Johnny Mnemonic

Love this film. It's got Keanu Reeves doing Tai Chi in a bathroom. Dolphins on crack.

Also Dolph Lundgren saying...

"IT'S JESUS TIME!"

It'll be interesting seeing Dolph back on the big screen in 2010 with THE EXPENDABLES.

"Halt, sinners!"

I like to think that the rampant brutality of Takeshi Kitano’s only American film, Brothers, is a direct result of being in this film.

I like to think the sheer resentment he felt at his ‘breakout’ American role being this fucking ridiculously terrible seethed over into the outlandish cruelty he confronts his American characters with in Brothers.

I kind of don’t like this movie, a lot.

COME TO JESUS!

Oh yeah...

And I also think Keanu's monologue about the hotel in Tokyo is priceless.

And Henry Rollins playing a martyr.

What a weird fucking movie.

Bad, yes. But weird as fuck and worth seeing at least once for that reason.

The only good non-Lundgren part is when Udo Kier's top half slides off his bottom half.
That's because the only good Udo Kier is a dead Udo Kier.

This is a movie that in between viewings, I convince myself it's not that bad. Then I watch it, and I convince myself that I'm an idiot.

This was my most anticipated movie of the summer of '95. Finally, Hollywood was getting a step closer to bringing Neuromancer to the screen. William Gibson was adapting and expanding his (rather slight) short story. Keanu was coming off his breakout role in Speed. There's no way this could suck. No way!

When a cyborg dolphin isn't the silliest part of a movie, then you know it has problems.

I always heard that the international versions were edited differently- ala in Japan Kitano's role was expanded, likewise in Europe Lundgren's role was expanded. Does anybody know if this was the case?

I still don't think this is that bad. It doesn't seem like a movie made in '95 though. It feels cheap and undermade as if it were 90's tv pilot or a mid-budget early 80's scifi movie.

Here's a clip of stuff that was in the Japanese version. More scenes with Kitano, but there's only about a minute of extra Lundgren stuff (4:14 mark) where he conducts service at his church:

The fault of the director and his filmmaking team. Clearly they threw piles of money at this production. That it looks so cheesy means that they didn't know what to do with it.

But I imagine Lundgren got a nice paycheck out of it. And, since he's the best thing in the movie, deservedly so.

A few months back, I tried rewatching this for the first time since being a 12 year old. Almost everything was much much worse than I remembered. I think I had been looking back at the film with New-Rose-Hotel colored glasses, as in the time that passed since I first saw the movie, Neuromancer had become my favorite book and Gibson my favorite author.

Unfortunately not even Keanu holds up. And I'm something of a perpetual apologist for the man. Oh well, wasted potential, not just because the film sucked but because I am sure it did lasting harm to studios enthusiasm for the financing of cyber punk projects.

PS The thumb mounted laser lasso? Still cool...

How bad was the taint of Johnny Mneumonic? I remember the first time I saw a teaser for The Matrix and I snorted, "What, ANOTHER one?"
lol
Whatever. Watching Henry Rollins hit Dolph Lundgren with his Van only to be saved by Ice-T(looking like he just got out of his costume from Tank Girl) and a cyber dolphin??
Just bad enough to be funny....ok not Just...

I remember thinking it cool that both Lundgren and Kitano were billed above the title. Then I saw the movie...and wished both actors had gone uncredited.
Kitano was billed above the title? I don't remember that.

I remember that in the poster it was KEANU REEVES - DOLPH LUNDGREN

And, it should be noted that Dolph only gets about 8 minutes of screen time.

But what a great 8 minutes they are...

In fact, as a public service, I went ahead and hunted down a couple of things on YouTube.

IT'S JESUS TIME.

And

I WANT ROOOOOOOM SEEEERRRRRRVVVIIIIICE!!!!!!!!!!!!

And these things here? Well, I guess they're really the best Johnny Mnemonic has to offer.

Go with God.

And... COME TO JESUS!

In the credits at the bottom of the poster. Billed simply as "Takeshi," as he was for MERRY CHRISTMAS, MR. LAWRENCE. Early advertisements in Variety used his full name.

Agreed!

I really wanted to like this movie too.

This movie should have been a cult masterpiece, too bad so much went against it.

Found the differences between the International and Extended versions.

The "Doctor Allcome" Cyber Hacking scene still looks impressive after all these years.

I'll throw my two cents in by agreeing that Dolph Lundgren was the best part of Johnny Mnemonic.
Lots of reviews, while bashing the movie, agreed DL was the best of the cast (which was a great ensemble of names though).

Actually just re-watched it as part of my Dolph-marathon (all flicks in chronological order!) this week -- THE JAPANESE VERSION!

And god this cut is so much better than the official international release! Not only because of the additional material but because of the darker score by Mychael Danna, the better use of songs and a slightly different editing which makes it a whole lot different and 2 notches above.

I understood this isn't even the director's cut exactly but closer to Robert Longo's vision. But Sony had to butcher it and be responsible for the bomb that it is...

This movie is abysmal. I tried to rewatch it recently on demand and it was even worse than I remembered. I'm a Keanu apologist and even that wasn't enough to keep me interested. Utter crap.
