The Republican WTF thread

It seems every week there's some new obsession that sweeps the GOP. Right now it seems to be the strangely unpatriotic resistance to Chicago (and by extension America) getting the Olympic Games. Not long ago it was this strange fixation on Obama's Czars. Before that it was the baseless allegations of Obama not being born in Hawaii. Going back to the election, it was that Obama was an out of touch elitist because he liked Arugula. And then there was the '04 election where for some reason the right wing decided to declare war on France for no fucking reason.

I guess what I'm saying is that for some reason, Republicans love to obsess about some truly stupid shit. It goes back at least as far as the 1992 election cycle when Dan Quayle railed against Murphy Brown having a baby out of wedlock. For those who are too young to remember that, Murphy Brown was a fictional character on a sitcom. Ever since then it seems like it's one bizaare obsession after another for the GOP.

My own theory is that for the last two decades, the GOP has been intellectually bankrupt and it might even go further back than that. Maybe the last time the GOP had an intellectual boost was way back when Reagan was running. Since then, it's been all about lower taxes, more spending, and the cure all-vouchers. I guess if you can't talk about policy, then you have to talk about something. So why not talk about shit that makes no sense with as much righteous anger as possible?

Anyway, I thought it would be fun to discuss the past, present, and future false outrages of the GOP. I for one can't wait for what will make John Boehner clutch his pearls over next.

Democrats are too tall!

I can't imagine why this would get traction, but I was pretty surprised at the whole thing with the combat veteran Kerry being branded a coward whereas the coward Bush and his cowardly administration was worshipped by the US military.

No offense but don't we already have a thread about Republicans?

So I guess we really need another one of these threads, huh.

No offense taken. Even though there is a more generalized "Republican Party Moving Forward" thread where these "Tempest in a Tea Pot" scandals come up for discussion, I thought the phenomena of the GOP false outrage machine deserved its own dedicated thread.

I think it's fascinating on several fronts. One being the fact that this is a spectrum wide Republican strategy and not just some random nutjob doing this. Take a look at the Czar issue. It starts on Glen Beck and then it's everywhere the next day. Same thing with the Arugula thing. Same thing with France. The issue comes out of thin air and everyone from Rush Limbaugh to Eric Cantor is talking about it.

I'm also interested in the fact that the media enables this behavior. When Sarah Palin did her Facebook update about "Death Panels", the media didn't shut that shit down and shame Palin. No they brought Republican strategists on their shows to discuss this like it was the Public Option. Is this because the Liberal Media never was liberal or is it because of the Right Wing has bullied the MSM into reporting what they say seriously lest they be labeled "biased"?

But if you don't think this is a topic ripe for discussion, then it'll move down the queue soon enough. Anyway, that's why I started the thread.

.
To be fair though, theres already at least three threads on this page that consist of people talking about either how dumb, ugly, or retarded Republicans are (actually, I think all of these threads now officially contain all three of the aforementioned adjectives). Plus one or two have gone above and beyond and achieved gold star status by containing crude statements about a Republican Chud member's personal family life.

Doesnt really bother me as I barely read em, but maybe enoughs enough.

I can happily combine all of these if need be.

It's way more obvious than that. The anchors and corporate owners of the MSM news divisions are in the tax bracket that has benefitted from the country switching out the New Deal policy template for the Reagonomics one. Sure, it has been disastrous for the rest of the country over the last 28 years, but they've been sailing high the entire time. They want that to coninue, so they have the same economic agenda as corporate America and the GOP. Hence, the GOP gets mindnumbingly favorable coverage and anyone who is to the right of the Clintons is hit with the "loony" brush. Just look at the coverage of the "TEA" movement and the public option for proof.
