With the current Batman films going nowhere anytime soon and Nolan's opposition to tying them into a larger DC Universe, I think it would be great if DC's new studio took a page from Marvel's playbook and made little spinoff brands that dealt with niche market. At least until Punisher: War Zone came out and ate it, Marvel had Marvel Knights set up to handle R-rated fare. DC could get around Nolan and introduce the characters they want to turn into franchises to the public by teaming them up with the A-list heroes in the elseworlds stories and could re;ease them under something like a "DC: Elseworlds" banner.
The two that jump out as the flagship entries into that series would be Kingdom Come and The Dark Knight Returns. Both utilize the two most established DC heroes in the story and Superman's presence is limited and not action heavy in both, which seems to cut down on the cost problems.
For Kingdom Come, I'd like to see this cast for the major players:
Magog: Vin Diesel
Superman: Jon Hamm
Wonder Woman: Monica Bellucci
Captain Marvel: Liev Schreiber
Batman: Alec Baldwin
Lex Luthor: Tom Wilkinson
Norman McCay: Kier Dullea
Red Robin: Val Kilmer
Martian Manhunter: Nick Cage
Spectre: Ray Liotta
