30's, 40's, 50's, and at some point the 10's....
40's should be great.

Let's not wait another year!
I'm up for any decade, anytime.
I'd really like a do-over on my 2000s draft. I'm good with the first three picks, but I'd probably push 300 into the bonus picks and do something different with #4 and 5.
I think the 2000s should be done again. A. because I was not in it before and B. Obviously there are some more added to the list since then.
Too soon!
I didn't mean now.. I just would like to see that and the 70s done again some day to be apart of them. Though obviously the 2000s make more sense because it was not over when it was done.
Yeah, we should definitely finish of all the other decades before we round back on ones we've already done.
In that case I say 50's
30's, 40's and 50's would probably be tough for me, unless you combined them all in one draft. I'd probably have nothing but genre picks for those decades, so prepare yourself for me drafting The Mummy's Ghost and shit like that.

No, no combining decades. One of the key benefits of these drafts is to introduce people to titles they never would have considered otherwise.
agreed every draft reminds me why i love movies and shows me there are still so many greats out there to see.
I'm okay with combining the 20s and 30s simply because there really isn't enough of the 20s left. No reason for the 40s and 50s not to stand alone though.

The '30s are MASSIVE. We could do drafts on individual years. I would have no problem treating the silent era as a single event though.
I was thinking in terms of eras that (once we got to the 30's) roughly met the decade requirements. Like: Great Train Robbery to right before Jazz Singer. Jazz Singer to right before Kane. Kane to right before Streetcar. Streetcar to right before The Apartment. Something like that.
How many of us have really seen a lot of movies from the era of The Great Train Robbery to Jazz Singer? I've seen a couple dozen from that era, Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd, the German Expressionist films, Potemkin, Fairbanks, and Metropolis, among others. That's what, 2 rounds maybe?

One way to find out. Early films are more accessible now than they ever have been. And 'lost' films would be eligible by existing Draft rules.
It'd have a significantly smaller number of players, that's for sure.

I was just suggesting significant breaking points that covered a greater span of time the farther back we got. I have no idea how successful a silent era draft would be.
We should draft Edison's Kinetoscope films.

What if we drafted genres? Or other, more specific themes?
I'm up for whatever, but would love to see the 50's go through the gauntlet next.

I didn't participate in the last 00's draft so while I'd like to take a crack at those a little more time should pass to let the decade breathe a bit.
I'm with you guys up to the 50s. That's as far as I'd feel confident in drafting anything.

I agree that Silent Era should be its own draft and basically take care of the first two decades of the 20th Century. Then, the remainder of the 20s could be folded into a 30s draft.

The 40s deserves its own draft, absolutely.

I wouldn't participate in the drafting but I'd love to see what you guys come up with.

It sucks for me that I wasn't around for the 70s and 80s drafts. But I agree that it doesn't make sense to redo those any time soon.

And, as for the Aughts? Yeah... Definitely. But let's wait a couple of years. Perspective is needed.
I could comfortably go back to the 30s. Beyond that, I just haven't seen enough.

I fear we'd spend the whole time arguing whether a given film qualified for said theme or genre.
The 50's will indeed rock. Like Tati, I hope we don't wait another whole year.

The drafts are the most fun I've had since joining this crazy little thing called CHUD. It's more than a competition, it's when the message board feels like a community.

<Big thanks once again for running the show, Kirby>
post #80 of 104
I was going to suggest Modern Times as a better landmark between silent and talkies, the last silent, rather than The Jazz Singer as there were significant silent films left. Sunrise for instance. But Modern Times is all the way in 1936. That's too far.

I might suggest 42nd Street or Gold Diggers of 1933, where Busby Berkeley basically creates the film musical, as alternatives though.
I might be able to swing a 50's draft. I'll just have to bulk up on Turner Classic Movies in the interim.

You know what would be epic? A hour-long television drama draft.

That would be epic.

I'd definitely be down for a 50s draft.

Chaplin is a special case, and anyway starting with The Circus (1928) his films did have soundtracks even if there was no dialogue. 1933 is too late-- Jazz Singer remains the best switchpoint, unless we just call the break at 1930.

Love to do it just to see where Lost would go.
I don't think we've ever done any kind of television draft. I remember we did something where we picked properties and creators and did our networks, but that wasn't strictly a draft per se. But I'd definitely be down for an hour-long drama draft. And a sitcom draft too.
A fucking sitcom draft would need to be, like, 3 rounds or so, lest you want to see a few male nanny shows taken.

Really? Everything from The Honeymooners through Community? Only 3 rounds?
A sitcom draft? c'mon

Plenty of decades left and movie genres in general. Or Directors, Writers, whatever.

Dramas... different story.
If I were to do a sitcom draft, I'd open it up to US and British shows.

Yes, but draw the line at sketch comedy shows. Sitcoms only would be my preference.
How many people were in this draft? 40? You think there are 120+ sitcoms worth a damn?
Much like the network draft y'all did a while ago would anyone be interested in a film project draft? Draft a producer, director, writer, actors, etc. to create a fantasy project?

I'd love to do that just as I would have enjoyed that band draft that sputtered to a halt before starting.

Do I personally think there are 120 great sitcoms? No.

Do I think there are 120 sitcoms stretched over 50 years of television history that might be worthy of discussion between 30-40 people? Absolutely.

Might I suggest City Lights (debut March 7, 1931) as a compromise. If you use The Jazz Singer (Feb. 4, 1928) as a divisor you lose The Wind, The Cameraman, The Crowd, Steamboat Bill Jr., The Passion of Joan of Arc, City Lights, The Man Who Laughs, Abel Gance's Napoleon, and The White Hell of Pitz Palu, among others. That's a sizable chunk of really notable silent films.

1930 films that might make a good break: Hells Angels (Nov. 15, 1930, delayed to be reshot in sound), and All Quiet on the Western Front (Aug. 24, 1930) would help keep the silents all in one chunk as well. Heck, All Quiet is probably the first sound film that would be drafted anyways.
Not that it really matters to me either way, but if you want to include all the silent films together, why not just have an all silent films draft?
That could include a handful of films from much later. Better to just break it on a date.
I still want a 1950s draft.
I do feel that should be next.
It'd be nice to see the dropout.
