Possibly getting a PS3 soon... - Page 2

Proportionally it's like saying The Phantom Menace was awesome because Darth Maul and the lightsaber fight at the end rocked.

What you don't like watching children who have been raised in a military plane their entire lives without ever setting foot outside, cooking eggs... repeatedly?

I was exaggerating with 3 hours, but in this particular instance it's not by much.

Cutscene's a toilet break and a cup of tea, max. It's not supposed to be enough time to develop your own game in.
I'm willing to sit through cutscenes (or even quasi interactive cutscenes) as long as it works. And yeah it doesn't work here.

So yeah the cutscenes are long and agonising (a couple of them are quite cool though). And there's a few other shitty bits. (Why has no-one mentioned the game breaking design decision to buy ammo at any point in the game, including boss fights? Or the retarded Beauty sections following the Beast boss fights?)

But those aside, it's a well received game that a lot of people liked for good reasons. Going on about the cutscenes and the story telling are missing the reasons why people did like the game.

I think my argument is like saying The Phantom Menace was worth watching because Darth Maul and the lightsaber fight at the end rocked (and a few other bits were good too).

MGS is brain-numbing. It's most likely nostalgia, but I enjoyed MGS 1 quite a bit. And objectively speaking, the first half hour (or whatever, that was the demo) of MGS2 is really fuckin good. Sneaking around that cargo ship is stealth tactical action; everything since that has been a mish mash of ideas and concepts thrown up against a wall.

Enslaved looks really interesting. I'm not sure when its coming out, and it quite obviously rips off ICO (which I'm fine with, steal from the best), but keep an eye out for it.

Of course, I don't own a PS3. I'm waiting for an announcement on what platform Virtua Fighter 5 R is going to be on. Still waiting.

Soooo.....MGS4 is a mixed bag that some people will like and others won't, but everyone agrees that it has really long cutscenes. Sounds like a Metal Gear game to me.

You can have my copy if you want.
I'd give Metal Gear a rent, at least. Just to see. Kriegaffe is in pretty much the same boat as myself on the matter.

You know how some games try to build rich worlds that, depending on how much you want to explore, allow you to discover all sorts of things that enrich the experience? MGS4 is the complete opposite.

Remarkably, it’s probably a better experience if all you do is skip the cutscenes and hit up GameFaqs whenever you get stuck.

christ why am i even having to argue anything regarding mgs4

*sigh* because so many people disagree with you?

GamePro - "The Playstation 3 finally gets its "savior", Kojima gets his masterpiece, and gamers get one of the best games of all time."

IGN - "Is it possible to give a game an 11? If so, this would be the game that would merit that score. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is a title that exceeds all of the hype that was attached to the title."

Gamespot - "For anyone who appreciates games that rise above the simple act of pushing a few buttons and pulling a few triggers, Metal Gear Solid 4 is a stimulating ride that you won't soon forget."

G4 TV - "While debate will no doubt rage over the story and its outcomes, there really isn't a single wrong move in the gameplay sections."

1UP - "The MGS4 conundrum is this: The further you play into the game, the less you actually play. Surrendering so much control to make way for movie sequences is galling, especially when the dialogue makes such a big deal about freedom and free will...Despite this gradual decay, though, MGS4 is absolutely a great game. The second half may lack sorely in comparison to the innovative, immersive brilliance of the first, but only because those early portions reach such inspiring heights."

EDGE - "MGS4 is not the game it could have been; nor is it the game it would have been had the series grown with the benefit of hindsight; nor is it the game it should have been if you believed that early trailer. But it is faithful to its fans, its premise and its heart, delivering an experience that is, in so many ways, without equal."

Planning to pick up a PS3 at the beginning of November. Thanks to everyone who threw down some recommendations.

Gamespot is bang on. MGS4 rises above the simple act of pushing buttons.

It's a tour-de-force of wiggling little sticks around.

The way you can take control of Snake during cutscenes and look at various cleavage is DIVINE.
Am I allowed to give this an 11/10??
Yeah well, this conversation is gonna get any better from here. So whatever, each to their own, etc.
At the end of the day Kriegaffe, there's almost nothing in MGS4 for someone who isn't a fan of the series - whatever little gameplay nuggets there are that redeem it. If they're a fan, they'd buy it no matter what we say. If they're not a fan, they're better going out and playing Uncharted instead.

And using reviews (specifically THOSE reviews) as evidence that so many people disagree is the worst, because those reviews are awful. Half of them practically come right out and admit that people are probably going to hate it. And what the fuck is that EDGE pullquote supposed to mean? "This isn't anything like you were anticipating, and there's nothing else like it." Of course not. The subset of games where you can play as an old guy, ogle tits, and crap your pants is sorely lacking. If I wanted to do all that shit I'd just soul-swap with my uncle for a day.

Not really a comparison imho... WII is a totally different system, it's not an 'either...or' deal. As for the 360, sure it has some great exclusives (Fable2, GOW2, also very interested in Alan Wake) but then again, as a platformer lover I get more kicks out of stuff like R&C or Uncharted, and a lot of great games are cross-platform anyway. It may be owner-inspired delusion, but I have the feeling the PS3 is finding its feet.

How the hell does one get $350 of credit at Toys R Us?!

I bought the PS3 Slim yesterday along with Uncharted, R&C: Tools of Destruction, and Motorstorm 1(found it for dirt cheap). I got my PSN ID set up, and I've downloaded a bunch of demos. So far, I haven't done much more than fiddle with a bunch of settings and play a couple races in Motorstorm, but I'll be messing around a ton with it this weekend.

If anybody wants to add me to their friends list, my PSN ID is the same as my 360 one: "PolygonWizard"

The only downside is that I can only have the option to hook it up with composite cables at the moment until I get a new monitor. Needless to say, it doesn't look it's best, and I start getting a headache if I try to read any text for too long. Hopefully I'll only be in this situation for a short period of time.

One has good timing and utilizes their new video game trade-in program before all the values start to suck. I think I traded in a total of 38 games. It was a mix of games from the 360, DS, Wii, and GameCube that I finally decided that I will never play again, so why not use them towards getting new stuff.

Toys R Us has a game trading system?

They just started it in early September. You can either bring games to a store or use their online site to mail them off.

Now that's more like it!

I bit the bullet today and bought a brand new 32" HDTV. Unfortunately I had no magic store credit this time, so my expensive purchase was paid for with real cash.

However, the display is totally freaking worth it. It's only 720p (which is fine for the small room I have it in), but the color and clarity on it are great. I popped in the sample Blu-Ray that came with my PS3, and I immediately wanted to go out and buy Up on Blu-Ray because its trailer looked amazing. I can only imagine what it looks like on a larger 1080p display. Too bad it's not out yet.

Also, the LittleBigPlanet demo was damned fun and also quite long for a demo. It gives you about four levels or so to play around in. I'll have to try the full game at some point. My wife is a big rubber duck fan (don't ask), so she got a kick out of the Super Rub a Dub demo I showed her. I've got a bunch more demos to try out, but first I think I'll play some Uncharted.

Good plan on Uncharted, but don't forget to download the firmware update first!

I downloaded a firmware update soon after setting the internet connection up, so I am assuming that I am up to date now.
