Austin, TX Trips and Tips

So the final weekend for my 'Jack from Lost golden ticket awesomeness' is this weekend and I'm going on a haaj to Austin, specifically to the Drafthouse. Yes, I understand that I am flying three hours just so I can go see movies I could conceivably see down the street, but everyone talks about it and the situation has presented itself at last. However, I suppose I can't spend all my time there so I was wondering if there was anything else to do in Austin and if anyone wanted to get together for either drinks or a movie?

Barton Springs is a good trip if you want to take a swim. Grab a sandwich from Thunderclouds. If you're staying overnight 6th street isn't bad, but I'm sure Jared or Greg can point you to better spots. If you're at the Alamo on 6th though, no reason not to enjoy 6th. I wish you had dropped this news earlier, been a while since an Austin chewer get together, would have been fun.

You are only a hop skip and a jump away from the holy grail of Shiner. Visit the breweries and drink from the font of Shiner.

Yeah, I kind of didn't finalize plans until last night. The whole 'fly whenever' makes it so you don't have to commit to anything until about 3 days beforehand.

Thanks, guys! I'll be sure to check out some of those things if I get the time.

Another question. In all the places I've been to, I've been trying out the food the place is known for, but I am unsure what cuisine Austin might be famous for. Any hints?

Not necessarily famous but definitely affecting the food culture there. Tex-Mex.

Tex Mex. But Austin Tex Mex is pretty shitty, to be honest. Chuy's is the best of the bunch. I recommend eating from the taco trucks though, seriously. Oh, and go to South Congress and visit the Cupcake truck.

I second what Billy posted.

I recommend:

1) a burrito from Freebirds
2) tacos from Torchy's Tacos
3) ice cream from Amy's
4) maybe something brunchy at Magnolia or Kerby Lane

Isn't ACL Fest this weekend? Town'll be crowded. Watch out for damn DMB fans.

Final question and then I'll be gone: late night stuff. I'm talking super late, open all night kind of things. I have it in mind to kind of not sleep and would greatly like a distraction at like...2 in the morning. Anything going on that you recommend?

Well, as it just so happens, everyone is right: the Drafthouse is "tits". I envy you Austinites, I truly, truly do. What a fantastic theater.

I wish I'd known you were hopping down here, Doc. Glad you enjoyed the Drafthouse. Also, if you ever make it back down here for whatever reason, I've got two words for you: Home Slice. Best pizza in Austin.

I'll give more warning next time. And oh yes, there will be a next time. Hopefully it's not raining like we're in England then. Seriously, felt bad for the ACLers.
