Possibly getting a PS3 soon...

I suddenly find myself with about $350 of store credit at Toys R Us. What better way to use it than to spend it on video games, right?

At first, I thought I would use it towards buying the many new games that I want this fall such as Brutal Legend, Borderlands, MW2, AC2, Dragon Age, etc. However, I'd be getting most of those games regardless of having any store credit to burn. Besides, the amount of credit is a perfect excuse to purchase a PS3, thus completing the trifecta of video game consoles in my house (already have 360 and Wii). I still may go back to the first option, but I am a little afraid of losing (or breaking) the flimsy plastic card at some point, so a large purchase might be a better idea anyway.

So let's just say that I am strongly considering a PS3 at this point in time. The recent price drop and Uncharted 2's imminent release certainly makes it harder to walk away.

So, I was just wanting some suggestions from you guys on what PS3 games should be on my radar. I do have a 360, so I've probably already at least heard of (if not played) multiplatform titles. So I'm probably more interested in the PS3 exclusives. I'd just like to get a slightly better picture of the quality games that are available before I make any large purchases. Call it research or something.

Anyway, I absolutely want to play Uncharted 1 & 2 (they seem to be right up my action/adventure alley), and I am definitely interested in LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm, and Infamous. In the future, I'm looking forward to The Last Guardian and Heavy Rain.

Are the PS3 iterations of Ratchet & Clank that are out any good (I know there's another one coming soon)? Are Resistance 1 & 2 worth looking at? Is Heavenly Sword worth whatever semi-cheap price it is at by now? What kind of a game is Valkyria Chronicles? What other games should I be considering?

On the downloads side, I want to get Fat Princess and at least one of the PixelJunk games (probably Monsters). Wipeout HD also looks like it could be a lot of fun. Are there any other noteworthy downloadable titles on the PSN?

I have liked all different types of games in the past, so I'm open to trying just about anything.
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction = fantastic.
Uncharted 1 & 2 - yes.
LittleBigPlanet - absolutely.
inFamous - yes.

I'm still working on my list, but those are the games I have (not counting downloadables like Flower, Wipeout XL, etc. which are mostly great) that make me really, really, really glad I got a PS3.

ETA: Also, when you have time, pore through the PS3 Thread. Some great recommendations/discussion in there and dontEATnachos apparently has his PS3 cooking him breakfast and doling out handjobs now or something due to all the apps he's rigged with it.

ETAAAA: Wipeout HD, not XL. Derp.

SingStar. Burn Zombie Burn. Uncharted 2.

You'll be set for basically an alcohol-fuelled weekend of awesome.

PJM is great too. Wipeout HD is a must.

I have heard of Flower, but I don't really know much about it. What kind of a game is it?
Kind of a wild Zen puzzle-ish game. Issa purdy and calming.

I have way more fun with The Last Guy than I logically should.

Do yourself a favor: pretend Metal Gear Solid 4 didn't happen. You'll live a longer, happier, fulfilling life that way.

We have got to get a Chewer Wipeout HD tourney together.

The only Metal Gear that I have played was a bit of MGS1 on a friend's PS1 back in the day, and I later played through the entire thing in it's Twin Snakes iteration for the GameCube. I liked it well enough, but I've never played any of the others.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! Keep 'em coming!

Super Startdust HD and High velocity bowling are great PSN titles.

Avoid Worms. It's a sloppy port. Resist the price of Noby Noby boy, it's a play-once-then-ignore kinda game.

Savage Moon's amusing as far as tower defence titles go, and hard as nails. Isn't that a 360 title too though?

EDIT: In response to "are the Ratchet and Clank PS3 titles any good?" The answer is a resounding Yes.

Haha, did you get it elsewhere? Sorry for not PMing you back in time, I thought I wanted to actually try my hand at beating it...but no, no I don't.
First of all I second the recommendations for R & C and Uncharted. Little Big Planet ended up underwhelming me a bit.

If you've got lots of time and not much money, there's a lot of older games you can probably get quite cheap and worth trying. I enjoyed:
- Resistance
- Motorstorm
- Devil May Cry 4
- Heavenly Sword (very short. Maybe just rent this)
- Killzone 2 (I loved this, though many chewers didn't feel the same)

Other games worth trying:
- Fallout 3
- Valkyria Chronicles (really quirky strategy game. Might be your thing)
Sorry, I didn't answer the original questions very well. Ignore the non-exclusive games I mentioned.

Valkyria Chronicles is basically a turn based strategy. But each 'turn' is realtime, as the defenders will fire at your troops as you move them forward. And vice-versa when the opposition moves. The end result is you need to have a good strategic layout of your troops in defense, but move swiftly in offense.

Probably the best recommendation is to track down a gameplay video. It's a good game with a pretty average anime storyline. It also is a time sink IMO. I like it, but I barely have enough time free (with two young kids) to get through the missions.

Grrrr....I hate compatibility issues! I have my 360 hooked up to my computer monitor, so I was planning on doing the same for the PS3. However, the PS3 doesn't have a VGA cable, so it's not nice and easy for me like the 360 was. No matter, I figured that I could just use an HDMI to DVI cable instead, but apparently my monitor is old enough that it doesn't have HDCP, so that option isn't supposed to work either. It does have S-video and composite inputs, but those won't really look very good, and my monitor doesn't have component inputs, unfortunately.

I already have the adapters necessary to hook the audio up to my computer speakers, so it's pretty much just finding an acceptable/not very expensive way to get the video to work.

If I get a PS3, it looks like I would have to suffer with either poor resolution video input that I know will work or a convoluted setup of adapters and/or cables that may or may not work. Perhaps I could suffer for a while until closer to the holidays and maybe I could convince my wife (and scrounge up enough cash) to get an HDTV, but that's not a guaranteed outcome.

Anybody here have experience with hooking up a PS3 to a non-HDCP monitor? I am using a Dell Ultrasharp 2005FPW monitor, FYI. I've tried googling a solution for this, but I keep finding a ton of conflicting information.

Loving my PS3 Slim. Blu-Ray is just an awesome format. But the game selection compared to the 360 is wheak. Cross platform games aside, there are more great exclusives for the Wii than there are for the PS3.

I just got this, but I'm right with you. Strongly recommended.

Demons Souls comes out next week. If you like your RPG's bleak, soul-crushing, and above all, hard as balls, it's a must own.

Aside from that I'd stay with the PS3 exclusives named above. You can't go wrong with Killzone 2, Valkyria Chronicles, or Infamous. VC in particular is a whole lot of fun if you have even a passing interest in turn-based strategy done well. I haven't spent a lot of time with Uncharted, but I plan to remedy that in the next couple of weeks. Warhawk is a lot of fun too if you're at all interested in an online shooter that lets you play as infantry, planes, or tanks.

I have experience trying to play 720p games on a television that support 1080i, but not 720p. And that experience blew. I ended up getting a new LCD television (which I like much better than the old t.v., so a win-win ... I guess ...)

Best 300 you'll ever spend. My recommendations both exclusive or cross-platform:

-Dead Space
-Ninja Gaiden Sigma
-Uncharted 1 and 2
-Resistance 1 and 2
-Fat Princess
-Wipeout XL
-Battlefield 1943

Just want to echo the statements about Blu-ray as well. Incredible, incredible format.
I'll probably get a PS3 next year when GOW3 comes out. Besides Uncharted 2 there really aren't that many exclusives that interest me.
Take the plunge, get a new monitor, Polygon. I'm using a 24" Gateway Monitor for a TV. The picture quality makes most actual HDTVs of the same size look fucking ridiculous, and I paid less than $200 for it.

And I had a friend rent MGS4 for me, Jake. It's not often I have the uncontrollable urge to rip off a man's face and punch the bleeding remnants till I break my hand, let alone have such a desire to do so to a hotshot pretentious game developer, and yet.....
Crash commando on PSN is very worthy of your time. Fat Princess another PSN title that is a pretty cool action/strategy hybrid if your playing with a group of people that know what they are doing.

Resistance 1 & 2 and Killzone 2 are very worthy FPS's for the ps3. For the price you can get them for now, pick em up asap.

Uncharted 1, get this NOW. Play through it before the sequel comes out. Thank me later.
Ok... I'll do it. MGS4 isn't that bad.

The storytelling gets longer and more cringe-inducing as it goes on, but there's some really stellar nuggets of gameplay in there.

If you don't know what Metal Gear Solid is, it's probably best to track down the original (if possible) than start at the 4th one.

That's my exact problem with it. There shouldn't be "nuggets" anywhere. Playing the game makes me feel like a dog gnawing on a desiccated turd shat straight from the ass of a laughing Kojima, and I just keep having to chew away desperately trying to find a sweet kernel of corn.

Depends on your perspective. In several 'Games are art' threads, arguments have been made that cutscenes are ignoreable. The only part of the game worth mentioning is the 'gameplay'. In this case I felt the gameplay was actually brilliant.

IMO, a third level like the first two (competing sides in battle with Snake progressing amongst them) would have cementing the game as a classic. The 'noir' level and the trip down memory lane were nice ideas, but felt a bit like diversions from the 'real' game.

Ultimately I was let down by the game. Snake-eater is top ten of all time for me. In MGS4 I still like the character of Snake, but the story shits itself. Loved playing the playable bits (they are only a 'skip scene' command away).

I mentioned earlier in the thread that the only Metal Gear that I've ever really played was the Twin Snakes on GameCube. I liked it, but not enough to really bump MGS4 above most of these other games, especially Uncharted. I might pick it up for cheap someday, but I doubt I'll really miss it if I don't.

So how are you doing your audio then? Right now, I'm just using boring old computer speakers for my 360, but they work just fine in the small room it is in. I wouldn't want to use them for television though.

Don't get me wrong, I still like Snake too, but when someone actually shits themselves in the game, then yeah, the story's shat itself.

At the moment, I've got a receiver getting optical from the PS3 and 360, but before I bought that, I was using a set of 5.1 computer speakers hooked in through the headphone jack on the monitor via an RCA-to-3.5 adapter. Won't give you "true" surround since Dolby Digital/DTS are impossible, but it's certainly no slouch in the clarity and bass departments, and the (usually) simulated surround does better with Blu Rays than you might expect.

Metal Gear Solid is a hate crime of a game series.

Nah, Snake-eater is an example of what makes video gaming great. You can take your shirt off and walk through a leech infested swamp holding a machine gun, then burn those little leeches off one by one with a cigarette. You can also eat a moldy bat and vomit everywhere. Anyone who hates that, hates life.

Hi there, Stockholm Syndrome.
Metal Gear Solid has fleeting moments - Portable Ops, par example.

Then it becomes inexcusable. It's not even fun when played drunk.

I'd also like to once again draw attention to what I recall being a 3 hour closing cinematic that repeatedly fades to black, only to Columbo back in with "oh and one more thing!"
I mean, if Metal Gear is your argument that games are art, then I guess games are Dadaist.
The videogames nerds that constantly praise Kojima's DEEP, MEANINGFUL storytelling are hilarious. The bondage tentacle villains cry and moan when they're defeated! THIS IS ART GIVE ME MORE. Are you paying attention, Hollywood??

I actually liked *playing* MSG4. The neverending gibberish cutscenes were torture, though.
If you're buying a PS3, buy it for the Uncharted games and uh....the bluray.
I wouldn't say Metal Gear has "deep" meaningful storytelling by any means, in fact it's downright cheesy and long winded at times, but I think there a lot of interesting ideas in it regarding nano-technology, combat, the melding of humans with machines, etc. I didn't mind the long cutscenes, but then again, having played the previous 3, I was expecting it and knew the whole story. If you have played the others and didn't like the cutscenes, I mean what were you expecting from MGS4?

If you haven't played through all 3, however, I can see where the cutscenes would get grating, cause they talk about a lot of shit that happened in the previous games and it will go right over your head.

There was one point in MGS4 where Psycho Mantis(from MGS1) appears and I tried to use the "turn on the second controller so he can't read your mind trick" from MGS1 and Otacon immediately appeared and was like "this is a PS3, you can do that with this technology". I was like "WTF?!?". It's just insane little details like that make Metal Gear a truly unique experience. One of the few games that truly caters to those that have played through all the previous games. It isn't for everyone though.

The gameplay was different in MGS4. I never liked how you couldn't control the camera or move around in first person mode. That's why I tried it out.

I can see that. Of course they released a special edition of MGS3 with improved camera right after I beat it. That one might be worth trying out. I heard it makes the game flow a lot better.

RCA just took up for it, so we can close the book on MGS4 not sucking penis.

There is no flow to a game with three-hour cutscenes.
Since I've already made my case (Gameplay quite good, story telling mostly poor) I'll defer this argument the critical consensus over at Metacritic that has the game at 94.

For comparison:
Resistance - 86
Resistance 2 - 87
Uncharted - 88
Uncharted 2 - 97
Ratchet and Clank - 91
Little Big Planet - 95
Demon's Souls - 89

The video game critical community is prone to hype and over-rating, but a game don't get 94 without being basically enjoyable.

I was just browsing the website for a local computer store, and they have a pretty nice computer monitor for about $200 (complete with HDMI, VGA, and HDCP-compatible DVI inputs). Maybe this will be my best option at the moment as I can use it in a dual-screen setup for my computer. I am an animator, and I use a dual-screen workstation at work all day, so it would be nice to have one at home as well. The more screen real estate that I can get to work with, the better. Plus, I can probably convince my wife that it would be worth it.

The only thing I'd have to do is clean a bunch of crap off my desk to make room for it.

I am planning on getting my brand new PS3 after work today so I can have it for the weekend. I'll probably get Uncharted with it, and maybe another game or two, depending on what they have in stock.
But really guys, I don't know how we are to discuss this if every second comment is a wild exaggeration.

"It has three hour cutscenes" - No. The longest one in MGS4 is like 40 minutes, but it also happens after the game play has stopped. Admittedly, it's boring and shit. The cutscenes in MGS3 were shorter... plus they were mostly fucking awesome.

"The game isn't fun" - Each to their own... but basically no. It's got a virtual tool box of weapons, gadgets and items to experiment with in a relatively unique videogame environment ( progress while avoiding (or not) two other parties in combat). And then it's got a couple of curveball levels, strange mini games (Mech fights!) and boss fights* which are generally enjoyable too.

I'm well aware of the flaws in this game. Since this was a 'game recommendation thread' I think it's fair to say:

What wild exaggerations? The control scheme is broken, the cutscenes are agonizingly long, and overall this shit makes no sense whatsoever. I fail to see how those complaints are wild exaggerations. This game is fucking awful.
The longest cutscene was 1 hour 33 minutes 38 seconds.

I was exaggerating with 3 hours, but in this particular instance it's not by much.

Cutscene's a toilet break and a cup of tea, max. It's not supposed to be enough time to develop your own game in.

I thought the controls were quite good, and various ways you could approach a level. There were very few parts that I got stuck on, and the cutscenes, well, like I said, if you played the others you would expect long cutscenes. If you don't like the story, yes, I could see people getting very annoyed with it. I didn't mind them, but I will agree that when you only have, say an hour to play, a lot of that time can be eaten up by cutscenes and can be a definite draw back.

Spoilers:

Personally, I wish the game had ended with Snake blowing his brains out. When they brought back another cutscene after the credits started to roll where they show that he "missed" and wanted to carry on, I was a little disappointed.
yeah how does any of that make any of that game less fucking awful please give me an answer
