Gurps?

I'm a long time gamer but haven't played in years. I like to stick with fantasy settings and 4e really isn't doing it for me. Any thoughts on GURPS? I like the flexibility of making your own setting but don't know anyone who has played a full campaign.

Thoughts?

I played Gurps pretty heavily 10-12 years ago. We played a really long Shadowrun/Cypberpunk type campaign (3 years or so) and a year long pirate campaign. It's a solid system that's really easily adaptable to any setting that you choose. It's logical and makes sense, but it does rely on the GM and the players to fill in alot of the blanks (which isn't a bad thing).

Any thoughts on the magic system? As I get older I find this is the one part of the rules that increasingly baffles me with RPG's and inevitably I have a player who's in love with magic.

GURPS is one of the few systems I just truly loathe, and it's mostly because of the fans. The system is clunky to begin with, even with the streamlined 4e, and I've never played it with anyone who wasn't just kind of a douchebag. Granted, that may just be a coincidence, but the system does seem to be favored by the more anal among us. Present company excluded, of course.

I honestly don't recall. As I said, I haven't played it in around 12 years, and things have probably changed in the interim.

We certainly weren't anal about it when we played it...we ignored a ton of the written stuff in favor of house rules (especially in the pirate campaign).

GURPS has two different modifiers for "lying down" and "prone". Fuck GURPS.
