I still DO like Star Wars - Page 81

Just rewatched TFA tonight with my 7 yr old son. First time in a long while. You know what? Still pretty good! Not that there aren't at least 2-3 groan-inducing instances. But by and large, pretty good! Fun, even!

i.e., you guys are jerks.

Anyone hear about the two day hotel experience Disney is thinking of creating?

I hate Disneyland, but sign me the fuck up for this.

I was like, "Why is he playing his hand?"

But then the rest of the move happens.

Dooku is the embodiment of the wasted potential of the prequels.  This scene sets him up as an interesting and complex character... but nope, he has to be a Sith lord.  Dumb.

Dooku should have been an idealistic - but misguided - figure manipulated from the shadows by Palpatine, not actively evil himself.

Should've been Qui Gon.

I was flipping through the first volume of Gillen's VADER comic today. I just can't do it, man. It opens with Jabba and closes with Boba Fett. Ugh.

It's such limited imagination. Storytelling as endless mash-up.

And Lucas is to blame a bit for playing into that, too.

Pardon the tangent, but I'll never get over how much this Jabba looks like complete shit.  I think he looks even worse here than the first attempt at the scene from 1997...

Neither version looks good, but at least the '97 iteration looks like he's occupying the same space as Ford.

Why was it so difficult to get Jabba right, both in this scene and his cameo in THE PHANTOM MENACE?  It's like they didn't even try to match the puppet design.

I still remember skipping school the day the first Special Edition opened and being kind of amazed by the Jabba the Hutt scene. But I was also a dumb teenager. Not a sophisticated adult like I am now.

*fart sound*

The '97 Jabba actually looks vomit inducing.  Horrible.  The redux at least more closely approximates Jabba's shape and skin.  The '97 looks like talking diarreha.

He wasn't hard on Rogue One enough, but here you go.

Does he cover JJ's shitty characterization?  Cause that's what mine is about.

doesn't talk about JJ at all really

it's a very gentle video

you can be DIFFERENT by being snarky and cruel!!!

oh wait...

seriously, he pretty much covers what we've gone over in this thread over and over

at least what I've gone over in this thread, the general star war thread, the forwakens thread, and the rogue one thread!

NO ONE WILL ESCAPE

Hmmmm I haven't watched it yet.  Maybe it's different enough from what I'm thinking. All these guys tend to be milquetoast softies.

Folding Ideas...

Ugh.

Watched it. I'll give the gentlemen this. He made some great points about Rogue One that would have greatly improved the movie. Going to Jyn's father is literally 32 useless minutes, as is the weird alien interrogation.

And she is a pretty passive protagonist. Still a good movie though!

He's completely totally wrong about TFA. Sounded like Barry.
Good movie equals 30 useless minutes following a non character.

This is either movie hell or purgatory and I can't tell which.

Please. Complain again about the 5 minute Rathtar scene.
Your simplification of Rogue One into only those specific negative traits is pathetic, and desperate.

And you're a poopy.
I may be a poopy... but I'm only a little poopy.
For the record, I'm not one of these anti rathar people. I've lamented Rey's fuckup in that scene not actually being a fuck up at all and an over reliance on practical effects, but I've never said "cut the sequence!" Or anything. "Han Solo, monster smuggler" is hilarious to me. Just the concept of Han smuggling horrible lovecraft creatures makes me smile.

I really don't get the now accepted wisdom that TFA has better original characters than RO, particularly when it comes to Jyn and Rey. I can understand the argument that Rey, Finn, and Poe are more likeable than Jyn, Cassian, and Galen, but the characters' motivations are generally clearer in RO, especially in the case of Jyn and Rey.

Jyn doesn't like the Empire because they killed her mum and kidnapped her dad, and what she's seen of the rebellion has left her cynical and resigned. She starts of bitter and surly. She learns the truth of what her dad's been up to (giving her a personal motivation to fulfill the work her dad started), witnesses the Empire's evil very clearly (giving her a moral motivation - she has the means to help stop this, so she feels that she must) and thereafter is very proactive in getting the plans and thwarting the villains.

Rey seems aware of the Resistance and the First Order. She helps BB8 out of the goodness of her heart, showing that she's moral and compassionate, but , but her knowledge of the big war - and the audience's sense of how said conflict is impacting the larger galaxy - is totally vague. Her goal is to get BB8 back to the Resistance until she's captured by Kylo Ren, at which point her personal goal is simply to survive the situation - she has no personal stake in the First Order conflict. At the end, she goes off to become a Jedi because Star Wars protagonists become Jedi.

Anakin (wants to leave slavery, have the power to do good, free his mum), Luke (wants to leave the farm, is aware of and hates the Empire, wants to follow his father's footsteps, wants to bang Leia, wants to avenge his dead foster parents), and Jyn (wants to redeem her father, wants to help destroy the weapon she's seen in action) all have horses in the race in the big conflict, whereas Rey is good-hearted and wants to belong. I think they did her character a disservice by making her storyline stick so closely to Luke's - if Rey and Finn had been stormtrooper buds, or Rey had been one of the villagers at the start, she'd have a real passionate motivation from the get-go.

Stuff working on paper isn't the same as it working in a film.  Execution is everything.  RO just wasn't handled as well.

I was pretty bored with RO and it's bland characters.

So TFA wins.
JJ wins again with his pedal to the metal charm and delightfulness, making Stocks willingly ignore the flaws. That VILLAIN.
It helps that JJ presented more likable characters than in most of his other films. I rather follow Rey, Finn, and Poe than Abrams' take on Kirk and Spock.

The actors you mean.  On Instragram.  I AGREE VERY CHARISMATIC AND LIKABLE.

The characters can Get to Fuck.

I do mean the TFA characters.

More so than the band of dullard mopes in R1.
