60´s Draft: Discussion

I hope I am not pissing in Kirbys yard here but I think that a discussion thread is in order with the first picks taken. And a nice one Sackley. Or Ben. You could have chosen way worse as the very first drafter this time around.

Have at.
Cheers Jan!

I actually thought it was ineliegible until about 30 seconds before drafting started. Thank Christ I checked.

One of my favourite films of all time, if not my very favourite when all is said and done and a perfect start to my proposed theme. We'll see about that.
Nobody take my first choice plz. K? thx.
Definitely not, Jan. Appreciated. Slept in today.
And nice start.
Off to a fine start gentlemen.

Once Upon A Time In The West
is arguably Leone's best western. Personal preferences dictate it take second place for me. But, truth be told, it's an amazing piece of work. Henry Fonda is one of the most cold-blooded motherfuckers of all time.

I've actually never seen The Battle Of Algeirs. Time to correct that mistake I guess.

I've always wished I could have been around for the initial release of Planet Of The Apes. It's become such a familiar story by now, that people probably don't realize what its initial impact must have been like for people. I imagine walking out of that movie in '68 must have been akin to how we all felt walking out of The Sixth Sense. It's just such a great "Holy Shit!" ending.

These picks are all great so far. Please no one screw me. I narrowed it down to some very specific choices for myself. But I think I'm in BIIIIIG trouble.

'The Battle of Algiers' just shot to the top of my MUST SEE list. The other picks cannot be argued against, really.

Kirby, do you need somebody to make a CHOSEN list?
I think there are very few places you could go where you participate in a movie picking game, pick in the fifth slot, and know there's no way you're getting Once Upon A Time In the West. CHUD is such a place, and that's why I come here.

Good picks all around so far.

Do that asap. Glorious, and frightenly timely as well, movie. But don´t make any plans for afterwards. Not exactly an uplifiting pub crawling movie. But more than worth the time spent and the discussions afterwards. Highly recommended indeed.
Hurry up, Henry Hill!
It's no Red Dawn!

Seriously, impressive choices so far. Nice to see a few curve balls already.

Groovy!
Not sure if I am remembering this right, but I think Henry has been known to make a late pick or two.

Yeah. I HEAVILY debated between 3 movies, but Algier's a timeless masterpiece. Hell, it's still used as a training tool by the Pentagon and other military organizations.
I know it goes without saying, but just pre-emptively, can we keep naming/alluding to other films down to zero this time around?

I'm on it. I'll update as I can.
The next group can go. Maybe I need to switch Henry Hill and Anderson.
I had to ninja that. I am still bitter over losing Ran to ET by 3.2 seconds.
I knew it was a fool's hope 2001 might last till 3. Why did I still allow myself to have it?
Well, here's a big one. The fact that I would have hesitated between 2001 and many other Kubricks just show how awesome he was as a filmmaker.
2001 is greatness. But everyone knows that.*

*Except Slater --- I think he was the guy who argued it was boring back in the day.
/busy crossing Point Blank off list/

Oh man!!! Stuck in a meeting and I get blown over, couldn't grab 2001. This draft is ruined for me. Bailey I hate you.
Yeah, that threads just full of the Downs Syndrome innit?
I love the boring parts, I think they're hilarious. Of course my reading of the film is different.
Just to clarify (because I'm stupid): as soon as Ratty posts I'm clear to go, right?
I was hoping Point Blank could last til round 2. I don't know anybody on these boards, but you get a sense of people... I thought strax would go someplace else.

Since then the second bracket is done: Yep.

I didn't see the note, sorry -- all yours, Judas.

Strax grabs my first round pick. I knew it was going to go first round, but not that fast. What a great movie.
Seeing 2001 during revival run in '01 was a dream fulfilled.

Biggest regret of film-going life-not making it to Roadshow showing of Once Upon A Time... at Monument Valley.

Point Blank is awesomeness.

EDIT--did not see Henry's choice coming! The SUPERMAN of the draft?
Sorry, Henry, my bad.
Is West Side Story good? I haven't seen it in so long. I remember hating it, and I wasn't one of those musical hating teenagers.

Correct.
What I love about 2001 is that it's really two movies in one.

One is a razor-sharp, tense outer space thriller. The other is not really a film in the conventional sense... It's just an assault on the senses specifically designed to force you to contemplate humanity.

Only in the 60s could anyone have pulled that off as a hit movie.

But calling it "boring" is beyond the parameters of wrong.

So far my picks are safe. There is really only one (or maybe two) that I feel legitimately concerned about. But that's starting to change.
WSS is terrible.
There's no way that my number 1 pick will last until tomorrow. No way in hell.
Yeah, West Side Story the movie is pretty not-good in spots. It's such a theatrical idea that was a product of its time and collaborators that it's been hard to replicate, and both Bernstein and Sondheim have disavowed/looked askew at the piece from time to time. I really like the score/soundtrack, but not the movie itself.

Point Blank has one of the best Alamo Drafthouse posters, too.
I love 2001, but it's not out of line to call it boring. After the dawn of man stuff there's some shit that really tries your patience. Back in the day the effects were something to marvel at. But ten minutes of a woman walking upsdie down is bullshit by today's standards.
I must say that 2001 is the tits, slow/deliberate parts and all. But…I’d be the first to concede that its meticulousness and precision is part of its overall charm and allure. It’s no real foul if the integral pacing of it isn’t your thing. It’s more understandable with this than perhaps any other popular classic that this might be the one that pushes too far. It’s meant to be that heady, difficult journey of sorts. It’s not like taking a shot at the sumptuous parade of utterly joyous filmmaking of Citizen Kane, so alive with every frame that bursts across the screen; it’s not like calling that picture boring.

That's Round 2, my man, if my rep means anything. Or else Dre might take it.
Look, I think the life in space stuff is inert- but it works for me in a way that maybe only makes sense in retrospect. Maybe Kubrick was enamored of the space age and all that stuff, but for me it functions as satire. We were so focused on the future, it was almost like the square portion of society was looking to technology for enlightenment, and the counter-culture was looking to chemicals; I feel like the movie skewers both as empty pursuits. As I've said before, I think the starchild is a big fuck you- but I don't know anybody else who thinks of the movie this way.
People are not in my headspace when it comes to this draft so far.
Personally, I like the stuff in space. It's slow, but it shows that Clarke and Kubrick really thought about HOW things would work in that kind of environment. It almost plays as a documentary of 'this is what space travel will really look like', and I find it to be pretty fascinating.

Even if you do find that stuff boring, you can sit back and enjoy the beautiful score.
West Side Story in round one? I'm interested to see where the list goes from there.

I'm pretty the rest of my picks will be gone by round two, to be honest, but I know I don't have to worry about Henry stealing them.
Well I'll step up and defend West Side Story. I love the use of actual cityscapes for so much of it. It makes it feel more "real" than the sound stage musicals of the 50s. It really makes NYC feel like a character itself in the film, and lends the film a bit of gravity it wouldn't have otherwise. Plus, it's freakin' Bernstein.
The more I watch it, the more I realize music is the real script for 2001. It says everything the day-to-day nature of the dialogue doesn't. It celebrates how wondrous things are when man puts technology to good use, but its absence underscores how cold, ominous and just plain WRONG things are when HAL enters the film. HAL's last moments being an attempt to sing isnt some happy minor accident: its his, and to a point, mankind's complete lack of a soul being laid out for all to hear. Even the dissonance of the monolith scenes, its only dissonant because its hundreds of powerful voices singing, but with no order to make it harmonic. Which,I've always thought, is why the....whatevers...that made the monolith helped us to begin with. They kinda need us.

For me, if monkeys are in a movie, it's gotta be good.
Any sense of realness conveyed by the locations is seriously undercut by casting 40 year old gay men in clean and pressed clothes as teenage street thugs.
