (not that little kids would notice).

All but "No!" also come with DVDs that have music videos for most (maybe all) of the songs on there as well as extras including live performances and whatnot.

Seconded. Also, anything in the Rockabye Babyseries. MrMushnik bought us the Radiohead and Pink Floyd discs when our little one was born, and I think I enjoyed it almost as much as the baby.

I used to play Wish You Were Here to put my niece to sleep.

Woo Hoo by the 5,6,7,8s is a fav for my 2 year old right now. I second the Rockaby Baby series for a little one. I picked up http://www.amazon.com/Saturday-Morni.../dp/B000002OYG when I was still in school (10+ years ago) and I still listen to it. Great album.

They Might Be Giants has this ground covered.

"You Are My Little Bird" by Elizabeth Mitchell. No other kids' record has a (good!) Velvet Underground cover on it, and she won't drive the parents insane.

I'll second both this one and TMBG (especially Here Comes Science).

And Backyardigans songs are really pretty good, too.
